3 – I Found a Nearly Severed Wire Hidden Under the Motorcycle, and the Biker’s Explanation Fell Apart When He Saw the Cut

I remember the moment my fingers stopped.

Until then, I had been looking.

Searching.

Trying to prove a warning I had made before I had any physical evidence to put in the owner's hands.

Now there was something in front of me.

Something real.

One of the wires had been damaged.

I didn't say anything immediately.

I looked at it again.

It hadn't broken completely.

A small section was still holding.

Most of it had already been cut.

I moved my fingers away from the damaged spot.

I didn't want to make it worse.

The biker saw my expression.

He asked what had caught my attention.

I pointed.

Then I moved the nearby wires so he could see the one I meant.

He leaned closer.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

I could tell he was trying to understand what he was looking at.

The damage was small.

It wasn't something that would necessarily catch your eye unless you were looking at that particular place.

From outside the motorcycle, it had been hidden.

Even with the panel removed, the wires had to be brought into view.

That explained how the problem could have remained unnoticed.

It didn't explain why the wire looked the way it did.

I looked at the biker.

He was staring at the damaged section.

His expression had changed.

He no longer looked annoyed with me.

He looked concerned.

Then he offered an explanation.

He said the movement of the motorcycle might have worn the wire down.

It was possible for wiring to suffer damage over time.

I knew that.

He knew that.

It was the first reasonable explanation available to him.

And I could see why he wanted it to be true.

Ordinary wear meant an ordinary problem.

A fault that could be found and repaired.

Nothing more.

But I didn't think ordinary wear explained what I was seeing.

I looked at the damaged wire again.

There was something about the edge.

Something I needed him to notice.

I told him I didn't agree.

He turned toward me.

I wasn't trying to argue with him.

I wasn't trying to make him look foolish in front of the other men.

I simply couldn't accept an explanation that didn't match the evidence.

I moved the connector carefully.

I turned it toward a brighter part of the garage.

Then I brought the damaged section where he could examine it directly.

The biker leaned in.

His eyes moved over the wire.

I waited.

I didn't want him to take my word for it.

That had been the problem from the moment I walked in.

He needed to see it himself.

The mark wasn't ragged.

It didn't look as though the wire had been gradually rubbed against something.

There was a clean separation through most of it.

A deliberate-looking cut.

I felt my stomach tighten.

I had wanted to find a reason to stop him riding.

I hadn't wanted to find this.

The biker stared at the wire.

I asked him to look at the edge.

He did.

I asked whether ordinary vibration would leave that kind of mark.

He didn't answer right away.

His eyes remained fixed on the damaged section.

I could see him reconsidering what he had just told me.

That was when the others began moving toward us.

Not all at once.

One came closer.

Then another.

The men who had laughed at me were suddenly interested in what was hidden beneath the motorcycle's frame.

They wanted to see what we had found.

I moved enough to give them a better view.

I didn't let go of the section I was holding.

I was careful with it now.

The damage mattered.

The way it had been made mattered.

And I didn't want anyone to mistake a fresh break for the original mark.

The biker's face had lost its earlier certainty.

He looked from the wire to me.

Then back again.

I could almost see the questions forming.

Who had done this?

When?

How had it escaped the inspection?

I couldn't answer those questions.

And I wasn't going to pretend I could.

I only knew what was right in front of us.

The wire had been cut nearly all the way through.

The cut was clean.

The difference mattered.

I told him that damage from rubbing usually left signs of rubbing.

This didn't have that appearance.

He studied it again.

He had enough experience with motorcycles to know why I was drawing his attention to that.

He didn't need me to turn it into a lecture.

We just looked.

It was a strange moment.

A few minutes earlier, he had been standing over me, demanding that I explain myself.

Now we were crouching side by side, examining a small piece of wiring.

And the question was no longer whether I belonged in his garage.

It was whether someone had deliberately interfered with his motorcycle.

I thought about the inspection he had mentioned.

That morning.

The bike had been checked that morning.

I didn't know what the men had examined.

I didn't know whether this connector had been visible to them.

I didn't know when the wire had been damaged.

Those things were beyond what I could prove.

But the condition of the wire was there for everyone to see.

That was the important part.

The biker had wanted evidence.

Now he had it.

I expected him to be angry.

Maybe he was.

I couldn't tell.

His face had gone still.

There was no smile left.

No trace of the amused disbelief he had shown when I first warned him.

He continued watching the wire.

The other men crowded closer, trying to get a better look.

Nobody was making jokes anymore.

One of them leaned to the side to see the mark.

Another watched the biker's reaction.

I understood that the cut alone was enough to change everything.

The motorcycle shouldn't be ridden with a nearly severed wire left in place.

That was clear.

I had managed to stop him before he took it out.

But I didn't feel proud.

Not the way I had imagined I might feel if I proved him wrong.

I felt uneasy.

Because there was a difference between a damaged motorcycle and a motorcycle someone had deliberately damaged.

A huge difference.

I looked at the wire again.

I tried to imagine how such a clean cut might have happened by accident.

I couldn't make it fit.

I hadn't seen anyone damage the bike.

I didn't know who had access to it.

I couldn't accuse anybody.

All I had was a physical mark.

I made myself remember that.

Evidence wasn't the same as an explanation.

And a warning wasn't the same as knowing the whole story.

I told the biker that the cut didn't look accidental.

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

He didn't argue.

He just kept looking.

I had wanted him to understand why I had stopped him.

Now he understood enough to be concerned.

The room was silent around us.

I could feel the other men waiting for him to react.

I wondered whether he was thinking about the inspection.

Whether he was wondering who had touched the motorcycle.

Whether he was realizing how close he had come to riding it without seeing the damage.

I couldn't know.

I was only a boy beside his motorcycle.

I didn't know his history.

I didn't know the people in that garage.

I didn't know what he would do with what I had found.

I kept my attention on the exposed wires.

I was still holding them carefully.

The small connector remained turned toward the light.

There was grease on it.

I had been so focused on the clean cut that I hadn't examined every other detail.

That bothered me.

I had made one important discovery.

I didn't want that discovery to make me careless about everything around it.

So I looked over the wiring again.

Not pulling.

Not disturbing anything unnecessarily.

Just checking what was already visible.

My eyes moved along the harness.

Over the nearby wires.

Past the connector.

And then I noticed another small detail.

There was something wrapped around part of the wiring.

A narrow strip of black tape.

It could easily have been overlooked.

I almost overlooked it myself.

But now that the damaged wire had drawn everyone's attention, I was looking more carefully.

The tape caught my eye.

I leaned closer.

It wasn't the cut.

It wasn't damage.

It was something else.

Something that had been left on the harness.

I could see faint marks on its surface.

At first, I couldn't make them out.

I shifted slightly.

Then I looked again.

They weren't scratches.

They were writing.

Very small writing.

I stared at the black tape.

I had found what I came to find.

A reason to stop the biker from riding.

But the writing hadn't been part of my warning.

I hadn't expected it.

And I didn't yet understand what it meant.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Two Faded
