3 – THREE MEN IN BLACK SUITS WALKED INTO THE STORE AND THE NAME EVERYONE FEARED SUDDENLY BECAME MY PROBLEM

At first, I thought someone important had entered the store.

I could hear the change before I understood it.

Conversations stopped.

A shopping cart rolled a little farther and then went still.

The woman who had been watching us turned her head toward the entrance.

I followed her gaze.

Two large men in dark suits had come through the automatic doors.

They didn't look like ordinary customers.

Their attention moved across the store before either of them took another step.

One looked down the nearest aisle.

The other watched the people standing near the front.

A third man came in behind them.

He was dressed much the same way.

Dark suit.

Straight posture.

A face that gave nothing away.

I had no idea why they were there.

But I knew their arrival had nothing to do with groceries.

Nathan turned farther to see what everyone was looking at.

His fiancée shifted beside him.

The woman with the phone lowered it slightly.

I remember noticing that.

A few seconds earlier, she had seemed eager to record my embarrassment.

Now she looked uncertain about whether she wanted to be seen recording at all.

Then another man entered.

Adrian Moretti.

I recognized him immediately.

There were people in Chicago whose names you could mention casually.

Business owners.

Wealthy families.

Men who liked being recognized when they walked into a room.

Adrian wasn't one of them.

People spoke about him carefully.

Sometimes quietly.

Sometimes not at all.

He was known as a mafia boss, and his reputation frightened people who ordinarily seemed afraid of nothing.

I had heard his name enough times to understand that.

I had also learned something about how people reacted when he appeared.

They paid attention.

They gave him space.

And they thought carefully before speaking.

I didn't need anyone to tell me who he was.

Seeing the three men ahead of him had already made my stomach tighten.

When Adrian stepped fully into view, I felt it tighten again.

Of all the people who could have walked through those doors, he was the last person I expected.

And I wasn't ready for him to find me standing there.

Not like that.

Not with Nathan blocking the aisle.

Not with my face burning and a stranger's phone pointed toward us.

Not with seventeen dollars in my account and groceries I could barely afford sitting in my basket.

I wanted to look away.

Instead, I watched him.

He didn't pause to examine the displays.

He didn't take a basket.

He walked forward with the quiet certainty of someone who already knew where he was going.

The men in suits remained alert around him.

One of them glanced down our aisle.

Then Adrian looked in the same direction.

His eyes met mine.

Immediately.

I felt my breath catch.

He had found me.

There wasn't any searching expression on his face.

No hesitation.

His attention settled on me as if I were the reason he had entered.

I couldn't understand why.

My mind tried to catch up.

I looked behind me, almost hoping there was someone else he was watching.

There wasn't.

When I turned back, his eyes were still on me.

Nathan noticed.

I saw the exact moment he became uncomfortable.

His shoulders stiffened.

The wallet in his hand stopped moving.

Then he looked from Adrian to me.

I knew he was trying to understand the connection.

I was trying to understand it myself.

Adrian continued toward us.

Each step seemed to make the aisle smaller.

I became sharply aware of everything around me.

The cold air from the refrigerators.

The plastic handle digging into my palm.

The milk carton leaning inside my basket.

The phone still held by the nearby shopper.

The diamond on Nathan's fiancée's hand.

I wanted to set the basket down.

I didn't.

My fingers were gripping it too tightly.

Nathan moved a little to one side.

Not much.

But enough for me to notice.

A few moments earlier, I had asked him repeatedly to move.

He had refused.

Now he was making room without being asked.

That told me more about Adrian's reputation than anything I had heard before.

Nathan recognized him.

I could see that clearly.

His expression had changed.

The easy smile was gone.

He looked as though he had just realized he'd been speaking too loudly in a room where someone dangerous was listening.

His fiancée looked at him.

"Nathan?"

He didn't answer.

She followed his gaze.

When she saw Adrian approaching, her own expression became uncertain.

I wondered whether she recognized him too.

I didn't know.

I only knew she stopped laughing.

That was the first time since they'd found me in the dairy aisle that neither of them seemed interested in saying something cruel.

I should have felt relieved.

Instead, I was frightened.

Because Nathan's anger was familiar.

I knew how he spoke.

I knew how he tried to make people feel smaller.

I had spent enough time with him to recognize what came next.

But Adrian was different.

I didn't know what he wanted.

I didn't know why he had come to the store.

And I certainly didn't know what he intended to do when he reached me.

The three men in suits remained close enough to watch.

Adrian's expression didn't change as he approached.

He looked directly at me.

