2 – When I Finally Faced Benjamin and Genevieve, Their Silence Told Me More Than the Explanation They Had Come Prepared to Give

The first thing I noticed was that Benjamin couldn't hold my gaze.

He looked at me.

Then at the porch.

I knew that movement.

It was small.

It was also familiar.

For months, I had paid more attention to what people said than what they did while saying it.

I was trying to change that.

Genevieve stood behind him.

She shifted her weight from one foot to the other.

She didn't greet me.

The older woman raised her head.

Now that I could see her properly, I realized how tired she looked.

There were lines around her eyes.

Her raincoat was damp across the shoulders.

And she still hadn't loosened her grip on the folder.

I looked from one face to another.

I waited for someone to explain the visit.

Nobody did.

It was a strange thing, standing in your own doorway while three people looked at you as though you were the one who had arrived unexpectedly.

Benjamin cleared his throat.

He asked whether they might come in.

I didn't answer immediately.

I looked at Genevieve.

Then at the woman in the green coat.

I had no intention of opening my house to another conversation that left me with more questions than I'd had before.

So I told Benjamin that I needed to understand their reason for coming.

He looked as though he might answer.

His mouth opened.

Then closed.

Genevieve glanced toward him.

I noticed it.

The older woman did too.

I could tell by the way her fingers tightened.

That little glance bothered me more than Benjamin's silence.

It suggested there was an answer.

Perhaps several answers.

And they were still deciding which one I should be allowed to hear.

I had been through enough conversations like that.

Someone would begin explaining.

Someone else would interrupt.

Then a detail would be softened or removed.

By the time the conversation ended, I would have been given a version nobody seemed willing to stand behind.

I looked directly at the older woman.

She told me there was something she believed I needed to know.

Her voice was low.

She didn't speak like someone certain of her welcome.

She spoke as though she understood she might be causing pain.

I felt myself paying closer attention.

There was no performance in her manner.

No reassuring smile.

No confident promise that everything would soon make sense.

She just stood there holding her papers.

For some reason, I trusted that discomfort more than I would have trusted a cheerful greeting.

I moved aside.

Benjamin entered first.

Genevieve followed.

The older woman came last.

I watched her cross the threshold.

She stopped just inside the living room.

Then she looked around.

Her eyes went to the window.

They moved toward the hallway.

Then to the small table beside the sofa.

It wasn't the way a guest looked around an unfamiliar house.

She seemed to be checking details.

I could almost see her comparing the room with a description already in her mind.

I didn't know who had given her that description.

I didn't know what she had expected.

But I knew she was paying attention to things that shouldn't have mattered to someone making an ordinary visit.

The window.

The hallway.

The table.

I noticed her noticing them.

I wished I knew why.

I offered the chairs.

Benjamin sat on the sofa.

The older woman chose a chair.

Genevieve remained standing until she had done so.

Then Genevieve took a seat opposite Benjamin.

I stayed on my feet.

I wasn't trying to make them uncomfortable.

Not deliberately.

I simply didn't want to settle into the room as though we were having a normal conversation.

We weren't.

I had spent too many afternoons sitting politely while someone explained why a question of mine didn't need an answer.

I had accepted too many explanations simply because I was tired of asking.

I wanted this visit to be different.

The older woman placed the folder across her knees.

She didn't open it.

Her thumb moved along the leather edge.

Back and forth.

I watched that small movement.

It reminded me of my own hands a few minutes earlier.

She was nervous.

I was certain of it now.

I wondered whether the people beside her were the reason.

Benjamin was looking down.

Genevieve sat with her hands close together.

Nobody reached for the folder.

Nobody asked her to begin.

We could hear the clock.

That familiar ticking suddenly seemed much louder.

I had known Benjamin for long enough to recognize his uncomfortable silences.

Yet I realized I had often mistaken those silences for feelings I wanted him to have.

Perhaps he was embarrassed.

Perhaps he was tired.

Perhaps he didn't know how to explain himself.

The truth was that I couldn't know what he was thinking.

I had been pretending to know for years.

That was something I was finally ready to admit.

I looked toward the older woman.

If she had come to speak to me, I needed to know who she was.

It wasn't an unreasonable question.

It was the most basic question in the room.

I asked her to introduce herself.

She lifted her eyes.

For an instant, I thought we were finally getting somewhere.

She began.

Then stopped.

Her gaze moved toward Benjamin.

He continued looking at the floor.

Genevieve turned her attention to the window.

The woman said nothing more.

I felt a tightness across my chest.

Not because she had forgotten how to introduce herself.

Because I understood what had happened.

She had looked for permission.

Or reassurance.

Or some indication that Benjamin would accept what she was about to say.

I couldn't know which.

But I had seen enough to understand that she wasn't speaking entirely freely.

My house.

My questions.

And somehow Benjamin was still being consulted before I could learn the stranger's name.

I thought about all the times I had let that happen in other conversations.

Not exactly the same situation.

But the same feeling.

The uncomfortable pause before an answer.

The glance between people.

The way I would end up apologizing for asking something perfectly reasonable.

I nearly laughed.

It was a bitter impulse, and I didn't let it become anything more.

Nothing in that room was funny.

But the pattern was suddenly so obvious that I wondered how I had managed not to see it before.

I turned my attention back to the woman.

I asked her to look at me instead of Benjamin.

She did.

I told her that she was sitting in my home with information she apparently considered important.

I reminded her that Benjamin and Genevieve had accompanied her without offering any clear explanation.

And I told her that I was finished allowing other people to decide when I was ready for answers.

I didn't raise my voice.

I was surprised by that.

My hands had been shaking at the door.

Now they were still enough.

I could feel the difference.

I was still afraid of what she might say.

But I was no longer afraid of making the question difficult for the others.

Those were two separate things.

I hadn't understood that before.

The woman looked down at the folder.

Her thumb stopped moving.

Benjamin remained silent.

Genevieve didn't interrupt.

I had expected someone to object.

Perhaps to tell me I was misunderstanding the visit.

Perhaps to suggest that we begin somewhere else.

Nobody did.

I let the silence remain.

It belonged to them this time.

I wasn't going to fill it with excuses.

I wasn't going to reassure them that I understood.

I didn't understand.

That was precisely why they were there.

The older woman shifted the folder slightly.

I watched her hands.

She seemed to be making a decision.

I wondered how long she had been carrying those papers.

Whether she had read them more than once.

Whether they meant the same thing to her now as they had when she first saw them.

Those questions stayed inside my head.

I didn't want to add more.

Not yet.

I wanted one honest answer before I allowed the conversation to wander.

The woman finally lifted the folder from her knees.

She placed it on the small table.

The leather touched the surface with a quiet sound.

There was nothing dramatic about it.

No papers falling out.

No sudden movement.

But all four of us looked at it.

I realized that nobody had looked directly at me for quite as long as they were now looking at that folder.

I found that difficult to ignore.

I was the person they had come to see.

Yet the thing on my table seemed to frighten them more than my questions.

I stood still.

The woman's hands rested close to the folder.

Benjamin shifted on the sofa.

Genevieve looked at her lap.

And I understood something about the conversation before a single document was opened.

Whatever the woman had brought, it wasn't something Benjamin could easily explain away with a few casual words.

At least, it didn't seem that way.

I didn't know whether that should comfort me.

I didn't know whether I was about to hear something that would make the past easier to understand.

I only knew that the familiar way of avoiding an answer had stopped working.

The woman looked up.

This time, she didn't turn toward Benjamin first.

She began to speak.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Woman With
