she said quietly.

He didn't turn toward her.

I stood.

"What happened between you and Mark?"

Marcus looked at me for a long moment.

Then he gave a short, bitter smile.

"Your husband never knew when to stop."

I felt my chest tighten.

"Stop what?"

"Getting involved in things he didn't understand."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Mark had worked alongside his brother for years.

They had inherited the company together.

Their father had spent most of his life building it.

Now Marcus was standing beside Mark's coffin speaking about him with resentment.

I thought about the papers in the photograph.

"What did he discover?"

Marcus looked away.

I stepped closer.

"Tell me."

He shook his head.

"You're making a mistake."

Behind me, Teresa spoke again.

"Marcus, please."

There was fear in her voice.

I turned toward her.

She stopped talking.

Then Chloe cried out.

"Mom!"

I spun around.

She was standing beside the couch.

Her arm was extended toward the coffin.

I rushed to her.

"What happened?"

She pointed.

"Daddy moved."

I looked.

Mark still appeared motionless.

But Chloe was shaking her head.

"I saw him."

Dr. Salgado pushed forward.

He asked everyone to move out of the way.

This time, Marcus said nothing.

The doctor bent over Mark.

He checked his neck again.

Then he leaned closer to his face.

I stood beside him.

I couldn't hear anything except the sound of people shifting behind us.

Dr. Salgado examined Mark for what felt like an eternity.

Then he looked up.

His face had changed.

He told someone to call emergency services immediately.

I grabbed his arm.

"Doctor, tell me what's happening."

He looked at me.

"Claire, there may still be signs of life."

I couldn't speak.

He turned toward the relatives.

"Call for an ambulance.
