6 – The More I Questioned Daniel About Our Marriage, the More I Realized My Sacrifices Had Become Convenient Rather Than Meaningful to Him

I did not move away from the table.

Daniel was still standing beside Sophia.

His parents were still sitting across the room.

Nothing had changed.

And yet I no longer felt quite the same as I had when I first entered the house.

I was still shocked.

Still hurt.

Still struggling to believe what I had heard.

But beneath all of that, I had begun to feel angry.

For three years, I had treated Daniel's problems as our responsibility.

Now he was treating the end of our marriage as something he could decide alone.

I had not been consulted.

I had not even been warned.

He had waited until I came home from work and then told me what he expected.

I looked at his face.

"Did you ever plan to talk to me before making this decision?"

He shifted his weight.

He told me there had been nothing left to discuss.

That answer hurt more than I expected.

Nothing left.

I thought about how many conversations we had never finished because Daniel was distracted.

How often I had stopped talking because his phone rang.

How many times he had promised we would have time for each other when the financial pressure ended.

He had been postponing those conversations.

I had believed him.

And now he was telling me there was nothing to discuss.

I wanted to remind him of every promise.

But I knew he remembered them.

He had said them.

He had looked at me across the kitchen table and asked me to keep going.

He had assured me that our lives would improve.

I wondered whether he had believed those promises when he made them.

Perhaps he had.

Perhaps things had changed afterward.

I could accept that people changed.

What I could not understand was why he continued accepting my help without telling me his feelings had changed.

I thought about the additional consulting assignments.

There had been evenings when I could barely concentrate.

I remembered sitting in front of my computer with my shoulders aching.

I remembered telling myself that one more hour would make a difference.

And it had.

Every payment reduced the debt.

Every assignment brought us closer to the day when Daniel's company would no longer carry that enormous obligation.

I had believed I was helping both of us.

Now I wondered what Daniel had been thinking when he watched me work.

Had he felt grateful?

Had he felt guilty?

Or had he simply been relieved that I was handling the problem?

I looked at him.

"You knew how hard I was working."

He did not disagree.

"You saw it."

He remained quiet.

"I did all of that because I thought we were trying to build something together."

The words came out slowly.

I did not want to cry.

I was afraid that if I cried, Daniel would turn my pain into another reason to end the conversation.

I wanted him to listen.

I wanted him to acknowledge what had happened.

He said the work I had done had helped.

Helped.

I repeated the word to myself.

It was so small.

I had sold my parents' apartment.

I had given three years of my life to paying the debt.

And he was describing it as help.

I knew he was not required to stay married to me simply because I had supported him financially.

Love was not a debt that could be collected.

I understood that.

But I had believed that the sacrifices were part of a shared agreement about our future.

He had kept allowing me to believe it.

That was what I could not forgive.

I looked toward Richard.

He was Daniel's father.

I had known him long enough to hope he might say something.

Even one sentence would have mattered.

Something about how difficult the situation was.

Something acknowledging that I had done a great deal for his son.

But he avoided my eyes.

I turned toward Margaret.

She was watching me.

I could not tell whether she felt sympathy.

Her expression gave me nothing I could use.

I thought about how often I had tried to be a good daughter-in-law.

I had always wanted Daniel's family to feel comfortable around me.

I had listened when they spoke.

I had been polite even when I was tired.

Now I was standing in front of them with my marriage falling apart.

And neither of them seemed willing to become involved.

Perhaps they thought it was not their place.

Perhaps they had already agreed with Daniel.

I did not know.

I only knew that their silence made me feel terribly alone.

Sophia was still sitting on the couch.

I could not understand how she remained so calm.

I thought about what it would be like to sit in another woman's home while her husband told her to leave.

I could not imagine doing it.

Maybe Sophia believed whatever Daniel had told her.

Maybe she thought I already knew.

But she had watched my reaction.

She had seen my face when Daniel introduced her.

She now knew that I had not been prepared.

