2 – THE WOMAN WEARING A RING LIKE MINE LAUGHED AT MY BABY WHILE NATHAN WAITED FOR ME TO BEG

Nathan looked at me as if I had done something unreasonable.

All I had done was refuse his money.

He held the bills in front of him for another moment.

Then he gave a short laugh.

"You're still the same."

I knew what he meant.

He used to say that whenever I wouldn't agree with him.

Sometimes he said I made simple things complicated.

Sometimes he accused me of turning kindness into an argument.

I had believed him often enough that I used to apologize before I even understood what I was apologizing for.

That afternoon, I didn't.

I kept my eyes on his face.

"I told you I don't need anything from you."

His fiancée looked down at my basket.

"That seems a little hard to believe."

She wasn't loud.

She didn't need to be.

The grocery aisle was quiet enough for the people nearby to hear every word.

I could feel them listening.

Not everyone was staring.

Some looked away when I turned.

Others pretended to read labels or examine the shelves.

But they were still there.

And I knew at least one phone was still pointed at us.

I wished I could disappear into the ordinary noise of the store.

The wheels of shopping carts.

The humming refrigerators.

The sound of someone asking where the bread was.

Anything but Nathan's voice.

He folded the money and held it loosely.

"Think about it for a second."

"I have."

"No, you haven't."

He looked at my stomach.

"You're about to have a child."

I felt my hand settle there again.

Five months.

I wasn't close enough to delivery to hold my baby yet.

But the pregnancy had already changed everything about the way I thought.

I couldn't go a single day without wondering whether I was doing enough.

Eating enough.

Saving enough.

Making the right choices.

I didn't need Nathan adding his judgment to the list.

"I know I'm having a baby."

"Then start acting like it."

His words stung.

I could have answered immediately.

I could have reminded him how little he knew about my days now.

How much thought went into every purchase.

How hard it was to stand in that store and decide between food I wanted and vitamins I needed.

But I knew he wasn't interested.

He wanted me to defend myself.

He wanted to keep me standing there.

The longer I explained, the longer he could pretend he was entitled to question me.

So I said nothing.

His fiancée took my silence as permission.

"Honestly, Nathan, she's making this difficult for no reason."

I looked at her.

Her ring flashed again when she moved her hand.

There were moments when I wondered how much she had known about our engagement.

Had he told her he was planning a wedding with me?

Had she known what it meant when he disappeared to see her?

Had she cared?

Those questions had once occupied entire nights.

But I didn't ask them.

I had already learned that knowing every detail of a betrayal didn't make it hurt less.

Sometimes it only gave you more things to remember.

Nathan slipped one of the bills between two fingers.

"One hundred dollars could make a difference right now."

I hated that he was right about that one small thing.

A hundred dollars would have made a difference.

I could have stopped calculating.

I could have bought the eggs.

I could have picked up what I needed without counting everything twice.

For one moment, I imagined accepting the money and leaving.

I imagined being practical.

I imagined telling myself I was doing it for the baby.

Then I looked at Nathan.

He was smiling.

Not kindly.

He was waiting.

I realized he wanted to see the exact moment I gave in.

He wanted proof that I had been wrong to refuse him.

And I couldn't bear the thought of placing that proof in his hand.

"No, Nathan."

He let out an irritated breath.

"Unbelievable."

I glanced at the milk in my basket.

The carton had tipped against another item.

I straightened it.

Such a small thing.

But I needed something to do with my hands.

Something normal.

Something that belonged to the reason I had entered the store in the first place.

I hadn't come there to revisit my engagement.

I hadn't come to hear insults about my body.

I hadn't come to stand beside a stranger's phone while the woman who had replaced me laughed at my pregnancy.

I had come to buy groceries.

That was all.

I looked at Nathan again.

"Can I go now?"

His face tightened.

"You make it sound like I'm keeping you prisoner."

"Then step aside."

He didn't.

His fiancée gave me a long look.

"You know, you could simply thank him."

"For what?"

She looked surprised.

"For offering to help you."

I nodded toward the money.

"He can offer. I can say no."

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Nathan's smile disappeared.

I knew that expression too.

It was the look he wore when a conversation wasn't following the script he had prepared.

He usually found a way to make it my fault.

This time was no different.

"You've always been difficult."

I looked at him.

"Maybe."

The word surprised me.

I hadn't meant to say it.

But once it was out, I realized I didn't need to argue over his opinion of me.

Let him think I was difficult.

Let him think I was proud.

I didn't have to correct every ugly thing he believed.

His fiancée shifted closer to him.

Nathan put the money back into his wallet, but he kept it open.

"Do you have any idea what kind of responsibility you're taking on?"

I stared at him.

Of all the questions he could have asked, that one felt especially cruel.

I thought about how often I woke up worrying.

How many times I had checked my account balance.

How I had stood in front of those eggs before putting them back.

How I had read the label on the prenatal vitamins because I wanted to be certain I was buying the right ones.

Then I looked at the man standing in front of me.

He saw a small basket.

He saw my pregnant stomach.

He saw clothes that weren't expensive.

And he believed those things told him everything.

"I think about it every day."

He gave a dismissive shrug.

"Thinking isn't the same as being ready."

"I know."

That answer stopped him for a moment.

I hadn't intended to sound defeated.

I was just telling the truth.

I wasn't ready for everything.

I didn't know how I would solve every problem.

I didn't have enough money.

I didn't have the life I had planned.

But I knew I wanted my child.

And I knew my child deserved better than to be treated as an excuse for someone else's cruelty.

Nathan shook his head.

"This is exactly what happens when people make bad decisions."

His fiancée laughed under her breath.

I felt my cheeks burn.

He had said something about the baby's father earlier.

Now he was standing there, deciding what kind of mother I would become.

I couldn't change his opinion.

But I could stop allowing it to guide the conversation.

I lifted my chin.

"You don't get to decide whether I'll be a good mother."

Nathan frowned.

"That's not what I said."

"It's what you're trying to tell me."

He looked toward the nearby shoppers.

I saw him notice the phone.

For a second, I hoped that might make him stop.

Instead, he straightened.

He seemed almost pleased to have witnesses.

I understood something then.

Nathan wasn't embarrassed by his behavior.

He thought he looked generous.

He thought the person recording would see a wealthy man offering help to a woman who refused it.

He didn't seem to understand what everyone else might see.

Or perhaps he didn't care.

He held out the wallet again.

"Take the money and stop making a scene."

I stared at him.

He was the one who had approached me.

He was the one standing in my way.

He was the one making comments about my pregnancy in front of strangers.

And now he wanted me to believe I was responsible for the attention.

I almost laughed.

But I was too close to crying.

My eyes burned.

I blinked hard.

I wouldn't let him see.

Not if I could help it.

I looked down at my stomach.

My hand rested against the fabric stretched across it.

I thought about the little person growing inside me.

One day, my child would look to me to learn how people should treat each other.

What was acceptable.

What wasn't.

When to be kind.

When to leave.

And suddenly, I knew what I wanted to say.

I looked straight at Nathan.

"I might not have much right now."

He waited.

I continued.

"But I can teach my child something you never learned."

His expression sharpened.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

I felt my heart beating hard.

I knew I was about to make him angry.

Still, I answered.

"Having money doesn't make it all right to hurt people."

The aisle seemed quieter.

I heard a shopping cart wheel squeak somewhere behind me.

Nathan stared.

His fiancée stopped smiling.

I hadn't raised my voice.

I hadn't insulted his clothes or his money.

I had simply said what I believed.

That seemed to upset him more.

"Watch yourself, Claire."

I looked at him.

There had been a time when those words would have made me apologize.

I would have tried to soften what I'd said.

I would have reminded him that I appreciated his concern.

But I didn't appreciate it.

There was nothing caring about the way he was speaking to me.

"I want to leave."

He took a small step closer.

The smell of his expensive cologne reached me.

I remembered that scent.

I remembered standing close enough to recognize it on his jacket.

The familiarity made me feel sick.

He was still the same person.

The same face.

The same voice.

The same confidence.

Only now I could see what I had worked so hard not to notice.

His kindness depended on whether I did what he wanted.

His generosity depended on whether I agreed to feel grateful.

And his affection had never protected me from his contempt.

He looked at my stomach once more.

Then he said something that made my fingers tighten around the basket.

He told me I wasn't fit to bring up a child.

For a second, I couldn't answer.

I stood there with my mouth slightly open.

I had been trying not to cry because he was embarrassing me.

Now I was trying not to cry because he had reached the one subject I couldn't bear hearing him attack.

My baby.

I pressed my hand against my belly.

Nathan waited.

I could see it in his face.

He expected me to break.

Maybe he expected me to take the money.

Maybe he wanted me to beg him to stop.

I wasn't sure.

All I knew was that I couldn't let him continue.

I drew in a breath.

"Don't speak about my child again."

My voice shook.

I hated that.

Nathan looked almost satisfied.

Then, behind him, I heard the automatic doors open.

I didn't turn immediately.

I was still watching Nathan.

Still trying to steady myself.

But something changed near the front of the store.

The ordinary sounds seemed to fade.

People began looking toward the entrance.

And Nathan, who had been so comfortable holding my attention, finally glanced away.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: THREE MEN IN BLACK SUITS
