We're not canceling our wedding because some child brought in forged checks."

She looked toward the guests.

"She's lying to everyone."

Lucy drew back.

It was a small movement.

But I saw it.

The girl had stood in front of us through everything.

She had answered questions.

She had shown us the checks.

She had told me where Olivia was.

Yet one angry accusation from Victoria still made her shrink.

I wondered how many times she had heard that kind of voice before.

I could not know.

All I knew was that she was frightened now.

Then Victoria moved toward her.

Fast.

There was no time to ask what Victoria intended.

I stepped between them.

I caught Victoria by the shoulders.

She tried to keep moving.

I held her where she was.

"Stop it."

I did not shout.

I did not need to.

The words came out more firmly than anything I had said that day.

Victoria stared at me.

The chapel quieted.

I could hear the rain outside.

That sound seemed strangely distant.

For a moment, it was just the three of us.

Victoria.

Lucy.

Me.

And I was standing on the child's side.

Victoria looked as if she could hardly believe it.

"So you trust her more than me?"

I did not answer immediately.

Trust.

It was an important word.

I had trusted Olivia once.

Then I had trusted Victoria.

I had never stopped to consider that trusting one person had become an excuse not to listen to another.

I looked down at the photograph I was holding.

It showed Olivia and me together beside a lake.

Twelve years earlier.

I remembered that day.

We had brought a picnic basket.

I dropped it.

Olivia laughed so hard that I started laughing too.

I remembered the sunlight.

The water.

The way she leaned against me.

Her hand rested over the small curve of her pregnant stomach.

I had loved her then.

I did not have to invent that memory.

It was real.

That was what made looking at the photograph so difficult.

For years, I had trained myself to remember what happened afterward.

I had put the ending ahead of everything good.

Whenever I thought about Olivia, I pictured the night she came to my apartment.

She looked pale.

She was trembling.

She would not meet my eyes.

Then she told me the baby was not mine.

I remember how those words felt.

I remember waiting for her to explain.

I remember trying to understand why she had let me believe otherwise.

She did not give me the answers I wanted.

And I was too hurt to see that she might be afraid.

That is something I can admit now.

At the time, all I saw was rejection.

I thought she had betrayed me.

I thought every happy memory had become a lie.

Two days later, Victoria came to see me.

She brought wine.

She sat with me while I struggled to make sense of what had happened.

She told me I deserved better.

She told me some women hurt men without caring what they destroyed.

I remember listening.

I remember feeling relieved that somebody seemed certain about what had happened.

That certainty was comforting.

I had none of my own.

Victoria helped give my anger a shape.

She gave me words for it.

And after a while, I stopped questioning those words.

Now I was looking at a photograph that showed Olivia's pregnancy.

And a set of checks that linked Victoria to her disappearance.

I could not ignore the timing.

I could not ignore Lucy.

I could not ignore how frightened Victoria had become when the papers appeared.

But I could not pretend that those things answered every question either.

A check could show that money had changed hands.

It did not tell me why Olivia accepted it.

A signature could connect Victoria to a payment.

It did not explain what threats might have been made.

And Lucy's claim that she was my daughter was something I desperately wanted to believe but had not established.

I had learned something from being wrong about Olivia.

Or perhaps I had only begun to learn it.

I could not decide the truth based on what I wanted to be true.

Not again.

I faced Victoria.

"I don't know what to believe yet."

She seemed to relax.

For a moment, I saw relief cross her face.

Maybe she thought I was coming back to her side.

Maybe she believed I would let everything end with a private conversation.

I could not know what she was thinking.

But I knew what I needed to do.

I turned to Daniel.

"Call the police."

Victoria stopped moving.

The relief disappeared.

Daniel looked at me.

I repeated myself.

"Please call them."

He took his phone out.

"And get an ambulance sent to the motel on Route 16. Olivia Bennett might need emergency help."

I looked toward Lucy.

"Room 204."

I wanted Daniel to understand that the room number mattered.

He nodded.

My hands were shaking.

I had not noticed until then.

I tried to steady them.

Victoria said my name.

I did not turn.

Lucy was watching Daniel make the call.

I wondered whether she understood what an ambulance meant.

I wondered whether she was relieved.

Or whether hearing adults speak about her mother needing emergency care made the fear worse.

I could not ask her everything at once.

I needed to understand how she had come here.

"Lucy, did someone bring you?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"How did you get here?"

"I took the bus."

She hesitated.

"Then I ran the rest of the way."

I looked at her wet clothes again.

The soaked sweatshirt.

The rain dripping from her hair.

The way she seemed to be trying not to shiver.

She had traveled through a storm to reach me.

Alone.

I could barely understand what that meant for a girl her age.

She had left her mother at a motel.

She had found a bus.

Then she had run to the chapel.

I wanted to ask why no adult had helped her.

I wanted to ask how long she had been traveling.

But those questions were not going to change where we were.

She had made it.

That was what mattered now.

I lowered my voice.

"How did you know I was getting married here?"

Lucy looked toward Victoria.

"Mom had the invitation."

That answer seemed to unsettle Victoria more than anything else Lucy had said in the last few minutes.

She shook her head.

"No. She couldn't have."

I turned toward her.

"Why not?"

Victoria did not give me an explanation.

She just kept looking at Lucy.

I noticed her expression.

She was no longer directing her anger toward the guests.

She was watching the girl's hands.

Lucy was holding an envelope.

The same envelope that had carried the checks.

I had hardly noticed it after the papers fell out.

Now she opened it again.

The edges were damp.

Her fingers moved carefully.

She reached inside.

Victoria took a small step forward.

I stayed between them.

Lucy pulled out a card.

Cream-colored.

Formal.

I recognized it immediately.

It was our wedding invitation.

Mine and Victoria's.

The same one we had sent out to announce the ceremony.

I had seen those cards before.

The lettering.

The paper.

The way the names were arranged.

There was no mistaking it.

But what I could not understand was why Olivia had one.

I had not sent it to her.

I had spent years believing she wanted nothing to do with me.

I had not even known where she was.

And yet she had received an invitation to the wedding.

Victoria stood beside me.

Her face had gone pale.

The girl held the card out.

"Look at the back."

I reached for it.

My fingers felt stiff.

I turned it over.

There was handwriting across the reverse side.

One short message.

It was not Olivia's writing.

I knew Olivia's handwriting from years earlier.

This was different.

And it looked terribly familiar.

I had seen letters shaped like these on cards from Victoria.

On notes.

On the very checks lying across the chapel floor.

I read the message.

Then I read it again.

It told Olivia that she had already been defeated.

And that she should remain gone, as though she were dead.

I felt something cold settle inside me.

Because someone had not simply known where Olivia was.

Someone had wanted her to know about my wedding.

Someone had sent her a message designed to hurt her.

And someone had written it in handwriting I recognized.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Message on the Back of Our Wedding Invitation Made Me Look at Victoria and Her Father in a Way I Never Had

I had been angry with Olivia for so long that I had forgotten what it felt like to worry about her.
