2 – Every Little Comment My Maid of Honor Had Made About My Fiancé Suddenly Sounded Different After I Heard Her Laughing Next Door

The worst part wasn't hearing Vanessa say she wanted Ethan.

It was remembering how long I had been giving her opportunities to get close to him.

I sat on the bed while the conversation continued through the wall.

Every few seconds, another memory came back.

And each one made me feel a little more foolish.

Six months earlier, I had been grateful when Vanessa offered to help organize the wedding.

She seemed eager to take responsibility.

If there was a decision to make, she wanted to be involved.

If something needed checking, she offered to handle it.

I had been busy.

There were so many small arrangements to keep track of that having someone willing to help felt like a gift.

Vanessa made herself useful.

I didn't question why she needed to be involved in everything.

I liked feeling that someone cared enough to take the work seriously.

That was my mistake.

Not accepting help.

Assuming that every offer came from a good place.

Vanessa had a particular way of talking about Ethan.

She rarely criticized him.

Instead, she praised him in ways that made me feel as if I should be grateful he had chosen me.

Sometimes she would say I was fortunate that he preferred quiet, pleasant women.

She made it sound like a compliment.

I accepted it as one.

Now, sitting in that hotel room, I could hear the meaning underneath it.

Vanessa thought I was ordinary.

Safe.

The kind of woman a man settled for rather than truly wanted.

I remembered feeling uncomfortable when she said those things.

I had never told her.

I didn't want to turn every careless remark into an argument.

I especially didn't want wedding planning to become a competition between friends.

So I smiled.

Changed the subject.

Let the moment pass.

There had been other moments too.

At our engagement party, Vanessa kept finding reasons to stand near Ethan.

She laughed loudly when he spoke.

She touched his arm while they talked.

More than once, I noticed her leaning toward him.

I remember looking across the room and wondering why she seemed so interested in keeping his attention.

Then I told myself to stop.

He was my fiancé.

She was my friend.

I wasn't going to embarrass myself by acting suspicious over a conversation.

I had been proud of that decision.

I thought it showed maturity.

Now I understood that maturity had nothing to do with ignoring something that made me uncomfortable.

I should have been willing to ask questions.

I should have paid attention to the pattern instead of explaining away each separate moment.

But none of that could be undone from the edge of a hotel bed.

The wedding was only hours away.

Vanessa was next door.

And she had a plan.

I listened to the women talk about the dress again.

They treated the idea of staining it like a prank.

One of them laughed.

Someone spoke over someone else.

I couldn't catch every word.

I didn't need to.

I knew the important part.

They were considering doing something that would make it impossible for me to walk into my wedding looking the way I had planned.

I glanced toward the garment bag.

The white fabric was still.

I wondered how easily Vanessa could have reached it the following morning.

She was supposed to be helping me prepare.

She had been close enough to everything that I never would have questioned her entering my room.

If she arrived carrying a drink, I probably wouldn't have thought anything of it.

That realization frightened me.

Not because of the wine itself.

Because I understood how much damage a person could do when you trusted them not to try.

The rings were even worse.

Vanessa had offered to take responsibility for them.

At the time, I had thought that was sensible.

She was organized.

She was my maid of honor.

She liked knowing where everything was.

I had no reason to believe she would deliberately misplace something so important.

Now I had heard her suggest doing exactly that.

I looked down at my hands.

My engagement ring was still there.

I turned it slightly with my thumb.

Ethan had asked me to marry him because we wanted a future together.

That was what the ring meant to me.

To Vanessa, apparently, the wedding rings were objects she could use to interfere with that future.

I felt sick.

Then my mind returned to something else she had said.

She claimed Ethan had nearly chosen her.

I didn't know what that meant.

I didn't know whether she was telling the truth.

I didn't know whether she had misunderstood some ordinary interaction or was making herself sound more successful than she had been.

For one terrible moment, I wanted to believe her.

Not because I thought Ethan had betrayed me.

Because hearing a confident lie can make you question something you knew only minutes earlier.

I picked up my phone.

His message was still there.

He was excited to see me at the altar.

He had been affectionate and calm.

Nothing in the way he spoke to me suggested that he was preparing to leave me for Vanessa.

I read his words again.

Then I put the phone down.

There was a difference between what I knew and what Vanessa wanted me to believe.

I knew what she had said.

I knew she wanted him.

I knew she had been looking for ways to interfere with our wedding.

I did not know that Ethan had encouraged her.

That mattered.

I wasn't going to turn one person's cruelty into an accusation against someone else without evidence.

Still, it hurt.

I had spent months watching Ethan and Vanessa interact without imagining that she was measuring every conversation for signs of an opportunity.

And I had spent those same months telling myself she was happy for us.

I thought about the women listening to her.

Kendra was among them.

That was another part I struggled to accept.

Kendra had known me for years.

We had shared the kind of ordinary conversations that make a friendship feel permanent.

School memories.

Personal worries.

Small things that wouldn't matter to anyone outside the friendship.

I had never believed she would sit in a room while someone discussed humiliating me.

Yet I could hear her.

Her voice wasn't uncertain.

She wasn't telling Vanessa to stop.

She sounded entertained.

I wondered whether she had known about Vanessa's feelings before that night.

Had she noticed the way Vanessa behaved around Ethan?

Had they discussed it when I wasn't there?

Had they laughed about how little I seemed to understand?

I couldn't answer any of those questions.

That was what made the situation so painful.

For every thing I now knew, there were several things I could only imagine.

And imagining them wasn't helping.

The voices grew louder for a moment.

I heard Vanessa again.

She sounded relaxed.

Completely unworried.

There was no sign that she understood the seriousness of what she was proposing.

No sign that she was thinking about me as someone who would have to live with what happened.

She was talking about my wedding as if it were an obstacle in her way.

I sat with that thought.

I had called her my friend.

I had invited her to stand closest to me during one of the most important moments of my life.

I had given her a position of trust.

And she had mistaken that trust for weakness.

At first, I felt embarrassed.

Then angry.

Then something else began to happen.

I stopped asking myself why she would do this.

There was no answer that could make it acceptable.

Whether she was jealous, selfish, or convinced Ethan belonged with her didn't change what she was planning.

The important question was no longer what Vanessa felt.

It was what she could still do.

The dress was in my room.

The rings were part of the ceremony.

The women next door expected to spend the morning with me.

They expected me to follow the schedule we had already arranged.

They expected me not to suspect anything.

And Vanessa had said, in front of the others, that I would realize what was happening only when it was too late.

I thought about those words.

Maybe she was right about the person I had been.

Maybe I had taken too long to notice things.

But it wasn't too late yet.

The morning hadn't started.

The ceremony hadn't happened.

Nothing had been ruined.

I still had time to protect what mattered.

I stood up and walked toward the connecting door.

There was a narrow space beneath it.

The light from the other room showed faintly along the carpet.

I could hear the women more clearly there.

I put my hand against the door.

For a second, I imagined opening it.

Vanessa would look at me.

The others would fall silent.

There would be explanations.

Excuses.

Maybe tears.

I could almost hear them saying I had misunderstood.

I had no intention of letting that happen.

Not yet.

I removed my hand from the door.

Then I went back to the bed and picked up my phone.

I wasn't ready to confront Vanessa.

First, I needed something she couldn't laugh away or deny.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: I
