1 – I Saw Benjamin and Genevieve Waiting Outside My Home, but the Unknown Woman Between Them Made Me Afraid to Open the Door

I knew Benjamin had come back before I heard anyone at the door.

His car was sitting outside my house.

And he wasn't alone.

I stood beside the living room window with two fingers holding the curtain open.

I hadn't meant to hide.

That was what I told myself.

But I had already been standing there long enough to watch three people get out of the car, and I still hadn't made a move toward the front door.

Benjamin was beside the driver's side.

Genevieve stood near the front.

Neither looked comfortable.

That caught my attention before anything else.

I knew what Benjamin looked like when he had something ordinary to discuss.

This wasn't it.

His back was straight, but his arms hung strangely at his sides.

He kept looking toward the house.

Then looking away.

Genevieve was quieter.

She wasn't trying to get his attention.

She wasn't checking the windows.

She stood there as though the person they had brought with them was the reason they couldn't leave.

I watched the third woman step away from the car.

She was older than I expected.

Her coat was dark green, and there was moisture across its shoulders.

She had a leather folder pressed to her chest.

Both hands were around it.

She didn't tuck it under one arm.

She didn't put it down while she closed the car door.

She held on.

I noticed that.

I noticed everything about that folder.

There was nothing especially remarkable about it.

A thin leather cover.

A few papers, perhaps.

But the way she carried it made me think whatever was inside had become a burden.

She closed her door gently.

Then she stood looking at my house.

Not at Benjamin.

Not at Genevieve.

At the house.

She appeared to be checking something.

I didn't know what.

I had never invited her there.

At least, I didn't remember doing so.

Her face gave me an odd feeling.

I couldn't have said I knew her.

I couldn't have given anyone her name.

But there was something familiar about the way she hesitated.

She looked like someone who had come a long distance in her mind before getting out of that car.

And now she wasn't certain she wanted to finish the journey.

I understood that look.

I had worn it myself.

More times than I cared to admit.

Benjamin turned toward her.

His lips moved.

I couldn't hear what he said.

She gave no obvious answer.

Genevieve watched the woman carefully.

That was the moment I realized they weren't simply visiting together.

They were waiting for her.

Whatever she had to say mattered to both of them.

And, judging by their faces, neither was looking forward to hearing it.

I loosened my grip on the curtain.

It slipped back against the window.

For a moment, I could see my own reflection in the glass.

I looked tired.

I didn't like admitting that.

I had spent a long time telling myself I was handling everything better than I actually was.

I got out of bed.

I kept my house in order.

I paid attention to the things that needed doing.

And when people asked how I was, I gave the answer that made the conversation easier.

I was fine.

That was usually enough.

It stopped people asking more questions.

I had become rather good at stopping questions.

Especially my own.

The house was quiet behind me.

I could hear the refrigerator running.

There was a clock ticking farther inside.

I knew those sounds.

They belonged to a life I understood.

The car outside didn't.

Neither did the woman with the folder.

I walked away from the window.

Then I stopped in the middle of the room.

I had imagined Benjamin returning.

I had gone through possible conversations in my head.

I would ask him why certain things had never been explained.

I would tell him I wanted straight answers.

I would not let him change the subject.

In those imagined conversations, I was calm.

Very calm.

I could remember every question.

I could finish every sentence.

That afternoon, with Benjamin actually standing outside, I couldn't think of where to begin.

My hands had started trembling.

I looked down at them.

I was embarrassed.

There wasn't anyone in the room to see me.

That somehow made the embarrassment worse.

I had promised myself that I wouldn't be frightened by another conversation.

And yet I was standing inside my own home, wondering whether I could bear to hear what those people wanted to say.

I rubbed one hand over the other.

It didn't help much.

There had been too many unanswered questions already.

Some concerned things people had told me.

Others concerned things they had refused to discuss.

And some concerned money.

Money that I couldn't properly account for.

That was the part I had tried hardest not to think about.

It seemed such an ugly thing to suspect someone you trusted of taking advantage.

I preferred explanations that didn't require me to believe that.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

Something I had forgotten.

Those were easier.

They let me keep believing that the people around me were who I thought they were.

