3 – I Stood Beside the Connecting Door With My Phone Recording While the Women I Trusted Explained Exactly How They Intended to Hurt Me

I had never imagined recording a conversation between my bridesmaids would become part of my wedding preparations.

But there I was.

Barefoot.

Holding my phone.

Listening to women I had called friends discuss how to make the next day go wrong.

I opened the recording app.

My thumb hovered above the button.

For a moment, I hesitated.

It felt wrong to collect proof against people I knew.

Then Vanessa laughed again.

I remembered the dress.

The rings.

The way she had spoken about Ethan.

I pressed record.

I carried the phone toward the connecting door.

The women were still talking loudly enough for me to hear them through it.

I held the phone close to the wall.

Then I stood still.

I didn't want to make a sound that would let them know I was there.

Even moving my feet seemed too loud.

I could hear voices from the next room.

Some words were muffled.

Others came through clearly.

Vanessa wasn't trying to hide what she thought.

She had no reason to believe anyone outside her room was listening.

That confidence was what gave me the chance to record her.

She returned to the idea of interfering with the ceremony.

The wedding dress was one option.

The rings were another.

She spoke as though either problem would be enough to cause a serious disruption.

I tried not to react.

My throat felt tight.

I kept watching the screen on my phone.

The recording time was increasing.

A few seconds.

Then more.

I wanted the women to say everything again.

Not because I enjoyed hearing it.

Because I knew what would happen if I confronted them with nothing but my word.

Vanessa would deny intending to harm me.

She might say she'd had too much to drink.

She might claim she was joking.

The others could tell the same story.

And suddenly I would be the one creating trouble on the night before my own wedding.

I knew how easily a conversation could turn.

Someone would start crying.

Someone would insist I'd misunderstood.

Someone would remind me how much work Vanessa had done.

And I would be forced to defend what I had heard while everyone else argued about what she meant.

I didn't want an argument about her intentions.

I wanted a record of her actual words.

Then the conversation shifted toward Ethan again.

Vanessa spoke about trying to get him alone.

She made it clear that her interest hadn't begun that evening.

She had been looking for opportunities over several months.

I felt the same cold sensation I had experienced when I first heard her voice.

Months.

That word mattered.

It meant her feelings were not sudden.

It wasn't a foolish comment made after a few drinks.

She had been thinking about my fiancé while helping me prepare to marry him.

I looked toward the wardrobe.

I remembered her offering to take care of one detail after another.

I remembered the ease with which I had agreed.

I wanted to sit down.

Instead, I stayed where I was.

The phone continued recording.

I could hear the other women laughing.

Nobody sounded particularly troubled.

Nobody said the conversation had gone too far.

I waited for someone to object.

Someone to say that damaging the dress would be cruel.

Someone to remind Vanessa that Ethan had chosen to marry me.

But no one did.

That silence from my friends became part of what I remembered.

Not because silence always means agreement.

Sometimes people don't know what to say.

Sometimes they are uncomfortable.

But these women weren't merely silent.

They were laughing with her.

They were asking questions.

They were treating the possibility of ruining my wedding like an entertaining conversation.

I had invited them to celebrate with me.

Instead, they were discussing how to spoil the celebration.

I watched the numbers on the recording screen.

Two minutes passed.

Then three.

My arm began to ache from holding the phone in place.

I lowered it slightly.

Then raised it again.

I didn't want to lose any of the conversation.

Vanessa mentioned how she had been trying to get Ethan's attention.

Her tone bothered me more than the words themselves.

She sounded proud.

As if pursuing a friend's fiancé were something impressive.

I wondered whether she would have spoken so freely if she knew I was standing only a few feet away.

Probably not.

That told me something too.

She knew enough to hide her behavior from me.

She was comfortable discussing it with the others because she believed they wouldn't expose her.

She had chosen her audience.

She simply hadn't realized the wall wasn't keeping her words inside the room.

At one point, I caught my reflection in the dark television screen across from the bed.

I barely recognized the expression on my face.

My mouth was slightly open.

My shoulders were stiff.

I looked frightened.

And I was.

Not because I thought Vanessa could take Ethan from me merely by wanting him.

