9 – Standing Outside the Harrington Mansion, I Finally Opened the Hospital Alert and Faced What My Anger Had Nearly Made Me Forget

I looked down at the phone.

The hospital notification was still on the screen.

For several seconds, I couldn't make myself touch it.

I had spent the afternoon imagining what I wanted to happen to Garrett and Evelyn.

Now I was afraid to learn what had actually happened to Chloe.

There was a difference.

A terrible one.

I could picture the Harrington mansion burning.

I could picture Garrett losing the comfortable life he took for granted.

But I couldn't bear picturing my daughter taking her last breath.

That was the truth.

I was brave enough to carry gasoline toward a mansion.

But frightened enough to hesitate before opening a message.

I hated what that said about me.

The rain had slowed.

Drops still fell from the edge of the porch.

I could hear them striking the ground.

The mansion looked almost peaceful.

Its windows were clean.

Its entrance was carefully maintained.

Nothing about the building suggested that a young pregnant woman had been beaten inside.

I looked at the phone again.

St. Jude General Hospital.

Those words were enough to make my chest tighten.

I touched the notification.

The screen showed me only the information available in the alert.

It did not tell me everything I needed to know.

I read it again.

Then once more.

I wanted a clear answer.

Something that said Chloe was safe.

Something that told me the baby had survived.

Something that promised she would wake up.

But I had no such promise.

I stood there with the same uncertainty Dr. Miller had left me with.

My daughter was critically injured.

Her brain had suffered catastrophic trauma.

Her pregnancy was in danger.

And I still didn't know what the next hours would bring.

I lowered the phone.

For a moment, I looked at the expensive front door.

I wondered whether Garrett had any idea what his wife looked like now.

Did he know about the tubes?

The bandages?

The machines?

Did he understand that Chloe might never speak to him again?

I couldn't answer those questions.

I only knew what she had told me.

Evelyn had held her by the hair.

Garrett had used a golf club.

And when Chloe told them the baby was hurting, they had dismissed the pregnancy as something that should never have happened.

Those facts were enough to make me furious.

They were not enough to make burning the mansion right.

I had learned that the hard way.

I looked toward the welcome mat.

The gasoline had changed it.

I had done that.

Nobody else.

I couldn't put the responsibility on Garrett simply because I hated him.

I couldn't blame Evelyn for the match I had held.

The choices I made were mine.

That realization felt ugly.

I wanted to be able to say that everything I had done was for Chloe.

But standing there, I knew some of it had been for me.

For my anger.

For the humiliation of being unable to protect her.

For the need to make someone else feel as frightened as I felt.

I had wanted to punish Garrett.

I had wanted Evelyn to suffer.

And I had nearly forgotten the difference between revenge and helping my daughter.

I looked down at my hands.

They were still trembling.

The soreness from breaking the hospital chair remained in my palm.

I remembered the sound of the plastic snapping.

It had startled me.

At the time, I thought it was simply the pressure of everything I was feeling.

Now it seemed like the first warning that I was losing control.

A broken chair.

A container of gasoline.

A burning match.

Each step had taken me farther from the hospital.

Farther from Chloe.

Farther from the woman I believed myself to be.

I had not wanted to become someone who hurt people.

Yet I had stood close enough to doing exactly that.

I thought about what Chloe might say if she knew.

I couldn't hear her real voice anymore.

Not in the present.

Only in memory.

I remembered how she sounded at the bus stop.

Weak.

Frightened.

Struggling to explain something no one should ever have needed to explain.

I wanted to hear her speak again.

Not to tell me about pain.

Not to tell me what Garrett had done.

I wanted to hear her ask an ordinary question.

I wanted to hear her laugh.

I wanted to hear her call me Mom without fear in her voice.

That was what I wanted most.

Not the mansion destroyed.

Not Evelyn humiliated.

Not Garrett frightened.

Chloe.

Alive.

And safe.

I took another look at the hospital alert.

It was still incomplete as an answer.

I had no new medical details I could trust.

That uncertainty frightened me more than anything.

Dr. Miller had told me to prepare for the possibility of losing her.

He had not told me she was already gone.

I needed to remember that.

He had said the damage to her brain was severe.

He had not promised recovery.

He had warned me the pregnancy might not continue.

He had not given me a certain outcome.

I had been turning possibilities into conclusions because I couldn't bear waiting.

I had imagined Chloe dying.

Then I had acted as though nothing remained except revenge.

But she had still been alive when I left the ICU.

That mattered.

I remembered her hand beneath mine.

It had been warm.

Unmoving.

But warm.

I remembered telling her I loved her.

I remembered promising not to leave.

Then I had stood up and walked away.

That was the part I couldn't forgive easily.

I had made a promise to my unconscious daughter.

And within hours, I was standing outside the home of the people who hurt her, preparing to do something terrible.

I had told myself it was loyalty.

But loyalty should have brought me back to her bedside.

I knew that now.

I looked toward my truck.

