3 – The Ambulance Took My Husband From His Own Wake, And The Police Soon Found Evidence That His Collapse Had Not Been Natural

I had spent two days trying to accept that Mark was dead.

Now I was standing beside his coffin, begging him to stay alive.

Dr. Salgado kept checking him.

He spoke to someone on the telephone.

I couldn't follow everything he said.

I only understood that he wanted an ambulance as quickly as possible.

Chloe stood beside me.

She had stopped crying.

That frightened me too.

I knelt and put my hands on her shoulders.

"Mommy doesn't know what's happening yet."

She looked at her father.

"Are they going to help him?"

"Yes."

It was the only answer I could give.

I couldn't promise that Mark would wake up.

I couldn't promise that he would come home.

I had already told Chloe once that she would never see him again.

I could not bear the thought of being wrong twice.

Nine minutes passed before the ambulance arrived.

I counted nearly every one of them.

The front door opened.

Paramedics entered carrying equipment.

The relatives moved away from the coffin.

Someone shifted the flowers so they could work.

I watched one of the paramedics check Mark's condition.

Another prepared the monitoring equipment.

The doctor explained what he had noticed.

I heard words I didn't understand.

Then one of the paramedics said there might be faint electrical activity.

I turned toward him.

"What does that mean?"

He kept working.

No one gave me a definite answer.

But nobody was speaking about funeral arrangements anymore.

They were trying to help Mark.

That was enough to keep me standing.

They moved him out of the coffin.

I remember seeing the empty lining afterward.

The space where he had been lying.

I couldn't stop looking at it.

For hours, everyone had treated that coffin as the final place we would ever see him.

Now it was empty because he was being taken to a hospital.

I had never felt hope and terror so strongly at the same time.

The paramedics moved quickly.

I followed them toward the door.

Marcus stepped into my path.

"Claire, we should talk."

I looked at him.

"Move."

"Just listen to me for a moment."

"My husband is being taken to the hospital."

"I know."

I tried to walk past him.

He reached toward my arm.

I pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

He looked startled.

Then his expression hardened.

"You need to think about what comes next."

I stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

He didn't answer.

I moved around him.

Outside, the ambulance was preparing to leave.

I followed because I couldn't imagine doing anything else.

At the hospital, Mark was taken straight into intensive care.

I stood in the corridor until someone asked me to sit down.

Chloe stayed close.

She was still holding the shirt she had brought from home.

At some point, she fell asleep in a chair.

Her head rested against the fabric.

I sat beside her and watched the ICU doors.

Hours passed.

People came through the corridor carrying supplies.

Nurses spoke quietly.

Monitors sounded behind closed doors.

Every time someone approached, I stood.

Most of them walked past me.

I kept opening the last photograph from the clinic.

Mark's hand.

His ring.

The watch showing 4:13.

Then I thought about the watch still running at the wake.

It seemed such a small thing.

A watch was supposed to keep time.

It wasn't proof that someone was alive.

But it had made me look more closely.

And looking more closely had led me to ask questions I should have asked earlier.

I thought about Chloe pressing her ear against her father's chest.

I thought about Marcus reaching for her.

I thought about the doctor looking toward him before agreeing to examine Mark.

The same question kept coming back.

How had this happened?

Just after three in the morning, a detective arrived.

He introduced himself as Detective Harris.

Another officer accompanied him.

I stood when he approached.

"Mrs. Vance?"

"Yes."

He asked whether we could speak.

My first thought was that something had happened to Mark.

I looked toward the ICU.

"Is my husband all right?"

"The medical team is still treating him."

"Then why are the police here?"

Detective Harris pulled a chair closer.

"The hospital contacted us about the circumstances of his condition."

I sat down.

He explained that the doctors had found indications of possible interference.

I asked what kind.

He told me preliminary testing had identified substances that required further examination.

"Are you saying someone gave him something?"

"We're investigating that possibility."

I stared at him.

"Mark collapsed at work."

"That's what we've been told."

I heard the careful way he said it.

"Do you believe something else happened?"

"We need to establish the facts."

I looked toward the ICU window.

My husband was somewhere behind that glass, connected to machines.

For two days, I had believed his heart simply stopped.

Now a detective was telling me the cause might not have been natural.

I felt sick.

Detective Harris asked me about Mark's work.

I told him about the family business.

Mark and Marcus had inherited it after their father died.

It was a cold-chain transportation company.

Mark managed much of the daily operation.

Marcus handled the financial side.

They had worked together for years.

I had always believed they trusted each other.

The detective asked whether Mark had argued with anyone recently.

I hesitated.

Then I told him about the conversation in our kitchen.

About the warning.

About the documents Marcus might ask me to sign.

