4 – Two Faded Letters on Black Tape Changed the Biker’s Face, and I Learned Why He Could Not Believe What He Was Seeing

The cut wire was still in front of us.

That should have been the only thing I was thinking about.

It was dangerous.

It had been damaged in a way that didn't look natural.

And the man who owned the motorcycle had nearly dismissed my warning.

But then I saw the tape.

A tiny strip of black tape around the wiring.

I don't know why I looked at it twice.

Maybe because everything else had started to seem important.

Maybe because finding one hidden problem had made me more careful.

Whatever the reason, I couldn't leave it alone.

There were marks on its surface.

Faint ones.

They looked like writing that had been there for a long time.

I leaned closer.

The biker was still studying the damaged wire.

The other men were looking at it too.

I was the only one concentrating on the tape.

At first, I couldn't read the marks.

They were small.

Some of the writing had faded.

I changed my position to get a clearer look.

There were two letters.

That was all.

Two initials, separated by a small mark.

I stared at them until I was sure.

R.M.

I didn't recognize them.

They meant nothing to me.

They could have belonged to anyone.

They might have been the initials of somebody who had worked on the wiring.

They might have marked something ordinary.

I didn't know.

And I wasn't going to make up an explanation.

I just wanted the biker to see them.

He was the owner.

He knew the motorcycle.

He might know what the marks meant.

I looked toward him.

He was close enough to hear me without my raising my voice.

So I read the letters aloud.

"R.M."

That was all I said.

Two letters.

Nothing threatening.

Nothing dramatic.

But the biker reacted before I could ask my next question.

His face changed.

It happened so quickly that I almost looked behind me to see what had frightened him.

The color seemed to leave his skin.

His eyes widened.

He stopped examining the cut wire.

For a moment, he didn't even look at me.

He was staring at the little strip of tape.

I didn't understand.

Until that second, he had seemed worried about the damage to his motorcycle.

Now he looked as though he had seen something he could not explain.

Something far worse than a broken part.

I watched him.

I had never met this man before entering the garage.

I didn't know what usually made him angry.

I didn't know what frightened him.

But I knew his reaction wasn't ordinary surprise.

The initials meant something.

Something he hadn't expected to see.

I looked down at the tape again.

The letters hadn't changed.

R.M.

Just two faded initials on a narrow strip of black tape.

Nothing else.

I tried to understand what was happening.

The man had been firm with me from the moment I entered.

He had stood in my path.

He had questioned me.

He had refused to accept my warning without proof.

Even after we found the damaged wire, he had offered a reasonable explanation.

Vibration.

Wear.

Something ordinary.

But he had no quick explanation for these letters.

That frightened me more than I wanted to admit.

I asked whether he recognized them.

He didn't answer.

His eyes stayed on the writing.

The men around us became quiet again.

I could feel that they had noticed his expression.

Nobody tried to laugh it off.

Nobody told him that the initials were probably unimportant.

They just watched.

I waited.

I didn't know whether he needed another second or whether he hadn't heard me.

So I asked again.

Did those letters belong to someone he knew?

His mouth moved.

For a moment, no words came.

I had never seen a man that size look so uncertain.

He was still beside the motorcycle.

Still close enough to reach out and touch the wiring.

Nothing physical had changed.

The cut was there.

The tape was there.

The garage was the same.

But the atmosphere had changed completely.

He finally spoke.

He said it couldn't be right.

His voice was quiet.

So quiet that I almost missed it.

I looked down at the tape.

Then back at him.

I didn't understand what could be impossible about two initials.

Someone had written them.

Someone had wrapped the tape around the wiring.

The marks were faded, but they were real.

We were both looking at them.

I wanted to tell him that.

I almost did.

But I stopped myself.

He clearly wasn't denying that the letters existed.

He was struggling with what they meant.

I could see that now.

And I didn't want to interrupt him before he explained.

The other men stood near us.

Their attention had shifted from the wire to their fellow biker.

They were waiting for him to say something that would make sense of his reaction.

I was waiting too.

He looked at me.

For the first time, he seemed to have forgotten that I was a teenager who had entered his garage without an invitation.

He didn't look angry.

He didn't look suspicious of me.

He looked shaken.

I asked what was wrong.

He glanced back down at the initials.

His breathing seemed heavier.

Then he looked away from the motorcycle.

Toward the garage entrance.

I followed his eyes.

There was nothing in the doorway that explained what he was doing.

Nothing had arrived.

Nobody had called out.

He was simply looking in that direction.

I couldn't tell what he was thinking.

