That doesn\u2019t make you innocent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raymond looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou agree?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re siding with her now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That question revealed more than he intended.<\/p>\n<p>There had always been sides to him.<\/p>\n<p>Not family.<\/p>\n<p>Positions.<\/p>\n<p>Winners.<\/p>\n<p>Losers.<\/p>\n<p>Loyalty measured by agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not siding with Dara,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m telling you that both of you hurt me in different ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked offended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter everything I did to find the truth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t want truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gestured toward his laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted Grandpa to be wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice cut through the room.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>My father stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>For once, he did not sound tired.<\/p>\n<p>He sounded angry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad made his choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raymond stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took care of our grandmother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could have done both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe should have found a way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve spent twenty years punishing a dead man for refusing to become the person you wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raymond opened his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Dad did not let him speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now you nearly destroyed my daughters over it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence ended the argument.<\/p>\n<p>Not because Raymond agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Because the room finally stopped organizing itself around his grievance.<\/p>\n<p>He packed the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>At the door, he turned toward Dara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeday you\u2019ll understand I was trying to preserve something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him steadily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand exactly what you were trying to preserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raymond waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour anger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He left.<\/p>\n<p>The front door closed.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Mom began crying quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat down.<\/p>\n<p>Dara stared at the empty doorway.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still responsible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia, who had been silent near the hallway, spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She crossed her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause this family has a bad habit of finding the oldest available person to blame and pretending everybody younger becomes innocent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody argued.<\/p>\n<p>She was right.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond had manipulated.<\/p>\n<p>Martin had defrauded.<\/p>\n<p>Dara had acted.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had shared information carelessly.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had hidden history to avoid conflict.<\/p>\n<p>I had withdrawn so completely that people mistook distance for rejection.<\/p>\n<p>None of those truths canceled the others.<\/p>\n<p>Later, after everyone left, Dad called me into the garage.<\/p>\n<p>He opened a metal cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was Grandpa\u2019s wooden deed box.<\/p>\n<p>The Bible.<\/p>\n<p>The photographs.<\/p>\n<p>The carved horse.<\/p>\n<p>He lifted one envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found this behind the Bible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart sank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He handed it to me.<\/p>\n<p>The envelope was dated twelve years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>After Grandpa\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting belonged to Raymond.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was addressed to Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel, if you will not help me recover what Father abandoned, I will find someone in the next generation who understands what family duty means.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom, one final line had been underlined.<\/p>\n<p>Dara will understand.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=3004\">Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Raymond Had Chosen Dara Years Before the Cabin Dispute, and Her Reaction Finally Broke the Pattern He Expected Her to Repeat<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We did not call Raymond.
