3 – I Let My Fear of Losing My Son’s Happiness Become a Public Promise That Neither He Nor Our Guests Had Asked For

I wish I could say I thought carefully before speaking.

I didn't.

I was tired.

I was frightened.

And I had begun to mistake desperation for determination.

My son was still crying.

The people in our hall were still trying to help.

And I was still standing near the staircase, watching every unsuccessful attempt as though it were proof that nothing would ever improve.

It wasn't proof.

I know that.

But fear can make a person believe things that would seem unreasonable on an ordinary day.

I had lost Elena.

I couldn't bear the thought that I might lose the happy parts of our son too.

Of course, he was still there.

He was still my boy.

Grief hadn't changed that.

But I missed the version of him who spoke freely and laughed without hesitation.

I wanted to believe that child was waiting somewhere beneath the sadness.

And I wanted someone to bring him back.

The thought had been growing all evening.

At first, I hoped the guests might comfort him.

Then I began wondering whether one of them might do something I couldn't.

After that, the idea changed into something more dangerous.

I started thinking about what I would offer if someone succeeded.

I didn't have a sensible answer.

What could I possibly give someone in exchange for making my child happy?

A thank-you?

Gratitude?

I was already grateful to the people who had come.

None of them had asked me for anything.

But I wanted to make the possibility of success feel important.

I wanted the people around me to understand how badly I needed help.

And, if I am admitting everything, I wanted someone to take my desperation seriously.

I felt invisible inside that room.

Everyone could hear my son's crying.

Everyone could see that I was struggling.

But nobody could change what had happened to Elena.

Nobody could tell me how to help our boy.

I had never felt so powerless.

I knew that our guests weren't responsible for fixing our lives.

But I was beginning to act as though they were.

My attention moved around the hall.

I looked at the people who had tried.

I looked at those who had watched quietly.

I listened to the small conversations that continued in spite of everything.

Then I looked back at my son.

Still crying.

That was the moment when I stopped keeping the thought to myself.

I spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear.

And I offered marriage to whichever woman could finally calm my boy.

The words sounded strange as soon as they left my mouth.

I had put marriage and my son's grief into the same sentence.

I had made a promise about the future because I couldn't cope with the present.

I saw people turn toward me.

The conversations stopped.

For a brief moment, the room seemed to be listening to nothing but what I had just said.

I knew I had surprised them.

I had surprised myself.

Marriage.

I hadn't expected to say that word.

Not in that room.

Not while I was still struggling to accept that Elena was dead.

I could hardly understand how I had gone from missing my wife to offering to marry somebody else.

It wasn't because I had stopped loving her.

I hadn't.

It wasn't because I had found someone.

I hadn't.

It was because I had allowed the sound of my son's crying to convince me that I needed an extraordinary answer.

I had offered something enormous without knowing what it would mean.

I looked around the hall.

Some guests seemed entertained by the announcement.

I noticed looks exchanged between them.

Other people stared at me.

Their expressions made it clear that they weren't sure I could possibly be serious.

I couldn't blame them.

I wasn't sure myself.

That was the worst part.

I had spoken as though I knew exactly what I was offering.

But inside, I was confused.

I didn't know whether I had meant the promise literally.

I didn't know whether I would be able to keep it.

I didn't know what I expected anyone to do.

I only knew that the thought of hearing my son laugh again had become so important that I was prepared to say almost anything.

I stood there and felt the weight of the attention.

The elegant hall hadn't changed.

The staircase was still beside me.

The people were still the same people who had come to comfort us.

But the gathering felt different now.

I had made it different.

Before I spoke, their efforts had been acts of kindness.

Now I had turned those efforts into a challenge.

I had brought marriage into a room where people were trying to help a grieving child.

I had made a public promise out of something deeply private.

There was no way to pretend I hadn't done it.

I looked toward my son.

He hadn't stopped crying.

That fact should have reminded me what mattered.

Instead, I found myself thinking about the promise.

What if someone succeeded?

What if a woman managed to make him laugh?

What would I do then?

I didn't have an answer.

I had made the offer without thinking about the person who might accept it.

I hadn't considered whether she would know me.

Whether we would care about each other.

Whether marriage would be right for either of us.

And I hadn't thought about what my son might feel if I suddenly brought another woman into our family.

He had lost his mother.

That was the one fact I should have kept in front of me.

Instead, I had treated his tears as something that could decide my future.

It embarrasses me even now.

I had meant to show how much I loved him.

But love wasn't the only thing behind my announcement.

There was fear.

There was impatience.

And there was a selfish wish to stop feeling helpless.

The guests had heard my offer.

Their reactions were impossible to miss.

Some looked almost amused.

Some seemed uncomfortable.

Others appeared genuinely stunned.

I stood in the middle of all that attention, realizing how little thought I had given the words.

There was nothing I could add that would make them sound sensible.

So I didn't try to explain them.

I looked toward my son again.

Still crying.

I had made the biggest promise I could imagine.

And it hadn't changed the one thing that mattered.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: After I Offered Marriage to Anyone Who Could Comfort My Boy, I Had to