Then his gaze moved downward.

To my stomach.

For a moment, his eyes rested there.

I felt my hand move over my belly again.

It was instinctive.

I had done it when Nathan insulted me.

I had done it when his fiancée laughed.

And now I did it when one of the most feared men in Chicago stood only a short distance away.

Adrian looked up.

His attention shifted to Nathan.

Then to the wallet.

The bills were still visible.

Nathan seemed to realize that at the same moment.

He started to close it.

Adrian watched the movement.

He didn't say anything.

He looked toward the person holding the phone.

I followed his eyes.

The shopper's arm lowered a little farther.

She wasn't smiling.

No one was.

The entire scene had changed, even though Adrian hadn't spoken a word.

I remember thinking how strange that was.

Nathan had used his money to make himself important.

Adrian hadn't shown anyone money.

He hadn't raised his voice.

He hadn't even introduced himself.

Yet the people around him were acting as if his arrival mattered more than everything Nathan had said.

I didn't find that comforting.

Power had already caused enough trouble in my life.

I wasn't eager to be standing between two men who believed people should make room for them.

But Adrian kept walking.

And this time, when I looked at him, I noticed something I hadn't expected.

He wasn't watching the crowd anymore.

He was watching my face.

I wondered what he could see.

The tears I hadn't let fall.

The color in my cheeks.

The way I held my basket like a shield.

I felt ashamed.

Not because I'd done anything wrong.

Because I couldn't bear another person seeing how badly I was struggling.

Looking back, that shame makes me sad.

I had been buying food for myself and my unborn child.

I hadn't stolen anything.

I hadn't asked Nathan for help.

I hadn't harmed anyone.

Yet I stood there feeling as though I had been caught doing something disgraceful.

All because a wealthy man had decided my need for groceries was something he could use against me.

Adrian came closer.

Nathan cleared his throat.

It was a small sound.

Nervous.

I had almost never heard him sound nervous.

When we were engaged, Nathan filled every silence.

He liked to explain things.

He liked people listening.

He liked hearing himself offer advice no one had requested.

Now he seemed unable to find a single sentence.

I looked at him.

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

His attention remained fixed on Adrian.

The men in dark suits stopped at a distance.

Adrian kept moving.

I could feel my pulse in my throat.

Part of me wanted to explain what had happened.

I wanted to say Nathan had approached me.

That I had asked him to leave.

That I hadn't wanted any of this attention.

But I didn't know whether Adrian would care.

And I wasn't sure speaking would make things better.

So I stayed quiet.

I kept my hand over my stomach.

Adrian reached us.

He stood directly in front of me.

Close enough that I could see the details of his expression.

He looked at my face.

Then he looked at the basket.

Then back at me.

I tried to say his name.

"Adrian…"

It came out barely above a whisper.

He didn't answer immediately.

He lifted one hand.

I held still.

His fingers touched my cheek.

Gently.

That surprised me more than I expected.

Nathan had been waving money in my face.

His fiancée had been laughing at my body.

Strangers had been watching.

And now the man everyone feared was standing in front of me, touching my face as though he could see how much I was struggling to keep myself together.

I didn't know what to do.

I didn't step forward.

I didn't step away.

I only looked at him.

His hand remained against my cheek for a moment.

The store was almost silent.

I could hear the refrigeration units humming behind me.

I remember that sound because it made the moment feel unreal.

Everything ordinary was still happening.

The milk was still in my basket.

The vitamins still needed to be bought.

My balance was still seventeen dollars.

Nothing about my real problems had changed.

Yet I was standing face-to-face with Adrian Moretti while Nathan looked on.

And I knew something was about to happen that I couldn't take back.

Adrian moved closer.

I saw his face turn toward mine.

I stopped breathing for a second.

Then he kissed me.

Right there.

In the dairy aisle.

In front of Nathan.

In front of the woman wearing a ring almost identical to the one Nathan had once given me.

In front of the shoppers who had watched me being humiliated.

For a moment, I couldn't think.

My hand remained over my stomach.

My other hand stayed wrapped around the basket handle.

I wasn't prepared for the kiss.

I wasn't prepared for anyone in that store to see me that way.

And I wasn't prepared for what happened when Adrian drew back.

I looked at Nathan.

His face had lost its color.

The man who had been enjoying my embarrassment only minutes earlier now looked frightened.

Truly frightened.

I had never seen him like that before.

I stood there trying to understand what Adrian's kiss meant.

Nathan seemed to understand something I didn't.

And for the first time that afternoon, he wasn't looking down at me.

<a
