3 – The Next Morning, Matteo Sartori’s Mother Locked Her Office Door and Showed Me Why My Daughter’s Visit Could Not Be Ignored

Rosalind didn't call me into her office to discuss housekeeping.

I knew that the moment I saw her face.

She looked as though she hadn't slept properly.

Her expression was controlled.

But there was something beneath it that I couldn't immediately understand.

I was already nervous.

The Sartori estate was still unfamiliar to me.

I was trying to learn my responsibilities.

I wanted to be someone Rosalind could rely on.

And I had no idea why she wanted to speak with me privately.

She told me to come inside.

I obeyed.

Then she closed the door.

I heard the lock turn.

That small sound made my stomach tighten.

I was suddenly very aware of where I stood.

Inside a powerful family's home.

In a private office.

With the woman who could take away the best job I'd ever been offered.

Rosalind moved toward her desk.

There were documents waiting there.

I didn't recognize them at first.

I tried to remain calm.

Perhaps she wanted to discuss my duties.

Perhaps there was something I'd misunderstood.

I was preparing to apologize for whatever mistake I'd made when she spoke.

She said my daughter had entered Matteo's room.

I stared at her.

For a moment, I couldn't make the words fit together.

My daughter?

Poppy?

I asked whether she was certain.

Rosalind looked directly at me.

There was no doubt in her expression.

She said Poppy had gone into the medical wing.

The forbidden medical wing.

The place she'd specifically warned me to avoid.

I felt weak.

My first thought wasn't about Matteo.

It was about the job.

I hated admitting that afterward.

But fear doesn't always make a person noble.

Sometimes it makes you think about the most immediate thing you might lose.

I thought about our rent.

The bills waiting to be paid.

The nights Poppy had slept while I worked.

The opportunity I'd believed could finally change our lives.

And I understood that it might already be slipping away.

I began apologizing.

I told Rosalind that Poppy was only three.

I explained that she didn't understand the rules.

I said I'd never knowingly allowed her into a private room.

My words came too quickly.

I could hear the fear in my voice.

I wanted Rosalind to understand that I hadn't disrespected her instructions.

I hadn't decided the rules didn't apply to us.

I had simply lost sight of my daughter for a short time.

And my daughter had wandered somewhere she shouldn't have gone.

I asked Rosalind not to dismiss me.

I don't remember feeling proud of how desperate I sounded.

But I couldn't afford pride.

I had spent too many months struggling to keep a roof over Poppy's head.

The thought of starting again frightened me more than I wanted to admit.

I told her I would be more careful.

I promised that nothing like it would happen again.

I waited for her response.

She didn't answer my request.

Instead, she placed a medical chart on the desk between us.

I looked at the paper.

There were numbers.

Readings.

Information I couldn't immediately interpret.

My hands felt cold.

I thought she might be showing me evidence that Poppy had interfered with Matteo's care.

Perhaps she'd touched a piece of equipment.

Perhaps she'd caused a problem.

I wondered whether Rosalind was about to tell me that my daughter had endangered her son.

The thought made me feel ill.

Poppy would never intentionally hurt anybody.

But she was a child.

She didn't understand medical equipment.

She didn't know what could happen if she moved something important.

I looked at Rosalind.

I wanted to ask whether Matteo was all right.

Before I could, she turned the chart toward me.

Then she asked whether I understood what I was looking at.

I shook my head.

I wasn't going to pretend.

The numbers meant nothing to me without an explanation.

Rosalind looked down at the record.

For a moment, her expression changed.

The authority was still there.

But now I saw something else.

A mother's exhaustion.

I'd seen that kind of exhaustion in my own reflection.

The look of someone who had spent too many nights worrying about a child.

Rosalind's circumstances were nothing like mine.

She lived in a mansion.

She had money.

She had medical professionals caring for her son.

I had spent months struggling to pay for ordinary necessities.

But none of those differences changed the fact that she was a mother waiting for her child to recover.

Matteo was thirty-eight.

A powerful man.

Someone people feared.

But he was still her son.

I began to understand why the room mattered so much.

It wasn't simply about privacy.

It was about protecting somebody who couldn't protect himself.

Rosalind explained that Matteo had shown very little meaningful responsiveness during the forty-nine nights since his accident.

The medical team had been watching carefully.

They had monitored his condition.

They had waited for signs that he might be regaining awareness.

But nothing had happened that gave them the answer they wanted.

Then Poppy entered.

I looked at the chart again.

Rosalind pointed to the readings.

She explained that something had changed while my daughter was beside Matteo.

I tried to understand.

Poppy had entered the room.

Poppy had touched him.

And the monitor had responded.

I asked whether she meant his condition had improved.

Rosalind didn't give me a simple answer.

She explained what the record showed.

There had been an increase in his heart rate.

Five beats.

Then seven.

Nurse Gwen Alder had observed it while Poppy was singing.

I stared at Rosalind.

My daughter had been singing?

That detail confused me almost as much as the medical readings.

I knew what Poppy did when she wanted to comfort someone.