I was frightened by how little I understood about the people I had trusted.

The room suddenly felt unfamiliar.

The dress hanging nearby didn't comfort me.

The vow cards on the nightstand seemed strangely far away.

Everything connected to the wedding had become something I needed to protect.

I had spent so much time preparing for mistakes.

Late arrivals.

Missing supplies.

Changes in the schedule.

I had worried about ordinary problems.

It had never occurred to me that I needed to prepare for deliberate interference from my own bridal party.

Another laugh came through the wall.

I closed my eyes briefly.

Then opened them.

I had to keep thinking clearly.

The women next door believed I was asleep.

They believed the original arrangements were still in place.

They believed they would wake up and move through the day exactly as planned.

For the moment, they had no idea that I knew anything.

That gave me an advantage.

I wasn't comfortable thinking about my friends in those terms.

An advantage.

A plan.

Evidence.

Those were words I associated with arguments and problems, not a wedding.

But I had to deal with the situation in front of me.

Not the one I wished I had.

The recording continued.

Vanessa's voice was still audible.

She talked about the possibilities as if she had plenty of time to choose between them.

I listened until I had captured almost four minutes.

Then I stopped.

My thumb felt unsteady against the screen.

I saved the recording.

For a moment, I stood without moving.

The women were still in the next room.

The hotel was still quiet.

Nothing had happened that anyone outside those two rooms would have noticed.

But I was no longer dependent on my memory of what had been said.

I had heard the conversation.

Now I had preserved it.

I went back to the bed.

Sat down.

Placed the phone beside my vow cards.

The screen was still lit.

I stared at the saved recording.

I didn't replay it immediately.

I couldn't bear to hear Vanessa's voice again yet.

I knew what was on it.

That was enough.

I looked at the time.

The morning was approaching.

I needed to decide how to use the hours I had left.

There was a part of me that still wanted to call Vanessa.

I wanted to ask her what I had ever done to deserve this.

I wanted to know whether she had ever genuinely cared about me.

I wanted Kendra to explain why she had laughed.

Those questions mattered to me.

But their answers could wait.

My wedding couldn't.

The ceremony would begin whether I had resolved those friendships or not.

People would arrive.

Arrangements would move forward.

And if Vanessa remained in control of important details, I would spend the entire day wondering what she might do next.

I could not put myself through that.

I could not stand in front of Ethan while worrying that somebody had hidden the rings.

I could not get dressed while wondering whether a glass of wine would end up on my gown.

I could not look at the bridesmaids and pretend their laughter meant nothing.

I had learned too much.

So I thought about who I could trust.

Not who had promised to help.

Who had given me reasons to believe they would actually protect me.

My older brother, Ryan, came to mind first.

Then my cousin Chloe.

Both were part of my life outside the wedding plans.

Neither had been in the room next door.

I thought about our wedding planner.

The planner knew how the day was supposed to work.

If anything needed changing, that person would need to know.

And there was the hotel manager.

The hotel was where the women expected to find me in the morning.

It was also where my dress was hanging.

I looked around the room.

I understood that I couldn't simply move one object and consider the problem solved.

The women knew my room.

They knew the schedule.

They knew their assigned responsibilities.

They expected to be involved in everything.

If I wanted to prevent them from interfering, I had to make changes they wouldn't see coming.

Quiet changes.

Practical changes.

I picked up my phone again.

The saved recording was there.

So was Ethan's last message.

I looked from one to the other.

One showed me what Vanessa wanted to do.

The other reminded me why the wedding mattered in the first place.

I loved Ethan.

I wanted to marry him.

I didn't want Vanessa to turn our ceremony into a scene built around her jealousy.

I didn't want my wedding day remembered as the day everyone fought in a hotel hallway.

I wanted to stand beside the man I loved and say the vows I had written.

Those words were still on the nightstand.

I reached for the cards.

Straightened the stack.

Put them down again.

Then I made a decision.

I would not confront Vanessa before the ceremony.

I would not warn the others that I had heard them.

I would make sure they no longer had the opportunities they were counting on.

And I would do it before the morning began.

I unlocked my phone.

It was time to ask for help.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4:
