She's making things up."

I wanted to shout.

I wanted Daniel to remember that I had spent the afternoon telling him I was innocent.

But Lily was in my arms.

I kept my voice steady.

"I saw him come into the house around twelve-thirty."

Daniel turned back toward me.

"Where did they go?"

"Your father's study."

Margaret's face tightened.

"She's lying."

I looked directly at her.

"Then why were you talking about the company accounts?"

Nobody answered.

The room felt different now.

Daniel was no longer looking only at me.

He was studying his mother.

Margaret had always carried herself with certainty.

She stood straight.

She spoke as though she expected everyone to believe her.

Even her clothes looked carefully chosen.

That afternoon she wore a pale-blue blouse, dark trousers, and her hair pulled back into a tight bun.

But her hands weren't completely still.

Daniel noticed her silence.

"Mother, did you meet Victor?"

She avoided the question.

"Your wife is desperate. That's what this is."

I shook my head.

I was desperate.

But not for the reason she wanted Daniel to believe.

I wanted someone to hear what had happened.

The previous night, Lily had woken crying.

I had gone downstairs to warm a bottle for her.

That was how I heard voices coming from the study.

I wasn't looking for secrets.

I was taking care of my baby.

The study door was closed, but the argument inside was loud enough for me to hear parts of it.

Margaret was speaking.

So was a man.

I had heard her say that the transfer was finished.

She believed Daniel would not find out until it was too late.

I remembered standing there with Lily needing her bottle.

I hadn't known what transfer they meant.

Then the man spoke.

He said that once the money was gone, the girl would be blamed.

Those words had frightened me.

I hadn't understood who he meant.

Not completely.

But after Daniel accused me of taking two million dollars, I understood why I had been afraid.

I looked at him.

"They were talking about making someone take the blame."

Daniel's forehead tightened.

"Who?"

I felt Lily move against my arm.

"Me."

Margaret gave a short laugh.

It sounded forced.

"That's absurd."

Daniel didn't laugh.

He looked at her.

"Why would Emma make up a story about Victor?"

Margaret folded her arms.

"Because she knows she's been caught."

I watched Daniel's face.

There was something there I had not seen earlier.

Doubt.

Not necessarily belief in me.

But doubt about what his mother was saying.

That mattered more than I wanted to admit.

Daniel had known me for three years as his wife.

He knew I didn't spend my days chasing expensive things.

I didn't ask him for jewelry.

I wasn't interested in luxury vacations.

I spent time volunteering at a community center.

I also gave money of my own to families who needed help.

None of those things proved I was innocent.

I knew that.

But they were part of the woman Daniel had known before he decided I was a thief.

He looked toward his phone.

Then he made a call.

"James, I need the security footage from the hallway outside my father's study."

James was our head of security.

Daniel gave him the time he wanted checked.

Margaret moved toward her son.

"There's no need to involve security."

Daniel lowered the phone.

"Why not?"

"Because you're letting her turn this into something it isn't."

He watched her.

"If nobody came here, the cameras will show that."

Margaret said nothing.

I looked down at Lily.

Her eyes were closed again.

She was so small beneath that white blanket.

I kept thinking about the two million dollars.

I had never seen that much money in one place.

I had never even imagined touching that kind of amount.

Yet Daniel had believed I could secretly take it.

And Margaret had looked me in the face and called me dishonest.

Twenty minutes passed before James arrived.

He carried a laptop.

Daniel had him connect it to the television in the living room.

I remained on the sofa.

Margaret stayed standing.

James opened the recordings.

The screen showed the entrance to the property.

The timestamp read twelve twenty-eight in the morning.

A black luxury sedan came through the driveway.

I recognized it immediately.

"That's the car."

Daniel leaned forward.

A tall man got out.

The camera caught enough of his face for Daniel to recognize him.

Victor Collins.

Daniel whispered his name.

I watched the screen.

Margaret appeared near the entrance.

She greeted the man.

Then she took him inside.

Toward the study.