And still she stayed beside him.

I looked at Daniel again.

"Why did you let me keep believing everything would be better once the debt was gone?"

He frowned.

I could see he disliked the question.

But I needed him to understand.

I was not asking why his feelings had changed.

I was asking why he had kept making promises while he knew I was working toward something he no longer wanted.

He had watched me give up things that mattered.

He had watched me exhaust myself.

He had accepted the money.

And now, with the debt cleared, he was telling me to go.

The timing was impossible to ignore.

I remembered the first time he had promised we would enjoy life after the loan was paid.

He had been sitting at the kitchen table.

I had been worried about another assignment I was considering.

I told him I did not think I could keep working so many hours.

He had rubbed his forehead.

He asked me to be patient.

Just a little more time.

I had agreed.

Then I agreed again.

And again.

There always seemed to be one more payment.

One more financial problem.

One more reason for me to wait.

I never imagined that by the time I finished waiting, he would no longer want me.

I felt tears gathering in my eyes.

I looked down.

I could see the floor near my shoes.

The same floor I had crossed hundreds of times while carrying work bags, groceries, and paperwork.

I had never questioned whether I belonged there.

Now I was being told to leave.

I thought about the apartment.

For years, I had known there was one property that belonged to me.

It was something my parents had left behind.

Something that existed separately from Daniel's business.

I had given it up because I thought our marriage was more important.

I had believed our home together would remain my home.

Now I was facing the possibility of losing that too.

The thought frightened me.

I was not ready to decide what to do.

I did not know where I would go.

I did not even know whether Daniel understood what he was asking.

He was speaking as though leaving the house would be a simple matter.

As though I could gather my things and disappear.

As though our years together could be packed away without another conversation.

I looked at him.

"Do you understand what you're asking me to give up?"

He did not respond the way I hoped.

He continued speaking about his decision.

His plans.

His belief that things needed to change.

I kept waiting for him to say something about us.

About what we had been.

About what I had done.

But his answers stayed focused on what he wanted now.

I began to notice how often he used himself as the center of every sentence.

His decision.

His future.

His wishes.

There was no room for the woman who had spent years supporting him.

I had not understood how completely our ideas about marriage had separated.

To me, the loan had been a shared burden.

To Daniel, perhaps it had only been a problem he needed solved.

I hated that possibility.

I wanted to believe there had been genuine love underneath the exhaustion.

I wanted to believe our marriage had meant something even if it was ending.

But I could not find that meaning in the way he was treating me.

I remembered waking that morning and looking at his face while he slept.

I had felt tenderness.

I had been happy that he would finally be able to relax.

At the time, I believed his relief would become my relief.

We would celebrate together.

That morning now seemed far away.

I could not imagine going back into the kitchen and speaking to him as though nothing had happened.

I could not imagine sitting at our table while he checked his phone.

I could not imagine hearing him ask me to be patient again.

I had already given him three years of patience.

And I had learned what he was doing with that time.

I wiped my face.

I did not want Margaret or Richard to watch me cry.

But perhaps that no longer mattered.

They had already watched Daniel humiliate me.

They had seen him introduce Sophia.

They knew I had brought champagne to celebrate the end of the loan.

And nobody had tried to stop him.

I looked at the bottle again.

I almost wanted to take it back to the shop.

The idea was absurd.

No purchase could undo what had happened.

No refund could return the apartment.

No bank could return the years I had spent working.

The only thing I could still decide was how I would respond.

I did not feel strong.

I was frightened.

My hands were shaking.

But I knew that continuing to ask Daniel to recognize my sacrifices would not make him value them.

He already knew what I had done.

And he had made his decision anyway.

I straightened slightly.

For the first time that evening, I stopped trying to persuade him that our marriage deserved saving.

I wanted to know what was actually happening.

I wanted to understand what he expected of me.

And I wanted to hear him say it without hiding behind his parents or Sophia.

I looked straight at him.

"Then tell me exactly what you've decided."

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: While