The same truck I had driven through the rain before dawn.

It had carried me to the bus stop.

Then to St. Jude General Hospital.

Then toward the Harrington estate.

Three journeys in one day.

Each one had changed what I understood about my daughter's life.

At the bus stop, I learned that she had been beaten.

At the hospital, I learned how badly she was hurt.

At the mansion, I learned how far my own anger could carry me.

I did not like that last lesson.

But I could not deny it.

The old life I had wanted for myself suddenly seemed very far away.

I had worked to leave certain things in my past.

Things Garrett had never known.

He had looked at my truck, my clothes, and my ordinary manner and decided I was someone he could dismiss.

His mother had done the same.

Neither had cared enough to ask who I had been before Chloe married into their family.

I had preferred it that way.

I didn't need their curiosity.

I didn't want to explain myself to people who treated my daughter as though she were beneath them.

But that afternoon, I had begun thinking about my past again.

I had remembered the parts of myself I had hoped never to need.

The part that could act without hesitation.

The part that did not easily back away from a threat.

I had thought those memories would make me stronger.

Instead, my anger had made me reckless.

Whatever my past contained, it did not give me permission to decide who deserved to live.

I understood that now.

I wished I had understood it before bringing the gasoline.

The rain made the air smell damp and cold.

But the sharp odor near the porch remained.

It reminded me of what I had done.

I couldn't pretend the danger had disappeared simply because I extinguished the match.

The gasoline was still there.

The decision had already been made and partly carried out.

I had stopped before starting a fire, but that did not make the earlier choices harmless.

I knew I would have to face that honestly.

I thought about Garrett.

His confidence.

His arrogance.

The ease with which he dismissed people.

I had believed for three years that he considered himself untouchable.

Maybe he still did.

Maybe he believed Chloe would never be able to tell anyone what happened.

I didn't know.

But she had told me.

She had used the last strength I had seen her possess to name the people who hurt her.

I needed to respect that.

Not by turning her suffering into my excuse for violence.

By remembering her words accurately.

I went over them again.

The silver had not been polished properly.

Evelyn had pulled her hair.

Evelyn had kept her down.

Garrett had used the golf club.

Chloe had told them about the pain in her belly.

They had dismissed the baby.

I had heard every part of it.

Even now, I could remember how she paused between phrases.

How she fought to breathe.

How tightly she held my wrist.

That was what mattered.

The truth of what happened to her.

Not the terrible scenes my anger wanted to create afterward.

I pictured the hospital room again.

The monitors.

The tubes.

The blankets.

The motionless young woman who was still my daughter.

I imagined sitting beside her.

I imagined taking her hand again.

I imagined telling her I had come back.

I wanted that more than I wanted to stand another minute outside Garrett's house.

I couldn't change what I had already done.

But I could stop pretending the mansion was where my responsibilities ended.

Chloe was still at St. Jude General Hospital.

Dr. Miller and the other medical staff were still dealing with her injuries.

The baby remained in danger.

And I remained her mother.

That role was not finished simply because I felt powerless.

I had been thinking about the Harrington family's influence as though it were the only force that mattered.

Money.

Connections.

The ability to make people listen.

But Chloe was not a financial problem to be solved.

She was a person whose life had been violently interrupted.

I had allowed Garrett's wealth to intimidate me for too long.

Then I had allowed my hatred of that wealth to blind me.

Both mistakes had kept my attention on him.

He had already taken enough from my daughter.

I did not want him to take the rest of my judgment too.

I looked back at the house.

I could not see Garrett.

I could not see Evelyn.

I did not know what they were thinking.

I did not know whether they felt guilty.

I did not know whether either one cared about Chloe.

The truth was that I could no longer bear making them the center of every thought.

I had a daughter in intensive care.

That was enough.

I looked at my phone again.

The notification was still there.

It represented something I could not control.

A change at the hospital.

A message about Chloe's care.

A reason to turn my attention back to the place where I should have remained.

I had wanted certainty.

Instead, I had only questions.

Was she still alive?

Had her condition changed?

Was the baby still surviving?

Would she ever wake up?

There were no answers I could safely invent.

There was only the need to find out.

I held the phone against my palm.

My fingers were cold.

I remembered Chloe's cold fingers wrapped around my wrist.

That memory made the decision for me.

Not my anger.

Not my past.

Not the Harrington name.

My daughter.

I turned away from the mansion.

The front porch remained behind me.

The expensive rooms remained behind those walls.

Garrett and Evelyn remained responsible, in my mind, for the terrible injuries Chloe had described.

Nothing about my decision to stop changed that.

But I finally understood that I could not make their punishment more important than her survival.

I wanted to be with Chloe.

I wanted to know what the hospital was trying to tell me.

And whatever happened afterward, I wanted to face it without becoming the kind of person who believed suffering gave them the right to destroy somebody else.

I had almost crossed that line.

I could not undo the afternoon.

But I could refuse to cross it again.

<a
