7 – The Doctor’s Warning About Chloe’s Brain Injury Stayed With Me as I Faced the Truth About What I Almost Did

I kept returning to one number.

Three.

Dr. Miller had said it so carefully.

A Glasgow Coma Scale score of three.

The lowest possible score.

At the time, I had wanted him to explain it again.

Not because I hadn't understood the words.

Because I couldn't accept that they described Chloe.

My daughter had been talking to me that morning.

She had been frightened.

Injured.

Barely able to whisper.

But she had recognized me.

She had held my wrist.

She had looked directly into my face.

Now I knew she was unconscious.

And the doctor had warned me that she might never return to the person she had been.

I could not stop thinking about the distance between those two moments.

At the bus stop, Chloe had tried to tell me what happened.

In the hospital, she could no longer say anything.

I had spent an hour waiting for her fingers to move.

I had watched the monitors as though I could make the numbers improve by staring at them.

Nothing I did changed her condition.

That helplessness had been unbearable.

I understood now that I had wanted somewhere to put it.

Somewhere to send all the fear and grief.

And the Harrington mansion had seemed like the obvious place.

It belonged to the people who had hurt her.

It was everything they valued.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

Protected.

I had wanted to make them feel as unsafe as Chloe had felt.

That was the truth.

I could call it anger.

I could call it grief.

I could say I had been desperate.

All of those things were real.

But they did not erase what I had intended.

I had carried gasoline to their home.

I had stood near their front porch.

I had held a burning match.

I had been ready to turn my daughter's suffering into another act of destruction.

I could not excuse that by saying Garrett was cruel.

His cruelty was the reason I had gone there.

It was not a reason to endanger everyone around him.

I thought about the hospital chair again.

The broken armrest.

It seemed like a small detail compared with everything else.

But it marked the moment I stopped controlling myself.

I had gripped the plastic so hard that it cracked.

Then I stood up and walked away.

I had not asked myself whether I was thinking clearly.

I had not considered what Chloe would want.

I had simply decided that I could no longer wait.

Looking back, that was where I began making things worse.

I had confused movement with progress.

Doing something felt better than sitting helplessly beside her.

But a person can move in the wrong direction.

I had proved that.

The thought made me ashamed.

I had always wanted Chloe to know she could rely on me.

When she was little, I wanted to be the person she came to when she was frightened.

When she grew older, I tried to give her space without making her feel abandoned.

When she married Garrett, I told myself that respecting her marriage meant stepping aside.

I thought I was behaving like a good mother.

Now I wasn't certain.

I had allowed too much distance to grow between us.

Not because I stopped loving her.

I loved her more than anything.

But I had let the Harringtons make their world seem separate from mine.

They had money.

Influence.

A name that people recognized.

I had told myself I couldn't interfere.

That was a mistake.

My daughter's safety had never been something I should have treated as outside my concern.

I couldn't know every private detail of her marriage.

But I could have asked harder questions.

I could have listened more carefully.

I could have stopped accepting Garrett's arrogance as something Chloe simply had to manage.

I could have challenged Evelyn's treatment of her.

Perhaps none of those things would have prevented the attack.

I knew that.

The responsibility for the violence belonged to the people who committed it.

But I still wished I had done more.

That feeling would not leave me.

I thought of Chloe's age.

Twenty-four.

She was old enough to make her own decisions.

Old enough to marry.

Old enough to become a mother.

But she was still my daughter.

There is no age when a mother stops wanting to protect her child.

I had been at the bus stop when Chloe needed me.

But only after somebody else found her.

That fact hurt.

The police had discovered her at five in the morning.

Without them, I might not have known where she was.

I thought about how isolated the bus stop had been.

How dark the road looked.

How cold the rain felt.

I remembered her nightgown clinging to her body.

I remembered seeing blood near her mouth.

I remembered wondering whether I could touch her without hurting her more.

No mother should have to make that decision.

No pregnant woman should have to lie outside wondering whether somebody will find her.

And no husband should ever be the reason she is there.

I thought about Garrett.

I had disliked him from the beginning.

Not every moment.

Not every word.

But there had always been something about him that made me uneasy.

He was accustomed to people yielding.