Maybe he needed to look somewhere other than the motorcycle.

Maybe he was searching for words.

I didn't know.

I just knew he had gone pale after hearing those two letters.

I waited.

The silence was becoming uncomfortable.

I felt as though I had touched something I wasn't supposed to touch.

Not the wiring.

Something in the man's past.

I had only read what was written on the tape.

I hadn't meant to upset him.

I hadn't come there to ask about anybody's history.

I had come because of the motorcycle.

That was all.

I wanted to stop him from riding it until the problem was understood.

And I had done that.

The wire was nearly severed.

The cut looked deliberate.

Those facts were enough to justify my warning.

But now there was another fact.

The initials.

The biker knew something about them.

And whatever he knew had made him forget, for a moment, about the damaged wire.

That was hard to understand.

I thought a cut wire would be the worst thing we found.

I had been wrong.

I watched his face.

I wanted him to tell me what the initials meant.

But I could also see he was having trouble speaking.

I had never felt so out of place.

I was standing among grown men.

I had brought their attention to a dangerous fault.

And now I was the one asking questions none of them seemed ready to answer.

Finally, I asked why he had reacted that way.

It was a simple question.

I wasn't trying to push him.

I honestly didn't understand.

He looked back at the tape.

Then he stared at the cut wire beneath it.

I wondered whether he was connecting the two things.

I was trying to connect them myself.

But I didn't have enough information.

The tape might have been there long before the wire was damaged.

The initials might have had nothing to do with the cut.

Or they might have meant something important.

I couldn't tell.

And I refused to pretend otherwise.

I had already learned how dangerous a confident assumption could be.

The motorcycle had been inspected.

Everyone had assumed it was fine.

It wasn't.

The biker had suggested that the wire was worn through by movement.

The edge showed something different.

Now I was looking at initials I couldn't explain.

I didn't want to make the same mistake by choosing an answer simply because it was convenient.

So I waited for him.

He seemed to be deciding whether to tell me.

The big man who had blocked my path now looked troubled by something I couldn't see.

I glanced toward the men behind him.

They were still quiet.

Nobody stepped forward with an answer.

Nobody contradicted him.

The garage had become a place where every person was listening for one man's next words.

I remember thinking how strange that was.

The first time he spoke to me, I had been the one struggling to answer.

Now it was him.

I asked once more who the initials belonged to.

He didn't respond immediately.

His gaze moved from the tape toward the entrance again.

Then he looked at me.

His expression was so serious that I stopped thinking about what question I should ask next.

I just listened.

He said the letters had been used by a man he knew.

That was the first part.

I waited for the rest.

I expected him to say the man had worked on the motorcycle.

Or that the tape was old.

Or that he hadn't seen those initials in years.

Something that would explain his surprise.

Something ordinary.

But he didn't.

He seemed unable to accept that the writing was there at all.

I looked down at it one more time.

R.M.

The letters were still exactly where I had found them.

The biker swallowed.

Then he told me why seeing them had disturbed him.

The man who had used those initials was dead.

Not recently.

Not last week.

Not even last year.

He had died twelve years earlier.

I didn't speak.

For a moment, I couldn't think of a single useful thing to say.

I looked at the initials.

Then at the nearly severed wire.

Then back at the biker.

Twelve years.

I had walked into his garage thinking I needed to point out a problem with his motorcycle.

I had expected him to be angry.

I had expected the men to laugh.

I had even expected to discover that my warning was unnecessary.

But I had never expected this.

A deliberately cut wire.

A strip of black tape.

Two faded initials.

And a man standing beside his motorcycle, staring at those initials because someone he associated with them had been dead for twelve years.

I wanted to ask how that could be possible.

I wanted to ask whether the tape had been there all along.

I wanted to ask whether the man who had died had ever worked on that motorcycle.

But I didn't know the answers.

Neither the tape nor the cut could tell us when they had been placed there.

And the letters alone couldn't prove who had written them.

Those were the facts.

I had to hold on to them.

The biker remained beside me.

The other men stood in silence.

Nobody was laughing at me anymore.

I looked down at the motorcycle.

The side panel was still off.

The wiring was still exposed.

And the damaged section was still exactly where I had found it.

That part was no longer in question.

The motorcycle had a serious fault that needed attention before anyone rode it.

But the initials had turned a mechanical problem into something none of us could explain from what we had seen.

I hadn't solved that mystery.

I hadn't even begun to understand it.

All I knew was that the biggest man in the garage had gone pale when I read two letters from a piece of tape.

And those letters belonged, in his memory, to someone who had been dead for twelve years.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: I
