4 – ADRIAN MORETTI KISSED ME BEFORE THE ENTIRE STORE AND MY EX LOST THE COURAGE TO REPEAT A SINGLE WORD

I didn't know where to look after Adrian kissed me.

His hand had just been against my cheek.

His face had been close to mine.

And now I was standing in the same grocery aisle, trying to make sense of something I hadn't expected.

I could still feel the basket handle pressed into my fingers.

I looked down at it.

The milk was still there.

So were the few other things I'd decided I could afford.

It was ridiculous that I noticed my groceries at a moment like that.

But I did.

I suppose I needed something ordinary to hold on to.

Something that made sense.

Adrian Moretti standing in front of me didn't make sense.

The kiss didn't make sense.

And Nathan's reaction made even less sense.

I looked at him again.

His face was pale.

Not slightly uncomfortable.

Not embarrassed.

Pale enough that I wondered whether he felt ill.

His mouth had opened a little.

But he hadn't spoken.

I had spent so much time listening to Nathan explain what was wrong with me that the silence seemed almost impossible.

He had always known what to say when he wanted to hurt someone.

Now he appeared to have forgotten how to speak.

Adrian turned away from me.

The movement was calm.

He didn't appear hurried.

He didn't need to be.

Nathan straightened as Adrian faced him.

I watched the change happen.

His shoulders pulled back for a moment.

I recognized the effort.

He was trying to recover the confidence he'd been wearing when he found me.

But it wasn't working.

The expression on his face gave him away.

His eyes moved from Adrian to the men in dark suits.

Then back again.

I wondered what he was thinking.

Whether he regretted approaching me.

Whether he was frightened by Adrian himself.

Or whether the kiss had told him something he hadn't known.

I wanted to ask.

But I was still trying to breathe normally.

Adrian looked at the wallet in Nathan's hand.

The money was no longer being offered to me.

Nathan had pulled it close to his body.

His fingers were curled around it.

I remembered those same fingers holding the bills toward my face.

The way he'd moved them a little closer when I refused.

The way he'd seemed pleased that I was forced to look at money I badly needed.

A few minutes earlier, Nathan had treated those bills like proof that he was better than me.

Now he appeared to wish he'd never taken them out.

The contrast was so clear that I almost felt dizzy.

His fiancée stood beside him.

Her smile was gone too.

I glanced at her ring.

It still caught the light.

That little diamond had bothered me when I first saw it.

I had remembered mine.

I had remembered the engagement I'd believed in.

But now the ring looked strangely ordinary.

Just a piece of jewelry.

Expensive, perhaps.

But unable to give its wearer the confidence she'd had only moments earlier.

She looked from Nathan to Adrian.

Then at me.

I couldn't tell what she was thinking.

I didn't try to.

I was tired of wondering what people who had hurt me thought about my life.

Adrian's attention remained on Nathan.

He still hadn't said anything.

That silence seemed to make Nathan more uncomfortable.

I looked at the nearby shoppers.

The woman with the cart had stopped pretending to examine the shelves.

She was watching openly now.

The person with the phone was still standing nearby.

I couldn't tell whether she was continuing to record.

I hoped she wasn't.

But I knew I couldn't undo whatever she'd already captured.

The thought made my stomach tighten.

I hadn't wanted strangers to see Nathan humiliating me.

I certainly hadn't wanted them to witness something as personal as a kiss.

Now both moments belonged to anyone who had been watching.

I felt exposed.

More than before.

My hand moved against my stomach.

I pressed my palm lightly against the fabric.

Five months pregnant.

Seventeen dollars in my account.

A basket of groceries.

Those things had been true when I walked into the store.

They were still true.

I knew that, whatever Adrian's arrival meant, I would eventually have to leave the aisle and return to the life I was trying to build.

I would still have decisions to make.

Money to stretch.

A child to prepare for.

And feelings I didn't know how to explain.

But something had changed.

I could see it in Nathan's face.

I could see it in the way people looked at Adrian.

And I could feel it in the sudden absence of the cruel laughter that had followed me through the conversation.

Nobody was laughing now.

Not Nathan.

Not his fiancée.

Not the shoppers.

For the first time since Nathan had recognized me, nobody was asking me to justify my situation.

I wasn't being told I had made bad choices.

I wasn't being questioned about my baby's father.

I wasn't being asked to accept money I didn't want.

There was only silence.

And Adrian.

I remembered what Nathan had said before the doors opened.

That I wasn't capable of raising my child.

Those words had hurt more than anything else he'd said.

I could still hear them.

I wondered whether Adrian had heard them too.

He had looked at Nathan's money.

He had noticed the phone.

He had seen my face.

But I didn't know exactly what he'd witnessed.

Maybe he'd caught enough of the conversation to understand.

Maybe he'd simply seen the way Nathan was standing over me.

I couldn't be certain.

And I wasn't going to pretend I knew what Adrian was thinking.

I only knew what I saw.

He had approached me without hesitation.

He had touched my cheek.

He had kissed me.

And now he was standing between me and the man who'd spent the afternoon trying to make me feel worthless.

I swallowed.

My throat hurt from holding back tears.

I wished I had a moment alone.

Just one moment to sit down and understand what was happening.

Instead, I stood there while Adrian studied Nathan.

Nathan shifted his weight.

He glanced toward his fiancée.

She didn't say anything.

It was strange seeing them that way.

They had been so comfortable together when they were laughing at me.

Their confidence had seemed to feed on itself.

Nathan would say something cruel.

She would laugh.

Then he would say something worse.

I had watched it happen again and again in only a few minutes.

Each reaction encouraged the next.

Now neither seemed interested in encouraging the other.

Nathan looked at Adrian again.

I saw his jaw tighten.

He opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Whatever he'd intended to say, he apparently reconsidered.

I recognized that hesitation.

I had felt it myself many times around Nathan.

The moment when you wanted to answer but were afraid the response would make things worse.

I didn't enjoy seeing him afraid.

I wish I could say I did.

After what he'd said about my child, I might have been entitled to a little satisfaction.

But standing there, I mostly felt exhausted.

I didn't want anyone frightened.

I didn't want a fight.

I wanted Nathan to leave me alone.

I wanted to buy the groceries I could afford.

I wanted to go home without crying in front of strangers.

Those were small wishes.

They had felt enormous when Nathan refused to move.

Now I didn't know what to wish for.

Adrian's presence had changed the situation so quickly that I hadn't caught up.

I looked at him.

The expression on his face was controlled.

I couldn't read it easily.

He hadn't raised his voice.

He hadn't threatened Nathan.

At least, not yet.

And that seemed to be what frightened Nathan most.

The uncertainty.

The knowledge that the man standing before him was someone people in Chicago treated with extraordinary caution.

I remembered hearing Adrian's name spoken quietly.

I remembered the way people described him.

Men with money.

Men with influence.

People who were accustomed to giving orders.

Even they seemed careful about him.

Nathan liked being important.

That much I knew.

But in that grocery aisle, the importance he had spent so much of his life displaying suddenly looked fragile.

His expensive jacket hadn't changed.

His wallet was still full.

His fiancée still wore her diamond.

And yet none of those things gave him the same confidence he'd had a moment earlier.

I couldn't stop noticing that.

He had used money to make me feel powerless.

Now he stood in front of someone whose power frightened him.

It wasn't the outcome I'd planned.

I hadn't asked Adrian to appear.

I hadn't expected him.

I didn't even know what the kiss was meant to tell Nathan.

But I could see that it had told him something.

Nathan's gaze flickered toward me.

Only briefly.

He looked away when he realized I was watching.

That hurt in a different way.

Once, I'd believed Nathan knew me better than anyone.

I'd told him things I wouldn't have told other people.

I'd believed we were building a future together.

And there he was, unable even to meet my eyes after spending several minutes humiliating me in public.

I thought about all the times I'd blamed myself for the collapse of our engagement.

All the moments when I'd wondered whether I'd been too difficult.

Too trusting.

Too willing to believe promises because I wanted them to be true.

I had asked myself those questions so often that I had started treating them like facts.

But watching Nathan now, I saw something I had missed.

He hadn't needed to understand my life before he judged it.

He had looked at a small grocery basket and a pregnant stomach and decided he could shame me.

He hadn't asked whether I was all right.

He hadn't asked what I needed.

He hadn't even listened when I told him to move.

He had simply decided that his money gave him the right to speak.

And I had almost allowed his opinion to become my own.

That was the part I regretted.

Not refusing the bills.

Not answering him.

But the moment when I looked at my basket and felt ashamed.

I lowered my eyes to the milk again.

There was nothing shameful about it.

Nothing shameful about needing food.

Nothing shameful about preparing for a baby with the resources I had.

I knew that now.

I wished I'd known it as firmly when Nathan first started laughing.

Adrian moved slightly.

I looked up.

He had turned fully toward Nathan.

The two men faced each other.

Nathan's wallet was closed now.

His hand remained against it.

His fiancée stood close enough to touch his arm, but she didn't interrupt.

The men in dark suits remained watchful.

The nearby shoppers were silent.

I felt the weight of all those people waiting.

Then Adrian spoke.

His voice was quiet enough that I had to pay attention.

"Would you care to say those things about Claire again?"

Nathan didn't answer.

Adrian held his gaze.

"I'm listening."

I watched Nathan's face.

He looked toward me.

Then back at Adrian.

His mouth moved as though he might speak.

But no words came.

The man who had been so eager to tell strangers why I wasn't fit to raise my baby suddenly couldn't repeat a single sentence.

And I stood beside Adrian, still holding my groceries, realizing how completely the balance of that afternoon had changed.

Nathan had wanted me to feel powerless.

Now he was the one who couldn't find his voice.

I looked at Adrian.

I still didn't understand why he had come straight to me.

I still didn't know what his kiss meant.

And I had no explanation for why Nathan seemed to recognize a connection between us that I hadn't expected him to see.

But one thing was clear.

Nathan knew exactly who had confronted him.

And whatever he believed Adrian Moretti might do, it was enough to make him stop.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5:
