4 – After I Offered Marriage to Anyone Who Could Comfort My Boy, I Had to Face What My Promise Really Meant

The room had gone quiet around me.

Not completely.

My son was still crying.

But the conversations that had filled the hall before my announcement had lost their easy rhythm.

People were looking at me now.

Some seemed to find the situation almost funny.

Others looked as though they wanted me to explain myself.

I couldn't.

Not properly.

I had just offered to marry a woman if she could stop my son's tears.

I hadn't planned it.

I hadn't spoken to anyone about it beforehand.

I hadn't even decided whether I meant it.

I had simply reached the end of my patience with a situation nobody was to blame for.

And then I had made it everyone else's business.

I remember looking from one face to another.

There was surprise.

There was uncertainty.

There were people trying to decide whether I had made a serious declaration or said something foolish in a moment of distress.

The uncomfortable truth was that I couldn't tell them which one it was.

I wanted to stand by my words because everyone had heard them.

At the same time, I wanted to take them back.

Both feelings were there.

I had made the announcement because I loved my son.

That was what I told myself first.

And it was partly true.

I loved him more than I knew how to explain.

Watching him suffer had become almost unbearable.

I wanted his laughter back.

I wanted the silence between us to end.

I wanted him to feel that the world still held something good.

But when I thought about the exact words I had spoken, I couldn't pretend they were only about him.

They were about me too.

I was frightened of being the father who couldn't help his child.

I was frightened that my inability to comfort him would become permanent.

And I was frightened that if his grief continued, the distance between us would grow until I no longer knew how to reach him.

I had been living with those fears since Elena died.

I hadn't spoken about them.

I had barely admitted them to myself.

Now they had come out in front of our guests as a promise of marriage.

It was a terrible way to express what I felt.

I looked at my son again.

He was the reason everyone had gathered.

He was the reason the hall felt so different from the way it once had.

And he was the only person in the room whose opinion I hadn't even considered before speaking.

That realization hurt.

I had said what I wanted.

I wanted his tears to stop.

I wanted him to laugh.

I wanted someone to reach him.

But I hadn't asked what he wanted.

He had hardly spoken since his mother died.

That didn't mean his wishes no longer mattered.

It meant I needed to listen more carefully.

I knew that.

Yet my public promise had turned his sadness into something people could attempt to overcome for a reward.

I hadn't intended to make him feel like a problem.

But that was what the announcement risked doing.

I stood near the staircase and tried to understand how I had reached that point.

A short while earlier, I had been watching people offer comfort.

Now I had made an extraordinary promise to anyone who could succeed.

The difference was only a few words.

But those words changed the meaning of everything.

The people who had come to help were no longer simply guests offering kindness.

My announcement had placed an expectation before them.

I had made it sound as though there was one correct result.

No more crying.

No more sadness.

A happy child.

And a marriage in return.

I began to see how unreasonable that was.

My son wasn't crying because someone had failed to entertain him.

He was crying because his mother was gone.

Elena.

Even thinking her name made my chest tighten.

She hadn't been somebody who could be replaced by a promise made in a crowded room.

She had been my wife.

She had been his mother.

Our loss was not a challenge for someone else to win.

I knew that when I allowed myself to think clearly.

But I hadn't been thinking clearly.

I had been thinking about laughter.

One small sound.

A sound I had taken for granted before Elena died.

I missed hearing my son laugh so badly that I had begun to treat it as proof that everything could be repaired.

That was another mistake.

A child could laugh and still be sad.

A child could cry and still be loved.

I understood those simple things when I thought about them.

But understanding and accepting were not the same.

I still wanted him to stop crying.

I still wanted to hear him speak again.

I still wanted the people around us to find some way to help.

The wish hadn't disappeared just because I recognized how badly I had expressed it.

And the promise remained.

I had said it in front of everyone.

I couldn't make them forget.

I couldn't make myself forget either.

Some guests had reacted with amusement.

Others had looked at me with disbelief.

Neither reaction changed what had happened.

I had placed myself in a situation I didn't understand.

If someone found a way to comfort my son, what would my words require of me?

Could I offer marriage to a woman I barely knew?

Could I make such a decision while I was still grieving Elena?

Would our boy understand?

Would it make him feel loved?

Or would it only leave him more confused?

I had no answers.

Those questions hadn't occurred to me when I spoke.

That was what made the moment so painful to remember.

I had made a promise involving three lives without thinking carefully about any of them.

Mine.

My son's.

And the life of whichever woman might take me seriously.

I had acted as though my desperation was enough to justify the offer.

It wasn't.

The hall remained full of people who had come because they cared about us.

I tried to remember that.

Their kindness hadn't failed because my son was still crying.

Their presence hadn't become meaningless because they couldn't make him happy.

And my son hadn't failed them by refusing to feel better.

He was simply grieving.

The same as me.

I kept returning to that thought.

The same as me.

We were both living with Elena's absence.

We were both struggling with something we couldn't change.

Yet I had treated his grief as a problem that someone needed to solve immediately.

And I had treated my own grief as something I could keep hidden behind a tired expression.

The crying continued.

I listened to it again.

For a moment, I tried not to think about stopping it.

I tried to hear it without judging what it meant about me.

That was difficult.

I had spent so long feeling helpless that the sound seemed to accuse me.

But my son wasn't accusing me.

He wasn't demanding that I make a public promise.

He wasn't asking for a new wife.

He was missing his mother.

I knew that much.

I had known it all along.

I looked toward the guests.

They were still processing what I had announced.

Some seemed to wonder whether I would stand by it.

I wondered too.

I couldn't honestly say yes.

I couldn't honestly say no.

At that moment, all I could admit was that the words had come from a place of fear.

I wanted my boy to be happy again.

That wish was real.

But I had confused wanting something with knowing how to make it happen.

I looked back toward the staircase.

I had spent the entire gathering standing close to it, watching other people try to do what I couldn't.

Perhaps that was what I would remember most.

Not the shocked faces.

Not the awkward silence.

Not even the promise.

I would remember that I had looked for an answer in everyone else because I was terrified that I didn't have one.

I had offered marriage as though happiness could be guaranteed.

As though grief could be persuaded to leave.

As though the next person who brought a smile to my son's face could somehow restore the life we had lost.

But Elena was still gone.

My boy was still crying.

And I was still his father.

Nothing about those facts had changed.

My promise was now hanging over the gathering, and I had no idea whether anyone would take it seriously.

I didn't know if somebody could make him laugh.

I didn't know whether I would be capable of honoring what I had said.

I didn't even know whether hearing him laugh would make me feel the relief I imagined.

What I knew was much smaller.

I missed my wife.

I loved my son.

And in a room full of people who wanted to help us, I had made a promise before I understood what I was asking.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: I Had Promised to Marry Whoever Could Stop My Son’s Tears, but I
