But we're doing this for our future."

Our future.

Those two words were enough to make me agree to almost anything.

I wish I could say I questioned him more carefully.

I did not.

I accepted that the business problems were our problems.

And when he needed more financial help, I found ways to provide it.

I worked in consulting.

My regular assignments already required long hours, but I began accepting additional work whenever it became available.

Some evenings, I came home carrying my laptop and immediately opened it again.

Daniel would be somewhere in the house while I sat working at the kitchen table.

I would tell myself that the arrangement was temporary.

Another report.

Another client.

Another payment.

Eventually, we would be finished.

I used to calculate how much closer we were getting to that final day.

The numbers changed, but the promise stayed the same.

Once the debt was gone, everything would improve.

That was what Daniel said.

And I repeated it to myself whenever I wanted to stop.

There were nights when the words on my computer screen began to blur.

I would get up, wash my face, and sit back down.

The house would be quiet.

Sometimes Daniel had already gone to bed.

I could hear the refrigerator running while I worked.

I remember that sound because it became part of so many evenings.

My life had narrowed to a computer screen, a bank balance, and a promise about someday.

Someday, we would travel again.

Someday, we would spend an evening without worrying about money.

Someday, I would feel like a wife instead of someone constantly trying to prevent the next disaster.

I did not complain much.

I thought complaining would make me selfish.

Daniel had problems of his own.

He was trying to keep a business operating.

I told myself that my exhaustion was simply another part of the responsibility we had accepted together.

But the loan was enormous.

And after a while, extra consulting work was not enough.

That was when I started thinking about my parents' apartment.

It had belonged to me after they died.

It was not a large place.

There was nothing particularly expensive about the furniture or the rooms.

But every corner held something I remembered.

My mother used to welcome me there on Sunday afternoons.

I could still picture her moving around the kitchen while we talked.

My father had a favorite place beside the window.

He would sit there with the newspaper across his lap, sometimes looking outside before returning to whatever he was reading.

After they were gone, I found it difficult to enter the apartment without thinking about them.

Sometimes I stood in the doorway longer than necessary.

Sometimes I touched the back of my father's chair without realizing what I was doing.

It was the last property they had left me.

And for a long time, I thought I would keep it forever.

Then Daniel's business needed more money.

I cannot remember the exact moment when selling the apartment first became a serious possibility.

I only remember how the idea changed.

At first, it was something I refused to consider.

Then it became something I might have to consider.

Eventually, I was talking about selling it as though there had never been another option.

That change frightened me.

But I was more frightened of letting Daniel down.

I told myself my parents would have understood.

They had always wanted me to have a stable life.

They had wanted me to be happy.

Surely they would have approved of helping my husband when he needed me.

That was how I justified it.

I concentrated on what the money could accomplish.

I tried not to think about what I was giving up.

When the apartment was sold, I felt the loss more sharply than I had expected.

The papers had been signed.

The decision was finished.

There was no point regretting it.

Still, I kept thinking about the window where my father used to sit.

I wondered whether the new owner would put a chair there.

I wondered whether that person would ever understand what the room had meant to somebody else.

Then I reminded myself why I had done it.

Daniel's company needed help.

Our marriage mattered more than an apartment.

I repeated that thought until it became easier to live with.

I believed the sacrifice would mean something to Daniel.

Not because I wanted him to spend the rest of his life thanking me.

I simply wanted him to understand what it had cost.

But as time passed, his attention seemed to move further away from me.

During the final year of the loan, I noticed that he checked his phone more frequently.

Sometimes I would be halfway through telling him about my day when his eyes dropped toward the screen.

I would stop speaking.

He would finish looking at whatever had appeared and then ask me to continue.

Often, I no longer wanted to.

I told myself he was busy.

There were times when he walked outside to answer a call.

He would return several minutes later with the same distracted expression.

When I asked what was happening, he said it was work.

And I believed him.

Why wouldn't I?

The business had demanded so much from both of us.

I had seen enough financial pressure to know that it could change a person's behavior.

But there was something I never admitted to myself.

I missed my husband.

Not the man sitting across from me.

The man who used to pay attention when I spoke.

The man who seemed happy to see me come home.

The man I had married before every conversation became connected to a business problem.

Once, after I canceled another weekend away because of a consulting deadline, Daniel told me that we would have time for those things later.

I wanted to ask when later would finally arrive.

Instead, I opened my laptop.

I had become afraid of anything that might slow our progress.

And I was even more afraid of discovering that the future I kept working toward was not waiting for me anymore.

I did not know there was another woman.

I did not know Daniel had been seeing her for nearly a year.

I did not know that my determination to clear his debt was making it easier for him to prepare a different life.

All I knew was that we were getting close.

The remaining balance became smaller.

The bank statements began to look less frightening.

I could finally imagine the end of our financial problems.

And I was happy.

That is the part I find hardest to admit.

I was genuinely happy.

After everything I had sold, postponed, and endured, I believed I was about to reach the day that would make those sacrifices worthwhile.

Then October 27 arrived.

I woke before the alarm.

The bedroom was still dark.

Daniel was asleep beside me.

I lay there for a moment looking at his face.

He seemed relaxed in a way I had not seen for a long time.

I remember feeling relieved for him.

I thought I was about to tell him that the weight he had been carrying was finally gone.

I carefully got out of bed.

I went into the kitchen and made coffee.

Then I picked up my phone.

There was a message from the bank.

I opened it.

The final payment had been completed.

I stared at the confirmation.

I read it again.

Then I checked the amount.

The loan was fully paid.

Three hundred thousand dollars of debt had finally been cleared.

I put my phone down beside the coffee cup.

For a few seconds, I could not quite believe it.

There was no next payment to prepare.

No more calculating how much consulting work I needed to accept.

No more postponing everything that mattered to me.

I felt so relieved that I almost started crying right there at the kitchen counter.

I wanted Daniel to see the confirmation.

I wanted to watch his face when he realized we had made it.

And when I heard him coming into the kitchen, I picked up my phone again.

I had no idea that the moment I had imagined for three years was about to become my first real warning.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: I Showed Daniel the Final Bank Confirmation, and His