He had never seemed interested in understanding someone who disagreed with him.

He treated wealth as though it made his opinions more important.

Evelyn encouraged that attitude.

She carried herself like a person whose family name settled every argument.

I wondered whether Garrett had grown up believing he could do anything without consequences.

I couldn't know that.

I could only judge what Chloe had told me.

He had used a golf club against his pregnant wife.

That was enough.

I did not need to invent reasons for him.

I did not need to understand how he justified it.

I needed the truth of what happened to remain clear.

Evelyn had held Chloe down.

Garrett had struck her.

Chloe had told them the baby was hurting.

They had dismissed the pregnancy as a mistake.

Those were the facts Chloe had managed to give me.

I kept repeating them because I was afraid of forgetting something.

I was afraid the details would become confused with everything I had imagined afterward.

I didn't want that.

I wanted to remember her words.

Even the ones that hurt.

Especially those.

I remembered how she looked when she mentioned the silver.

She had seemed embarrassed.

As though she was describing a mistake that justified punishment.

I wanted to reach backward into that moment.

I wanted to tell her she didn't need to apologize.

I had told her at the bus stop that she hadn't done anything wrong.

But I didn't know whether she had heard me clearly.

I wanted another chance.

I wanted her awake so I could say it again.

I wanted her to believe me.

The hospital notification remained in my thoughts.

I could still remember the shock of seeing it while I stood near the Harrington entrance.

Until then, the afternoon had narrowed around one purpose.

I had stopped thinking about the rest of the world.

I had stopped considering what might happen next.

Then my phone vibrated.

A small ordinary sound.

Something that happened countless times every day.

But it changed where I was looking.

I looked away from the front door.

Away from the gasoline.

Away from the match.

I looked toward the hospital.

And for the first time, I understood the difference between being angry about Chloe and being present for Chloe.

I had gone to the mansion because I wanted to hurt the people who hurt her.

But she needed me to remain her mother.

Not somebody consumed by revenge.

Not somebody who might end up unable to stand beside her bed.

She needed someone who could listen when the doctors spoke.

Someone who could remember what she had said.

Someone who could keep her life from becoming only a story about Garrett's cruelty.

I could not make myself more useful by destroying his home.

I could only make another terrible thing happen.

I understood that before I knew exactly what the hospital wanted to tell me.

That mattered.

I did not need good news to know the match had to go out.

I did not need a promise that Chloe would recover.

I did not need Garrett to apologize.

I needed to stop.

I thought about the past the Harringtons knew nothing about.

I had once believed keeping that part of myself separate from my daughter's marriage was enough.

I hadn't wanted old experiences to shape the peaceful life I hoped Chloe would have.

Garrett had never asked about me.

Evelyn had never shown any curiosity beyond what she could judge from appearances.

They had underestimated me.

But I began to understand that proving them wrong was not the most important thing.

Keeping Chloe alive mattered more.

Keeping myself from making her situation worse mattered more.

The mansion could remain standing and still be a place where something terrible had happened.

Its polished rooms could continue looking beautiful without making Garrett innocent.

Its silver could shine without changing what Evelyn had done.

Their wealth could not turn my daughter's injuries into something imaginary.

I knew what I had seen.

I knew what she had told me.

And I knew what Dr. Miller had explained.

I didn't need flames to make those things real.

I needed to hold on to them.

I needed to remember that my daughter's life was not a contest between the Harrington family and me.

It was a life.

One that might end.

One that might survive with terrible damage.

One that had already been changed by violence.

I thought about the baby again.

Five months.

So much future had been placed in danger.

I couldn't stand the thought of losing my grandchild before ever meeting them.

But I also couldn't bear imagining Chloe waking to learn that her mother had done something violent in her name.

I didn't know whether she would wake.

I didn't know whether the pregnancy would continue.

I didn't know what the alert meant.

Those uncertainties remained.

But there was one thing I did know.

I had come close to making a permanent decision while I was unable to think beyond my pain.

I had stopped before the fire began.

That did not erase what I had intended.

It did not make me proud.

It simply meant I still had the chance to choose differently.

And with Chloe's condition still uncertain, that chance was something I could not afford to waste.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: With My Daughter Still Fighting for Her Life, I Turned