I felt something loosen in my chest.

Not happiness.

Relief.

Because Daniel could finally see that I had told him the truth.

Margaret stood perfectly still.

The footage continued.

About forty minutes after arriving, Victor came back out.

He was carrying a black leather briefcase.

He walked to the sedan and left.

James stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel turned toward his mother.

"Why was Victor Collins in this house?"

Margaret looked down.

"I can explain."

Daniel's voice became firmer.

"Then explain it."

She took a breath.

"Victor got in touch with me a few months ago."

Daniel stared at her.

"After everything that happened with Dad?"

Margaret nodded.

I watched her carefully.

The same woman who had denied knowing anything about Victor was now admitting she had been speaking with him for months.

Daniel asked why.

Margaret hesitated.

Then she said Victor had information concerning Robert's death.

Daniel went very still.

His father had died five years earlier.

The family had been told he suffered a sudden heart attack.

That was the explanation everyone had accepted.

I had never met Robert Harrison.

But I knew Daniel carried his father's absence with him.

The business had come from Robert.

So had the family name that meant so much to Daniel.

Now Margaret was saying there might have been something Daniel never knew about his father's final days.

"What information?" Daniel asked.

Margaret looked toward the floor.

"Your father found something before he died."

"What did he find?"

She rubbed her hands together.

"Money was being taken from the company."

Daniel frowned.

"Victor was the one accused of doing that."

Margaret didn't answer immediately.

Then she explained that someone inside the company had been taking money for years.

I looked from Margaret to Daniel.

The missing two million dollars was no longer sounding like a single unexplained transfer.

It was beginning to sound connected to something much older.

Daniel stepped closer to his mother.

"Who was doing it?"

Margaret began crying.

"I was frightened."

"Who, Mother?"

She covered her face.

For several seconds, she wouldn't answer.

Daniel asked again.

Finally, she lowered her hands.

"Your uncle."

Daniel took a step backward.

"Richard?"

Margaret nodded.

I knew who Richard Harrison was.

He was Robert's younger brother.

And he was the company's chief financial officer.

Daniel trusted him.

After Robert died, Richard had helped Daniel run the business.

He had guided him through important decisions.

Daniel spoke of him as someone who had always been there when he needed him.

Hearing his name in that living room changed the look on Daniel's face.

He seemed unable to make sense of it.

"Uncle Richard has been stealing from the company?"

Margaret looked ashamed.

She didn't deny it.

I couldn't take my eyes off Daniel.

Only a short time earlier, he had been certain I was the person who had betrayed him.

Now his own mother was naming someone he had relied on for years.

Someone whose job gave him access to the company's finances.

Someone close enough to hide things in plain sight.

I waited for Daniel to look at me.

He didn't.

He was watching Margaret.

She wiped her cheeks.

Then she said something I had not expected.

"Victor didn't come here because he wanted to take anything."

Daniel looked confused.

"Why did he come, then?"

Margaret's voice shook.

"He came because he was worried about what Richard was doing."

Daniel stared at her.

She swallowed.

"He was trying to warn me."

I held Lily closer.

Margaret had denied the visit.

She had called me a liar.

And now she was admitting that the man I saw had come with a warning about Daniel's uncle.

Daniel asked what Richard intended to do.

Margaret looked at her son with tears in her eyes.

"He wants to ruin you."

The words stayed in the room.

Daniel didn't answer.

Neither did I.

I looked down at the white blanket in my lap.

Only an hour earlier, I had been trying to convince my husband that I hadn't stolen his money.

Now we were hearing that his uncle might be responsible for years of theft.

And that someone close to the family had been planning to bring Daniel down.

I wanted to feel vindicated.

Instead, I felt exhausted.

Because the evidence that I had told the truth about Victor still hadn't brought me an apology.

Daniel had not taken back what he said.

He had not told me I could stay.

I was still the woman he had ordered out of the house.

And Lily was still the baby I had been holding when he said it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Mother-in-Law Finally Admitted Why She
