2 – At the Hospital, a Doctor Told Me What My Daughter’s Husband Had Done to Her Body and What It Might Cost

I reached St. Jude General Hospital with Chloe's voice still in my head.

The silver.

Her hair.

The golf club.

I could hear those three things every time I tried to think about anything else.

I parked my truck and hurried inside.

My clothes were still damp.

Water had collected inside my shoes.

The hospital was warm, but I couldn't stop shaking.

I went straight to the place where they could tell me about Chloe.

I gave her name.

Then I gave mine.

Samantha.

Her mother.

Those two words suddenly felt useless.

I had been her mother for twenty-four years, and I couldn't do a single thing about what was happening to her behind those doors.

I wanted somebody to tell me she was awake.

I wanted to hear that the bruises looked worse than they were.

I wanted an ordinary explanation.

A painful one, perhaps.

Something that could be treated.

Something she could come home from.

Instead, I learned that doctors were fighting to keep her alive.

I sat down.

Then I stood up again.

I couldn't bear the chair.

I walked a few steps and turned around.

The floor was clean enough to reflect the overhead lights.

Everything smelled like disinfectant.

I kept thinking about the smell of rain on Chloe's hair.

I had been close enough to notice it when I leaned toward her.

That thought returned again and again.

Her hair.

Evelyn holding it.

I tried not to imagine the rest.

It didn't work.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Chloe on the concrete.

I had heard the fear in her voice.

I knew she had been trying to tell me everything before she lost the strength to speak.

She had not asked about Garrett.

She had not asked whether he was coming.

She had not asked for his mother.

She had held my wrist and tried to explain why they had hurt her.

Because of silverware.

I put my hands over my face.

I couldn't understand how a person could be so cruel about something so unimportant.

Then I realized the silver was never the real issue.

It was what those people believed they had the right to do to Chloe.

She lived in their home.

She carried their family name.

She was pregnant with Garrett's child.

And somehow they had convinced themselves that her body belonged to them too.

I remembered how Evelyn spoke to her.

Always correcting.

Always making some small remark.

Always acting as though Chloe should be grateful just to be included.

I had disliked it.

I had told myself it was a difference in personality.

That phrase embarrassed me now.

A difference in personality.

What a comfortable explanation for behavior that had always been ugly.

Garrett was no better.

He expected people to listen when he spoke.

He made decisions as though nobody else had a right to question them.

When Chloe married him, I had hoped love would make him gentler.

I had been foolish enough to think that knowing my daughter would change the way he treated people.

Chloe was kind.

She tried to understand everyone.

She would apologize first just to end an argument.

I had seen her do it since childhood.

I used to tell her she didn't always have to make peace.

Then I would watch her try anyway.

But kindness wasn't protection.

Not in that house.

I looked at the clock.

Time moved slowly.

I was told that Chloe's injuries were serious.

Then I was left to wait.

There was nothing I could do but sit in that bright hallway and listen for somebody to say her name.

The police had seen her condition.

They knew where she had been found.

They knew the time.

But I kept thinking about Garrett.

I wondered whether he knew Chloe had survived long enough to speak.

I wondered whether Evelyn was concerned that somebody might have seen what happened.

I wondered whether they were already telling each other how to explain it.

The idea made my hands curl into fists.

I had spent years hearing how respected the Harrington family was.

They had influence.

Connections.

People who listened to them.

They were accustomed to getting what they wanted.

I was not foolish about that.

I understood that wealth could make difficult things disappear from public view.

It could pay for silence.

It could make an ugly truth seem uncertain.

It could give cruel people an audience willing to believe them.

I didn't know yet what they would try to do.

But I knew they would not want Chloe's account of that night repeated.

And I knew she might not be able to repeat it herself.

That frightened me almost as much as her injuries.

I had heard her speak.

I had heard Garrett's name.

I had heard Evelyn's name.

I had heard about the golf club and the silver.

But Chloe was the one who had lived through it.

What would happen if she couldn't tell anyone again?

I stood near the wall and stared at my hands.

A little earlier, one of those hands had been wrapped around hers.

She had been cold.

I couldn't forget that.

The hospital lights made everything look pale.

