1 – I Was Supposed to Marry the Man I Loved in the Morning, but Someone Behind My Hotel Wall Had Other Plans

I used to believe that the people closest to me would never deliberately hurt me.

That belief lasted until the night before my wedding.

I was sitting on the edge of a hotel bed when I heard my maid of honor discussing how to ruin the next morning.

Not joking about it.

Planning it.

And for several minutes, I couldn't make myself move.

My name is Olivia.

At the time, I was less than twelve hours away from marrying Ethan, the man I had chosen to spend my life with.

Everything was supposed to be ready.

The flowers had been arranged.

The ceremony had been planned.

My wedding dress was hanging a few feet away from me.

And the women I had invited to stand beside me were in the next hotel room.

I trusted them.

That was the part I kept coming back to afterward.

I had trusted them enough to give them responsibilities that mattered.

I had trusted them with my wedding day.

It was a little after midnight at the Lakeview Hotel in Newport, Rhode Island.

The hotel was an old building overlooking the harbor.

We had reserved several rooms there so everyone could stay close before the ceremony.

My bridesmaids had been excited about the arrangement.

I had been excited too.

I thought spending the night in the same hotel would make the morning easier.

No one would have to travel far.

No one would be late.

We could get ready without rushing from one place to another.

That was how I had imagined it.

Instead, I sat alone in my room, unable to sleep.

My dress was hanging from the wardrobe door.

The white garment bag covered most of it.

I could see the hanger at the top and the soft outline of the gown beneath the fabric.

I had checked it twice before getting into bed.

Not because anything was wrong.

I just wanted everything to be right.

My vow cards were on the nightstand.

I had written the words myself, then copied them carefully so I could read them without stumbling.

I picked up the cards once more.

Read the first line.

Put them down again.

I was nervous, but it was the kind of nervousness I had expected.

The good kind.

The kind that came from knowing something important was about to happen.

My phone was beside the cards.

Ethan had sent me a final message before going to bed.

He told me he was looking forward to seeing me at the ceremony.

He called me beautiful.

I had read that message so many times that I knew exactly where the words appeared on the screen.

I read it again.

Then I turned off the lamp.

For a little while, I listened to the hotel settling around me.

There were faint noises from outside.

A door closing somewhere down the hall.

Voices that came and went.

Then laughter from the adjoining room.

I knew my bridesmaids were still awake.

I didn't mind.

They had spent months helping me prepare, and I figured they deserved a night to relax.

I rolled onto my side.

I remember pulling the blanket toward my shoulder.

Then I heard Vanessa.

Her voice carried clearly through the wall.

Vanessa was my maid of honor.

She wasn't someone I had invited because I needed another person to fill a place.

I had wanted her there.

I had trusted her with details I didn't want to worry about myself.

For six months, she had been involved in nearly every part of the planning.

She always seemed to have an opinion.

She always wanted to handle something.

I had taken that as enthusiasm.

The first words I heard that night made me sit up.

Vanessa was talking about my dress.

She said someone should spill red wine on it.

If that didn't work, they could make sure the wedding rings went missing.

She didn't seem concerned about which method they used.

She wanted the ceremony disrupted.

Then she said something that made the blood drain from my face.

She said I wasn't good enough for Ethan.

I stared at the wall.

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.

Maybe I had missed the beginning of the conversation.

Maybe they were talking about somebody else.

I wanted that explanation badly.

Then Kendra spoke.

I recognized her voice too.

Kendra and I had known each other since college.

She had been one of the people I could talk to without worrying about how I sounded.

I knew her laugh.

I knew the little sound she made when she thought someone was being ridiculous.

I heard that sound now.

"You really are awful, Vanessa."

There was amusement in her voice.

Not alarm.

Not anger.

Amusement.

Vanessa laughed.

She sounded pleased with herself.

"Well, I've been working on Ethan for months. I'm not giving up now."

I stopped breathing for a second.

I can still remember exactly how I was sitting.

My feet were on the carpet.

One hand was resting on the mattress.

The other had gone completely still.

I kept looking at the wall.

As though I might be able to see through it.

Someone else in the room asked Vanessa whether she actually believed Ethan would leave me for her.

I waited for the answer.

Part of me was still searching for the joke.

Something harmless.

Something that would make the conversation less ugly than it sounded.

Vanessa didn't hesitate.

"He nearly did already."

I swallowed.

She continued talking about Ethan as though he belonged to her.

She said a man like him wouldn't choose a woman like me unless he wanted an easy, dependable wife.

Someone who wouldn't challenge him.

Someone who would make his life comfortable.

Then she said she was doing him a favor by trying to stop the marriage.

I sat there while the meaning settled over me.

She hadn't merely insulted me.

She had been pursuing my fiancé.

And she had been doing it while helping me arrange our wedding.

I thought about every time she had asked whether Ethan would be joining us.

Every time she had offered to speak to him about some detail.

Every time she had made a remark that left me uncomfortable.

I had ignored those moments.

I had even felt guilty for noticing them.

Looking back, that guilt embarrasses me.

I had been so determined not to act jealous that I stopped trusting my own judgment.

Now she was in the room next door, laughing about damaging my dress.

My wedding dress.

The gown I had chosen with such care.

The one hanging behind a thin white covering a few feet from my bed.

I looked at it.

Nothing about the dress had changed.

But suddenly it seemed terribly vulnerable.

So did everything else.

The rings.

The ceremony.

The morning I had spent months imagining.

All of it was within reach of women who apparently wanted to see me humiliated.

I wanted to get up.

I wanted to open the connecting door.

I wanted Vanessa to look me in the face and explain what she had just said.

But I didn't move.

I kept listening.

Someone asked what Vanessa would do if I learned about her intentions.

She gave a short laugh.

"Olivia never catches on until everything's finished."

The others didn't object.

That hurt almost as much as Vanessa's words.

One person could betray you.

I knew that.

But hearing several women sit together and treat your pain like entertainment was something different.

I had invited every one of them into my wedding.

I had believed they were on my side.

Now I understood that at least one of them had been using her place beside me to get closer to Ethan.

And the others were letting it happen.

I lowered my head.

I thought I might cry.

My eyes burned, but the tears didn't come.

Instead, I noticed how quiet my own room was.

The bedside lamp was off.

My phone screen was dark.

The vow cards were still stacked exactly where I had left them.

Everything looked normal.

That made it worse.

On the other side of the wall, my maid of honor was still talking.

And I finally understood that the wedding I had planned could not continue in quite the way I had intended.

Not with those women holding so much of it in their hands.

I had to decide what to do.

I could confront them.

I could call Ethan.

I could spend the rest of the night begging people to tell me the truth.

But I had just heard the truth for myself.

I didn't need Vanessa to admit it.

I needed to make sure she couldn't carry out her plans.

I looked at my phone.

For the first time that night, I stopped thinking about how badly I had been hurt.

I started thinking about what those women still had access to.

And what I could do before morning.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: Every Little Comment My Maid of Honor Had Made About My Fiancé Suddenly Sounded Different After I Heard Her Laughing Next Door

I used to believe that the people closest to me would never deliberately hurt me.
