5 – The Hospital Alert Reached Me Outside the Harrington Mansion, and I Finally Understood How Far My Anger Had Taken Me

I had never been so frightened of a phone notification.

Not even when the police called me that morning.

Back then, I hadn't known what was waiting for me.

Now I did.

My daughter was unconscious in a hospital bed, and the doctors had warned me she might never wake up.

I stood outside the Harrington mansion with a burning match in one hand.

My phone was vibrating in the other.

The screen showed an alert from St. Jude General Hospital.

I stared at it.

For a moment, I couldn't make myself move.

I had spent the afternoon thinking about Garrett and Evelyn.

About the silverware.

About the golf club.

About the way Chloe had looked when I found her.

Now all I could think about was the hospital.

I was afraid the message would tell me my daughter was dead.

I was afraid it would tell me the baby was gone.

I was afraid of every possibility.

The flame moved closer to my fingers.

I looked down.

Then I saw the gasoline-soaked welcome mat.

I remembered where I was.

I remembered what I had come there to do.

The expensive front porch was only a few feet away.

The house stood silent behind it.

I had imagined Garrett inside, protected by his money and comfortable surroundings.

I had imagined Evelyn sitting somewhere with her polished silver.

Those thoughts had brought me there.

But the notification had pulled my attention back to Chloe.

I hadn't even opened it yet.

I only knew the hospital was trying to tell me something.

And I was standing miles away from my daughter, holding something that could destroy another life.

I extinguished the match.

My hand was shaking so badly that I almost dropped my phone.

I stepped away from the entrance.

The fumes were still strong.

I could smell them on my clothes.

I looked toward the front door.

For hours, I had convinced myself that damaging that house would somehow make Garrett and Evelyn understand what they had done.

Standing there, I could no longer pretend that burning a building would help Chloe breathe.

It would not repair her skull.

It would not heal her ruptured spleen.

It would not protect the baby.

It would only mean that while my daughter fought for her life, I had chosen to do something that might destroy mine as well.

I looked at the screen again.

The alert was still there.

I read what I could see.

It was connected to Chloe's care.

I couldn't tell from the notification alone what had changed.

That uncertainty nearly brought me to my knees.

I wanted answers.

I wanted Dr. Miller.

I wanted the sound of my daughter's voice.

Instead, I was standing outside the home of the people who had hurt her.

I had never felt so far from where I needed to be.

I moved away from the porch.

My legs felt unsteady.

I could still see the welcome mat.

It had looked expensive when I arrived.

Now it looked like evidence of how close I had come to becoming someone I did not recognize.

I thought about the hospital chair.

The broken plastic armrest.

I had cracked it because I couldn't contain my anger.

That should have frightened me.

It should have made me stop and ask what I was capable of doing next.

But I had mistaken the force of my feelings for certainty.

I had believed that because I was furious, I knew what needed to happen.

I didn't.

I knew Chloe had been harmed.

I knew Garrett and Evelyn were responsible according to what she had told me.

I knew she was fighting for her life.

Those facts were real.

But the belief that I could make her suffering right by setting their home on fire was something I had created out of desperation.

I stood in the rain and tried to breathe.

The afternoon had grown colder.

Water had soaked through my sleeves.

I could feel it against my skin.

I remembered Chloe at the bus stop.

Her thin nightgown had offered almost no protection against the weather.

She had been lying there for long enough that her fingers were cold when she touched me.

I looked at my own hands.

There was no blood on them.

But I had come dangerously close to making a decision that could have left blood there.

I knew that.

And knowing it did not lessen my anger toward the Harringtons.

It only made me understand that my anger could not be trusted to make every decision.

I wanted Garrett held responsible.

I wanted Evelyn to answer for restraining my daughter.

I wanted the truth about that night spoken aloud.

But none of those things would happen because I had destroyed their porch.

I had spent three years believing I could keep the peace by remaining quiet.

Now I had nearly gone to the opposite extreme.

I had gone from swallowing my objections to considering an act of violence.

Neither had protected Chloe.

I looked toward the mansion one last time.

I thought about Garrett's expression when he spoke to people he considered beneath him.

I thought about Evelyn's careful voice.

I remembered the way she valued appearances.

I could almost imagine what they would say if they knew I had been standing there.

They would call me unstable.

They would call me dangerous.

They would use every mistake I made to distract attention from what they had done to Chloe.

And that afternoon, I had nearly handed them the perfect excuse.

I could not deny it.

I had come carrying gasoline.

I had brought a match.

I had intended to frighten them in the worst possible way.

I did not want to excuse myself.

I wanted to understand why I had reached that point.

The answer was lying in a hospital bed.

But loving Chloe did not make every action I took in her name right.

I had to face that.

I moved farther from the house.

I was no longer watching the front door.

I was looking at my phone.

The alert had interrupted something terrible.

It had not told me whether Chloe would live.

It had not promised anything about the baby.

It had only reminded me that the story was still happening somewhere else.

In a hospital room.

Under bright lights.

Beside machines I had watched for an hour without understanding.

I pictured the monitor again.

Numbers changing.

Quiet sounds repeating.

My daughter's hand resting beneath mine.

She had not moved when I said I loved her.

She had not answered when I promised to stay.

I remembered making that promise.

Then I remembered walking away.

That was the part that hurt.

I had left her.

Not because the doctors told me to go.

Not because she was safe.

I had left because I wanted Garrett and Evelyn to suffer.

I had allowed those two people to occupy my mind so completely that I had walked away from the person who needed me.

I knew I couldn't undo what had happened that afternoon.

The gasoline was real.

The match was real.

The danger was real.

But I could stop making it worse.

I could refuse to take the next step.

I could put my attention back where it belonged.

I stood still until the trembling in my hands eased enough to hold the phone properly.

I was not relieved.

Relief would have meant something good had happened.

Nothing good had happened yet.

Chloe was still critically injured.

The baby was still in danger.

The people responsible had not answered for anything.

And I had almost committed an act that could have killed someone.

I looked at the hospital notification again.

I thought about Dr. Miller's face when he told me Chloe's neurological score.

Three.

The lowest possible number.

I had repeated it because I couldn't understand it.

Now I understood something else.

There were consequences no amount of anger could reverse.

Garrett had already demonstrated that.

He had used violence against my daughter.

Evelyn had helped him.

And the damage they caused could not be undone simply because someone later regretted it.

I did not want to become another person who acted first and then expected everyone else to live with the consequences.

I thought about Chloe as a child.

She used to look at me when something frightened her.

She would wait for me to tell her what to do.

I had not always known the right answer.

But I had tried to make decisions that kept her safe.

Somewhere between the bus stop and the mansion, I had forgotten that.

I had begun thinking about punishment instead of protection.

I had begun imagining destruction instead of survival.

And I had nearly crossed a line that would have changed everything.

I could still feel the match between my fingers.

The memory of it would remain with me.

So would the smell of gasoline.

I knew those details would return whenever I remembered that afternoon.

The same way Chloe's cold hand would return.

The same way the silverware would return.

The same way Dr. Miller's words would return.

I could not erase any of them.

I could only decide what to do after them.

The hospital alert was still unanswered in any meaningful way.

I needed to know what had happened.

Not what I feared.

Not what I imagined.

What had actually happened to my daughter.

I turned my attention away from the Harrington mansion.

For the first time since leaving the ICU, the house no longer felt like the center of everything.

Chloe did.

She always should have.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Kept Hearing My
