Concealing taxable income or marital assets may be another issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe payments total roughly $386,000 over five years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt numb.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly four hundred thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had spent years telling me we needed to watch expenses.<\/p>\n<p>He complained when I replaced our failing dishwasher.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that we couldn&#39;t afford a kitchen renovation.<\/p>\n<p>He told me to delay buying new equipment for my physical therapy practice because cash flow was tight.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile he had an undisclosed company earning almost eighty thousand a year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much is left?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin clicked another tab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did it go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthstar. His mother. His sister. Credit-card payments. Cash withdrawals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the screen.<\/p>\n<p>The account belonged to the Bennett Family Education Trust.<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard of that either.<\/p>\n<p>Beneficiaries:<\/p>\n<p>Natalie Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>For one brief second, relief washed through me.<\/p>\n<p>At least this looked like something for our children.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rebecca frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is trustee?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin enlarged the document.<\/p>\n<p>Diane Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin&#39;s expression was cautious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn irrevocable trust created four years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFunded by Mark?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrimarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApproximately $170,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I should have been pleased.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden money for our children was still hidden, but at least the intent sounded protective.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rebecca read the distribution clause.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis trust doesn&#39;t simply pay Natalie and Eric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what does it do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned the page toward me.<\/p>\n<p>If either child disclaimed his or her interest, died without descendants, or failed to meet specific conditions, remaining assets could revert through a secondary family trust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>His mother.<\/p>\n<p>Not me.<\/p>\n<p>Not our children\u2019s future children.<\/p>\n<p>Diane.<\/p>\n<p>And there was another provision.<\/p>\n<p>The trustee could make loans to family members associated with beneficiary welfare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The education trust wasn&#39;t simply a gift to our children.<\/p>\n<p>It was another mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>Another pool of money kept outside my sight.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Mark&#39;s notebook.<\/p>\n<p>N + E COOPERATE.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the pages weren&#39;t only about Dad&#39;s inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Mark had spent years building financial systems around the same belief.<\/p>\n<p>Family money belonged wherever he decided it should go.<\/p>\n<p>And I was beginning to understand that my inheritance had not created his obsession.<\/p>\n<p>It had simply been the largest prize ever placed within reach.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=2359\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: When Mark\u2019s Mother Finally Told the Truth, I Learned His Secret Accounts Had Begun Long Before My Father\u2019s Final Warning<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The condominium was in Indianapolis.