I felt as though the morning had lasted for days.

I wanted to call the Harrington house.

I wanted to demand to know where Garrett was.

I wanted to ask Evelyn whether her silverware was finally clean enough.

But I didn't.

There were questions I needed answered before I could think about them.

Was Chloe still alive?

Was her baby still alive?

Would I ever hear her voice again?

Nothing else mattered until I knew.

Three hours passed before Dr. Miller came to speak with me.

I knew who he was looking for.

He looked exhausted.

He had the expression of a man who wished he could say something kinder than the truth.

I walked toward him.

"How is my daughter?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That frightened me.

"Please."

He brought me away from the doorway so we could speak.

I kept watching his face.

There was no relief in it.

No good news he was struggling to explain.

He told me Chloe had suffered extremely serious injuries.

Her head had taken severe trauma.

Her spleen had ruptured.

I knew what a spleen was.

I knew enough to understand that a ruptured organ was dangerous.

But I couldn't take in the full meaning of those words.

I only understood that something inside my daughter had been torn apart.

"Can she wake up?"

Dr. Miller took a moment before answering.

"She's in a deep coma."

I looked at him.

"How deep?"

He explained that the team had assessed her neurological condition using a scale.

The Glasgow Coma Scale.

Her score was three.

He told me that was the lowest possible score.

I repeated the number because I couldn't think what else to say.

"Three?"

He nodded.

I stared at the wall behind him.

The number was so small.

It seemed impossible that it could describe something so terrible.

Chloe had been talking to me beside the bus stop.

Not easily.

Not clearly.

But she had known I was there.

She had held my wrist.

She had told me what happened.

Now a doctor was telling me that she was in a coma so deep that the lowest number on his scale applied to her.

I asked whether they could help her brain recover.

He explained that the damage was catastrophic.

He did not promise that she would return to the person she had been.

In fact, he warned me that even if she survived, the injuries could change her life completely.

I felt myself shaking my head.

Not because I hadn't heard him.

Because I didn't want those words to belong to my daughter.

I knew Chloe.

I knew the sound of her laugh.

I knew how she looked when she was trying not to cry.

I knew the way she reached for my hand when she wanted to tell me something difficult.

The idea that I might never see those things again was more than I could understand.

"What about her baby?"

He looked down briefly.

That was enough to make my stomach tighten.

He told me the pregnancy was in danger too.

Chloe's body had suffered enormous trauma.

At five months pregnant, she was already carrying a life that depended entirely on her survival.

He explained that her condition might make it impossible for her body to continue the pregnancy.

I put my hand against the wall.

I had been trying so hard to remain standing.

"Are you saying I'll lose them both?"

His face changed.

He didn't tell me that I would.

He didn't tell me that I wouldn't.

He said the situation was extremely serious and that I needed to understand how uncertain the outcome was.

Then he said I should prepare myself for the possibility of losing Chloe.

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to tell him he didn't know how strong she was.

I wanted to say she had survived enough already.

But he was looking at me with such terrible care.

He wasn't trying to frighten me.

He was trying not to lie.

I asked whether I could see her.

He said I could go into the intensive care unit.

I thanked him.

That was the word that came out.

Thank you.

I had just been told my daughter might die, and I thanked the man who told me.

I walked toward the ICU.

My legs felt distant.

I kept repeating what Dr. Miller had said.

A deep coma.

A score of three.

Severe damage to her brain.

A pregnancy that might not survive.

I thought about Garrett holding a golf club.

I thought about Evelyn gripping Chloe's hair.

For the first time, I stopped wondering whether their cruelty had gone too far by accident.

My daughter had begged them to stop because of the baby.

They had answered by saying the baby was unwanted.

Then they had left her outside.

Those were not the actions of people who cared whether she lived.

I stood outside the ICU for a moment before going in.

I could hear machines beyond the doorway.

I had been afraid of seeing Chloe again.

Afraid of what the doctors had needed to do to keep her alive.

Afraid of finding her changed beyond recognition.

But I opened the door.

She was my daughter.

Whatever happened next, I would not leave her alone.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: I Sat Beside My Unconscious Daughter and Realized the People Who Hurt Her
