1 – I Walked Into a Garage Full of Bikers and Told the Biggest Man There Something He Did Not Want to Hear

I knew I was going to have trouble the moment that man stepped in front of me.

I just hadn't expected him to be so big.

His head was shaved clean.

His shoulders seemed almost as wide as the doorway I had just walked through.

And he looked at me like I had come somewhere I had no business being.

Maybe he was right.

I was a teenage boy standing inside a garage full of grown men.

I had a backpack hanging off one shoulder.

I wasn't carrying anything that made me look like I belonged there.

No tools.

No motorcycle helmet.

Nothing.

Just a reason for coming in that I was already beginning to regret.

The man looked me over.

Then he asked what I was doing there.

I could have answered him properly.

I could have explained why I had stopped.

I could have tried to sound polite.

Instead, I kept looking past his shoulder.

There was a black motorcycle behind him.

That was what had caught my attention.

Not the men.

Not the garage.

The motorcycle.

I couldn't stop looking at it.

The man noticed.

Of course he noticed.

He shifted his weight and moved farther into my line of sight.

He wanted my attention on him.

I understood that much.

He asked whether I had wandered into the wrong place.

I told him I hadn't.

One word.

That was all I gave him.

Looking back, I can understand why he didn't like my answer.

A stranger walked into his garage, refused to explain himself, and kept staring at his property.

I wouldn't have liked it either.

But at that moment, I wasn't thinking about what he thought of me.

I was thinking about what might happen if he took that motorcycle out.

There was something I couldn't ignore.

I wasn't holding proof in my hand.

I hadn't touched the machine.

I hadn't opened anything.

All I had was the feeling that I needed to stop him before he rode it.

And I was standing in front of a man who didn't look interested in hearing feelings.

He glanced toward the motorcycle.

Then back at me.

He told me to quit looking at it.

His voice wasn't especially loud.

It didn't need to be.

A few men were working near a bench farther inside the garage.

They heard him.

I saw one of them turn his head.

Another stopped what he was doing.

They weren't involved yet.

They were just watching.

That somehow made it worse.

I had come through the door expecting to say something important.

Now I had an audience.

And I hadn't even managed to say why I was there.

The big man waited.

He looked as though he expected me to apologize and leave.

For a moment, I considered doing exactly that.

I could have backed away.

I could have told myself the motorcycle wasn't my responsibility.

It wasn't mine.

I didn't know the man.

I had no reason to believe he would listen to me.

And if I was wrong, I was about to make a complete fool of myself in front of everyone.

But if I was right, walking away would be worse.

That was the part I couldn't get past.

I looked at the black motorcycle again.

Then I forced myself to look directly at its owner.

I told him not to take it out.

He stared at me.

I didn't add anything.

I simply stood there.

The room seemed to lose its ordinary noise.

I became aware that the men near the bench were no longer just glancing in our direction.

They were listening.

The biker leaned toward me.

He wanted to know what I had just said.

I could have softened it.

I could have said I was only asking him to be careful.

But that wasn't what I meant.

I was warning him.

So I said it again.

He shouldn't ride that motorcycle.

Not yet.

His expression changed.

Until then, I think he had seen me as an annoying kid who had walked in without permission.

Now he was trying to decide whether I was making some kind of accusation.

He moved closer.

I held my ground.

I wish I could say that meant I was brave.

It didn't.

My legs felt stiff.

My mouth was dry.

I was frightened enough that I could hear how unevenly I was breathing.

I just didn't move.

The biker asked why he should listen to me.

I told him there was a problem with the machine.

He looked over his shoulder.

For a second, his face suggested that the whole thing was ridiculous.

Then he turned back.

He told me the motorcycle had already been inspected earlier that day.

He said it with certainty.

Not as a guess.

As something that had been settled.

I understood what he was telling me.

People had checked it.

People who belonged in that garage.

People he trusted to know what they were doing.

And here I was, a kid with a schoolbag, telling him they had overlooked something.

I could see how unreasonable it sounded.

But I couldn't agree with him just to make the conversation easier.

I shook my head.

He asked what that was supposed to mean.

I said the inspection hadn't found everything.

That answer didn't help.

One of the men by the workbench laughed.

It was a short laugh.

Not enough to interrupt us.

Just enough to remind me how little they thought of what I was saying.

Another man crossed his arms.

Nobody rushed to defend me.

Nobody told the biker to give me a chance.

Why would they?

I had offered them nothing they could examine.

Nothing they could hold.

I was asking them to believe me before I had shown them a single thing.

And the man whose motorcycle I was warning him about was growing impatient.

He looked down at me.

I had to raise my eyes to meet his.

He asked whether I understood that the bike had been checked.

I told him I had heard him.

Then I said the part he didn't want to hear.

Something had still been missed.

That made him pause.

It wasn't a long pause.

But I noticed it.

He wasn't laughing.

He wasn't waving me away anymore.

He was deciding what to do with me.

I could feel the other men waiting for his reaction.

In that garage, his response mattered.

If he told me to leave, I would have to leave.

If he decided I was insulting him, there was no one I knew standing nearby to make things better.

The motorcycle sat behind him.

Black.

Silent.

Apparently ready to be ridden.

It looked ordinary enough from where I stood.

That was what bothered me.

A person could look at it and see nothing wrong.

The biker had looked at it.

The men who checked it had looked at it.

And everybody seemed satisfied.

Everybody except me.

I had to find a way to make him understand that I wasn't trying to embarrass him.

I wasn't there to challenge him.

I wasn't interested in proving that a teenager knew more than a group of experienced men.

I simply wanted him to leave the motorcycle where it was until I could show him what concerned me.

He watched my face.

I wondered whether he could tell how scared I was.

Maybe that was why he hadn't thrown me out.

Maybe he was just curious.

I didn't know.

All I knew was that he hadn't stepped aside.

And without him stepping aside, I couldn't reach the motorcycle.

He looked toward the others.

One of them was still wearing the beginning of a smile.

The big man didn't join him.

Instead, he turned his attention back to me.

He raised one hand.

Then he pointed toward the black motorcycle.

It was a small movement.

But everything in that room seemed to change with it.

He told me I could prove what I was saying.

If something was wrong, I should show him.

I stared at him.

For a moment, I almost couldn't believe he was giving me the chance.

Then he moved out of my way.

The path to the motorcycle was open.

I had asked him to trust a warning.

He had refused to do that.

But he was willing to let me try to prove it.

That was fair.

More than fair, considering how I had walked into his garage.

I tightened my grip on my backpack strap.

Then I started toward the black motorcycle.

The men watched me go.

I was no longer just the boy who had interrupted their work.

I was the boy who had made a claim.

And now I had to show them why.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Biker Let Me Touch His Motorcycle, but Every Man in That Garage Expected
