1 – Three Weeks After Giving Birth, I Sat Holding Our Daughter While My Millionaire Husband Stood Before Me in Anger

I was still recovering from giving birth when I found myself crying in front of my husband.

Our daughter was asleep against my chest.

She was only three weeks old.

Her name was Lily.

I kept one arm beneath her little body and the other around the white blanket that covered her.

Across from me stood Daniel Harrison.

My husband.

The man I had married.

The father of the baby I was holding.

He looked furious.

I remember his navy-blue suit more clearly than I remember the words spoken that afternoon.

His white shirt was open at the collar.

He stood in front of me while I sat on the edge of the sofa.

I had to look up to see his face.

I was twenty-seven years old then.

Daniel was thirty-six.

There were nine years between us, but that wasn't what mattered in that room.

What mattered was that I was sitting down with our newborn in my arms while he stood over me, angry.

I wish I could say I felt strong.

I didn't.

My hands were shaking.

I kept looking down at Lily because I didn't want to look at Daniel's face.

She was sleeping so peacefully.

Her small face was partly hidden by the fold of her blanket.

She knew nothing about the anger in the room.

That made me want to cry harder.

Outside, rain covered the enormous windows of the Harrison mansion.

The house stood in one of Connecticut's wealthiest neighborhoods.

It was the kind of place people admired before they even stepped through the front door.

Everything inside had been chosen to look expensive.

The floors were imported Italian marble.

The furniture came from designers whose names I had barely known before marrying Daniel.

There were paintings on the walls that cost more than some families earned in years.

And in the center of the house stood a wide staircase leading to twelve bedrooms.

Twelve.

I remember thinking about that number while holding Lily.

A house with twelve beautiful bedrooms.

And there I was, crying on a sofa with my three-week-old daughter.

That contrast has stayed with me.

Not because the house was beautiful.

Because beauty had done nothing to make that afternoon easier.

The sofa beneath me was cream-colored.

I sat close to its edge, afraid that moving too suddenly might wake Lily.

I was still tired from childbirth.

There was a heaviness in my body that sleep never seemed to fix.

I held my daughter a little closer.

Daniel didn't sit down.

I noticed that.

It seems like such a small thing now, but I remember it clearly.

He remained standing.

His anger had filled the space between us.

I tried to keep my breathing even.

I didn't manage it.

Tears kept slipping down my cheeks.

I didn't wipe them away immediately because both my hands were occupied.

One supported Lily's head.

The other kept her blanket in place.

I had never understood how helpless a person could feel while doing something as ordinary as sitting in her own living room.

But that was exactly how I felt.

Helpless.

And frightened.

I looked around the room without moving my head very much.

I could see the polished marble beneath Daniel's shoes.

Beyond him were the paintings and the sweeping staircase.

Everything was spotless.

Everything looked carefully arranged.

Nothing in that room showed what I was feeling.

Perhaps that was why I remembered those details.

I needed somewhere to put my eyes.

Somewhere other than my husband's angry expression.

Daniel had been born into a very different life from mine.

His father had built a real estate company worth millions.

After his father died, Daniel inherited the business.

By thirty-six, he had become a powerful man in his own right.

His position gave him influence.

His money gave him choices.

And his name carried weight.

I knew all of that.

I had known it before that afternoon.

But knowing a person was wealthy and being confronted by that person's anger were two different experiences.

In that room, I wasn't thinking about the company or the money.

I was thinking about my daughter.

I kept checking that she was breathing comfortably.

Her chest moved gently beneath the white blanket.

I could feel the warmth of her against me.

It was the one thing that made the room seem real.

Daniel was still there.

Still angry.

Still looking at me.

I wanted him to see how exhausted I was.

I wanted him to remember that Lily had been born only three weeks earlier.

I wanted him to look at her.

I cannot say what he was thinking.

I only knew what I saw.

His expression was hard.

His posture was tense.

And I was crying.

Looking back, I wish I could tell you I had some clear plan for what to say.

I didn't.

My mind kept returning to the same simple fact.

We had a newborn daughter.

She was only twenty-one days old.

I was still learning how to care for her.

I was still learning how to be her mother.

And now I was trying to understand the anger of the man who was supposed to be raising her with me.

Rain continued running down the tall windows.

Somewhere beyond the glass were the lawns and expensive homes of the neighborhood.

Inside, the only sound I could hear clearly was my own uneven breathing.

I held Lily.

Daniel stood in front of me.

And I tried to make sense of how our family had come to this moment.

I did not have an answer.

Not then.

<a