I knew how she behaved when she saw another person upset.

But I hadn't imagined her singing in a stranger's bedroom.

Especially not Matteo Sartori's.

Rosalind told me that Poppy had been beside his bed.

That she'd held his hand.

And that she'd sung the lullaby I knew so well.

You Are My Sunshine.

I felt tears gathering before I could stop them.

I remembered all the nights I'd sung that song to my daughter.

The nights when she was frightened by storms.

The nights when I came home exhausted.

The nights when I didn't know how we would manage another month.

That song belonged to those small moments.

I'd never imagined hearing it mentioned in the office of a woman as powerful as Rosalind Sartori.

I tried to explain why Poppy might have sung.

She often used the song when she was scared.

I sang it to comfort her.

She must have thought Matteo needed the same thing.

Rosalind listened.

Her expression softened slightly.

She told me Gwen had witnessed the encounter.

That the nurse had noticed the monitor change and preserved the readings.

I looked down at the medical chart.

It was difficult to connect those numbers with my little girl.

Poppy couldn't even understand what a heart monitor did.

She couldn't explain what it meant for a patient to remain unconscious.

She didn't know that forty-nine nights had passed without the response Matteo's family wanted.

Yet her presence had coincided with something the nurse considered important enough to record.

I wanted to believe it meant he was recovering.

I wanted to believe my daughter had helped.

But I was afraid to say that aloud.

I wasn't a doctor.

I didn't know whether a heart-rate increase proved anything about awareness.

And I didn't want to offer Rosalind false hope.

She had already endured enough uncertainty.

I knew what it felt like to hope for something desperately.

To search for reassurance in the smallest detail.

To hear good news in words that weren't necessarily meant as a promise.

I didn't want to do that to another mother.

So I listened.

Rosalind explained that the change had occurred while Poppy was holding Matteo's hand and singing.

The timing was unusual.

It was enough to make Gwen pay attention.

But the chart couldn't tell us exactly what Matteo had experienced.

I thought about him lying in that room.

A man whose life had once been filled with power and decisions.

Now he depended on medical staff to care for him.

He couldn't tell anyone what he wanted.

He couldn't explain whether he was afraid.

He couldn't even reassure his mother.

For the first time, I stopped thinking about his reputation.

I thought about him as a person.

And I understood why Poppy had approached him.

She hadn't seen the dangerous man everybody talked about.

She had seen somebody alone.

That was all.

I thought of her gray rabbit.

I pictured her dragging the chair toward his bed.

I imagined her little hand closing around his.

The picture frightened me.

But it also made me ache with tenderness.

I had spent so much of her life worrying that poverty would make her unhappy.

I worried about what she lacked.

A proper babysitter.

A stable routine.

The ordinary comforts I couldn't always provide.

Yet she had grown into a child who wanted to comfort somebody else.

I hadn't failed at everything.

That thought came unexpectedly.

I was standing in a locked office, afraid of being fired.

And still, for one brief moment, I felt proud of my daughter.

Then I remembered where I was.

Rosalind hadn't told me I could keep the job.

She hadn't said Poppy was forgiven.

She was showing me medical evidence connected to a serious violation of her instructions.

I couldn't assume that the unusual monitor readings changed the rules.

I asked whether Matteo had been harmed.

Rosalind didn't tell me he'd been injured by Poppy's visit.

Instead, she continued discussing the readings.

That was when I began to realize this meeting wasn't only about discipline.

She wanted me to understand why the encounter mattered.

There was something personal in the way she held the chart.

She wasn't simply an employer reviewing an incident.

She was a mother trying to make sense of a change in her son's condition.

I recognized that look.

I had worn it when Poppy was ill.

When I needed to know whether she was getting better.

When I wanted certainty and couldn't have it.

Rosalind's money hadn't protected her from that feeling.

Neither had her family name.

Neither had the frightening reputation surrounding Matteo.

For forty-nine nights, she had been waiting.

And now a three-year-old housekeeper's daughter had entered the room and sung a lullaby.

I could understand why Rosalind wanted answers.

I just didn't know what answers I could give her.

I hadn't taught Poppy any special way to help unconscious patients.

I hadn't told her to approach Matteo.

I hadn't even known she was upstairs.

All I had taught her was that singing could make a frightened person feel less alone.

And apparently, that was what she'd done.

Rosalind looked at me for a long moment.

Then she reached for another sheet.

I noticed that her hand wasn't as steady as before.

She moved the first chart aside.

The second page contained another set of readings.

I leaned forward.

I still didn't understand the numbers.

But I understood that Rosalind considered them important.

She told me there had been another event.

Not while Poppy was singing.

Not while my daughter's hand rested against Matteo's.

This had happened several minutes after Poppy left.

I looked up.

The room felt suddenly smaller.

Whatever she was about to explain, it had frightened her enough to bring me into her private office.

I waited.

Rosalind pointed to the second reading.

And I realized that the heart-rate change hadn't been the only thing the medical staff had noticed.

<a