Harris listened without interrupting.

I also told him what Chloe had heard.

The argument between the brothers.

Marcus demanding control of the company.

Mark accusing him of putting the family at risk.

Then I showed him the photograph that had arrived on my phone.

The one taken at the warehouse.

The timestamp.

The documents spread across the metal table.

He studied the screen.

"Where did this come from?"

"I don't know."

I showed him the messages from the unfamiliar number.

He read them carefully.

Then he asked whether I had told Marcus about them.

"No."

"Good."

I looked at him.

That one word made me feel colder than anything else he had said.

He asked me to preserve everything.

I told him I would.

Then I looked at Chloe.

She was sleeping with Mark's shirt against her cheek.

I asked the detective whether he thought someone had tried to kill my husband.

He didn't answer directly.

He said the investigation was still beginning.

But I could tell the possibility was being taken seriously.

At 5:40 in the morning, a doctor came into the waiting area.

His name was Dr. Patel.

I stood so quickly that my chair moved backward.

"How is Mark?"

The doctor looked tired.

Then he told me Mark was stable.

I covered my face.

For the first time since the call from Marcus, I felt my body relax.

Only a little.

But enough that I nearly fell.

Stable.

I repeated the word quietly.

Dr. Patel explained that they were continuing to monitor him closely.

I asked whether he would regain consciousness.

The doctor couldn't promise anything.

I asked whether there could be lasting damage.

He said it was too early to know.

Then he looked toward Chloe.

"Your daughter was the one who noticed something at the viewing?"

I nodded.

He spoke carefully.

"If the delay had been much longer, his chances could have been worse."

I looked at my little girl.

She hadn't moved.

She didn't know what the doctor had just said.

I wanted to wake her and tell her.

Instead, I let her sleep.

When the medical team finally allowed me into the ICU, I had to stop at the doorway.

Mark was lying in a hospital bed.

There were monitors beside him.

Lines and tubes were attached to his body.

He looked exhausted.

But he was alive.

I walked closer.

His hand rested beside him.

I picked it up.

Warm.

I almost broke down.

Two days earlier, I had stood in a clinic holding that same hand.

I had been told it would never move again.

Now I could feel warmth in his fingers.

I brought his hand close to my face.

"You frightened me."

My voice sounded strange.

I had so many things I wanted to say.

I wanted to ask where he had been inside himself during those two days.

I wanted to ask whether he had heard Chloe.

Whether he had felt her lying beside him.

But I didn't ask any of those things.

I just held his hand.

Then I felt his fingers move.

At first, I thought I had imagined it.

I looked down.

"Mark?"

His fingers shifted again.

I leaned toward him.

"Can you hear me?"

His eyelids moved.

Then his eyes opened slightly.

I pressed the call button.

"Mark, I'm here."

His gaze moved toward me.

He seemed confused.

For a moment, he only stared.

Then he whispered my name.

I started crying.

I had spent two days believing I would never hear his voice again.

Now he had said one word.

And it was enough.

I told him he was in the hospital.

I told him the doctors were helping him.

I told him Chloe was safe.

His breathing became faster.

He tried to speak.

I leaned closer.

"Don't strain yourself."

He tightened his fingers around mine.

"Marcus."

I went still.

"What about him?"

Mark's eyes widened.

There was fear in his face.

Not confusion.

He seemed to know exactly why he was frightened.

"He found out."

I bent closer.

"Found out what?"

Mark swallowed.

"All of it."

A nurse entered.

She asked me to give him time to rest.

I stepped back.

But Mark looked toward me again.

He wanted to say something.

I knew that expression.

I had seen it across our kitchen table two nights before the collapse.

The same worry.

The same urgency.

The police were informed that Mark had regained consciousness.

Detective Harris came to the hospital.

Mark was too weak for a proper interview.

The doctor insisted he could answer only a few questions.

Harris approached his bed.

He asked whether Mark remembered what happened at the warehouse.

Mark nodded faintly.

Then he looked at me.

I stood beside him, holding his hand.

His voice was barely audible.

"Marcus wasn't trying to murder me."

I stared at him.

For a moment, I thought I had misheard.

"What?"

He closed his eyes.

Then opened them again.

"He wanted me gone."

Detective Harris leaned forward.

"What do you mean by gone?"

Mark looked exhausted.

But he forced himself to continue.

"He needed everybody to think I was dead."

I felt the room tilt.

I looked at the monitors.

At the bed.

At the husband I had nearly buried.

Then I understood why Marcus had seemed so desperate to stop anyone from checking him.

Mark hadn't simply been an inconvenience to his brother.

Marcus had wanted the entire world to believe he no longer existed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Police Found Hidden Company Records And A Plan To