Looking back, I was doing their work for them.

Whenever something didn't make sense, I supplied a reason it might.

Whenever someone gave me an incomplete answer, I filled in what was missing.

I made their stories sound reasonable inside my own head.

Then I wondered why I was still confused.

I had confused kindness with refusing to question people.

And I had called that trust.

Trust.

I used to be proud of that word.

Standing in the living room, I wasn't proud anymore.

I was beginning to understand what it had cost me.

There were the practical things.

The money I couldn't explain.

The hours spent trying to remember conversations.

The nights I lay awake turning the same questions over.

But there was something worse.

I had started doubting myself before I doubted anyone else.

If an answer changed, perhaps I had heard the first one incorrectly.

If someone acted uncomfortable, perhaps I had asked at the wrong time.

If I was told not to worry, I tried not to.

And when I couldn't stop worrying, I blamed myself for that too.

I walked toward the hallway.

Then I heard footsteps outside.

Someone was coming along the walkway.

I stood still.

I expected a knock.

Nothing.

The footsteps stopped.

A low voice reached me through the closed window.

Benjamin.

I recognized him, although I couldn't understand what he was saying.

Another voice answered.

I thought it was the older woman.

Then Genevieve spoke.

Only briefly.

The words were lost before they reached me.

I waited.

The silence that followed was uncomfortable even from inside the house.

I wondered whether one of them was trying to persuade the others to leave.

Or whether they were deciding who should speak first.

I didn't know.

I only knew that three people had come to my home and seemed unable to agree on the first thing they wanted to say.

I turned toward the door.

I could have opened it.

I could have asked them what they wanted without allowing them inside.

Instead, I remained where I was.

Part of me wanted to pretend I hadn't seen the car.

That thought shamed me.

It was my front door.

My living room.

My name belonged to this life, however complicated other people had made it.

I shouldn't have needed permission to ask questions in my own house.

I walked into the kitchen.

The counter felt cool when I placed my palm against it.

I looked at the space where I usually kept my keys.

It was such a small, ordinary place.

Nothing about it should have mattered.

But I had always found comfort in keeping things where they belonged.

Keys had their place.

Bills had theirs.

Important documents went into the cabinet.

I liked being able to reach for something and know it would be there.

That habit had seemed sensible to me.

Now I was wondering how I could be so careful with objects and so careless with what people told me.

A misplaced bill bothered me.

An unexplained conversation could trouble me for days.

Yet I would search for a missing paper until I found it and accept a missing explanation because someone I cared about had told me to.

I stayed beside the counter.

The refrigerator continued humming.

I heard the clock.

And I thought about the woman outside.

She had a folder.

Not a bag.

Not an envelope shoved into a pocket.

A folder she was holding with both hands.

I couldn't know what was inside.

I couldn't even know whether it concerned me.

But I had seen Benjamin's face.

I had seen Genevieve watching her.

And I had seen the woman looking at my house as though the place itself raised questions.

I wasn't prepared for what she might say.

I knew that.

I also knew I was tired of being unprepared because nobody had trusted me with the full story.

The knock came while I was still in the kitchen.

Three taps.

Firm enough that I heard every one.

Then silence.

I lifted my hand from the counter.

For a moment, I looked back toward the living room.

The curtain hung where I had left it.

The house was unchanged.

Everything inside was exactly as it had been a few minutes earlier.

But I was no longer alone with my questions.

The people who had helped create them were standing on the other side of my door.

And one of them was a stranger.

I started down the hallway.

My hands were still unsteady.

I stopped trying to hide that from myself.

Whatever Benjamin wanted, he had come.

Whatever Genevieve knew, she had come too.

And whatever the older woman carried, she had chosen to bring it to my house.

I reached the front door.

Before I touched the handle, I looked through the narrow glass panel beside it.

Benjamin was closest.

Genevieve stood behind him.

The older woman had moved slightly to one side.

She was looking down at her folder.

I watched them for a few seconds.

Nobody smiled.

Nobody waved.

Nobody looked like someone arriving for an ordinary visit.

That gave me one small piece of certainty.

I wasn't imagining their discomfort.

It was real.

I put my hand on the door handle.

And opened it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: When I
