We don't owe anything on that loan anymore."

For a moment, he stood there without moving.

Then he gave a small nod.

"That's good."

I thought he might have missed what I meant.

I turned the phone slightly toward him again.

"The entire amount. It's all been paid."

"I saw it."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

He reached for a cup and poured himself some coffee.

I watched him do it.

Part of me expected him to stop halfway through and suddenly understand.

I thought he might laugh.

I thought he might put his arms around me.

I had imagined this moment so often that I almost knew where he was supposed to stand.

But he stayed on the other side of the counter.

And I stayed where I was.

For three years, I had measured our lives by the balance of that loan.

I had worked through evenings when I could barely keep my eyes open.

I had sold the apartment my parents left me.

I had put aside nearly everything I wanted.

Now the debt was gone.

And my husband was drinking coffee.

I felt embarrassed by my own excitement.

That surprised me.

I had done something important for our family.

I should have been proud.

Instead, I was wondering whether I had made too much of it.

Daniel took another sip.

He looked distracted.

I told myself that he was tired.

He had spent years dealing with business problems, after all.

Maybe the news had not settled in yet.

Maybe he needed a little time before he could feel relieved.

I looked down at the message.

The words were still there.

The balance was cleared.

Nothing about the bank confirmation had changed.

Only the feeling in the kitchen had changed.

I wanted to ask why he was not happier.

But I was afraid that asking would turn a good morning into an argument.

I knew how that could happen.

Daniel would tell me he appreciated what I had done.

I would say that I wanted him to show it.

He would explain that he had too much on his mind.

And I would feel guilty for bringing it up.

I had lived through enough conversations like that to imagine the entire thing before it started.

So I said nothing.

I moved around the counter.

I kissed his cheek.

He did not pull away.

But he did not turn toward me either.

I gathered my things for work.

Before leaving, I looked at him one more time.

He was still standing near his coffee.

I wanted him to call me back.

I wanted him to say something that would make the morning feel the way I had expected.

He did not.

And I left for the office carrying a strange mixture of relief and disappointment.

During the drive, I tried to concentrate on the good news.

The loan was finished.

That was what mattered.

Daniel's reaction could not take that away.

I had spent too much time worrying about money to allow one awkward conversation to spoil the day.

I reminded myself that people handled stress differently.

Some people celebrated.

Some people needed time.

Perhaps Daniel was simply one of those people.

That explanation made me feel better.

It was easier to accept than the possibility that my husband no longer cared about sharing important moments with me.

By the time I arrived at work, I had almost convinced myself everything was fine.

I sat at my desk and opened my email.

There were messages from clients.

There was a report that needed finishing.

There were questions waiting for answers.

The usual things.

But for the first time in a very long while, I did not feel trapped by them.

I completed the report earlier than expected.

I answered several emails without stopping.

I even found myself smiling while looking through documents that normally made me tired.

The difference was not the work itself.

It was knowing that the money I earned no longer had to disappear into the same debt.

I could finally keep something for myself.

That thought felt unfamiliar.

For years, every extra payment had seemed more important than anything I wanted.

I was used to calculating costs before making even small decisions.

If I bought something unnecessary, I would immediately wonder whether that money should have gone toward the loan instead.

I had become so accustomed to denying myself things that I rarely even considered them anymore.

Near midday, a client asked whether I could take on another assignment.

I almost agreed.

The answer was already forming in my mouth.

Then I remembered the bank message.

I did not need to accept every opportunity simply because it paid.

I could decide how much work I wanted.

I could go home at a reasonable hour.

I could spend a weekend doing nothing at all.

I told the client I would need to consider my schedule.

It was such a small response.

But afterward, I sat back in my chair and smiled.

I had forgotten what it felt like to make a decision without immediately thinking about Daniel's business.

That realization stayed with me.

I started imagining what our life might look like now.

Not an entirely different life.

I did not expect expensive vacations or a beautiful new house.

I wanted simple things.

An evening when Daniel and I could eat dinner without discussing payments.

A weekend when I could leave my laptop closed.

A morning when I did not wake up already tired.

And perhaps, eventually, a place of my own again.

I thought about my parents' apartment.

I had tried not to dwell on it since the sale.

There was nothing useful in remembering something I could not recover.

But now that the debt was gone, I let myself think about what I had lost.

I remembered the room where my father used to read.

I remembered the familiar way my mother moved around the kitchen.

I remembered how comfortable that small apartment had felt when both of them were alive.

I could never buy back those exact afternoons.

I understood that.

Still, the idea of having another apartment someday gave me something to look forward to.

It would not replace my parents.

But it might help me feel that I had rebuilt one of the things I surrendered.

I wondered whether Daniel would understand why that mattered.

I thought he would.

I believed he knew how difficult selling the apartment had been.

He had seen me make the decision.

He had known what the property represented.

Surely he understood.

I kept returning to that word.

Surely.

Looking back, I used it whenever I wanted to believe something I had never actually confirmed.

Surely Daniel appreciated me.

Surely we were still working toward the same future.

Surely he wanted our marriage to be happy again.

I had never imagined that he might be looking at the end of the debt as an opportunity for something entirely different.

At lunchtime, I left the office.

There was a shop nearby.

I had passed it many times without stopping to buy anything special.

That afternoon, I went inside.

I wanted champagne.

Not because we were people who opened expensive bottles every time something good happened.

We were not.

That was exactly why I wanted one.

I wanted to mark the day.

I wanted to place the bottle on our kitchen table and have Daniel understand that we had reached something important.

I looked at the choices longer than necessary.

Even then, I was thinking about the price.

I picked up a bottle.

I looked at the amount.

My first instinct was to put it back.

There was no reason to spend that much on a drink.

We had lived without unnecessary purchases for years.

Another evening without champagne would not hurt anyone.

Then I almost laughed at myself.

The loan was paid.

The reason for all that careful spending was finally gone.

I had worked hard enough to buy one bottle without feeling guilty.

So I bought it.

I carried it back toward the office with a strange feeling of accomplishment.

It was not really about champagne.

It was about allowing myself to enjoy something.

For once, the money did not have to go somewhere else.

I put the bottle where I could see it beside my things.

During the afternoon, my eyes kept returning to it.

I imagined Daniel coming home tired and finding that I had planned a small celebration.

Then I remembered that he would probably be home before me.

That was fine.

I would be the one to surprise him.

I thought about the way we used to talk before his company became the center of everything.

We could sit for hours discussing plans.

Sometimes those plans were serious.

Sometimes they were things we knew we might never do.

It did not matter.

I liked feeling that we wanted the same things.

I missed that feeling more than I had admitted to myself.

And now I thought we had a chance to find it again.

The afternoon passed quickly.

I finished the work that needed my attention.

I did not accept another assignment simply to fill the remaining time.

That was another small victory.

I packed my laptop.

I picked up the champagne.

And I headed home earlier than I had on many evenings during the previous three years.

On the drive, I practiced telling Daniel what I wanted us to do next.

I wanted us to start saving again.

I wanted us to spend more time together.

I wanted to stop feeling that every conversation about our future ended with another request to be patient.

Perhaps we could take a short trip.

Perhaps we could finally replace some of the old furniture we had kept using because there was always a more urgent expense.

I thought about ordinary things.

Furniture.

Quiet weekends.

A little savings.

Nothing that should have been difficult for a married couple to discuss.

I imagined Daniel smiling when I brought out the champagne.

I imagined him remembering the apartment.

I hoped he might mention it without my having to ask.

I wanted to hear that he understood what I had given up.

Not because I needed him to repay me with compliments.

Because I had spent three years feeling that our marriage depended on my willingness to keep sacrificing.

I wanted to know that we could finally stop.

I did not know that Daniel had already stopped thinking of our marriage the way I did.

I did not know that another woman had become part of his life while mine was filled with consulting assignments and bank payments.

And I certainly did not know that my husband was preparing to tell me I no longer belonged in the home I was driving toward.

I only knew that I was carrying champagne.

And for the first time in years, I thought I was going home to celebrate.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: I Came Home Carrying Champagne for Our New Beginning, but the
