She gets people alone, and then nobody knows where they went."

I felt my stomach tighten.

I did not understand exactly what Lucy meant.

But she believed every word.

That much was clear.

Victoria went very still.

I noticed the change.

She had been pulling against my hand.

Now she barely moved.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

I watched her face.

I had spent enough time with Victoria to know how quickly she could answer a question when she wanted to.

She always seemed prepared.

She always knew what to say.

But she did not have an answer for Lucy.

Instead, she looked toward the guests.

Then toward the papers.

Then back at me.

I wanted to ask her whether she knew Olivia.

I wanted to know why she had been sending money.

I wanted to know what Lucy meant about people disappearing.

But another question mattered more.

I turned toward the girl.

"Lucy, where's your mother?"

She looked down.

I waited.

I was afraid that if I spoke again, she might stop talking.

She swallowed hard.

Then she gave me an answer that changed everything.

"She's at the old motel near Route 16."

I knew I needed to remember what came next.

"Room 204."

I repeated the number silently.

Two hundred four.

I can still remember it without effort.

Lucy rubbed her hands together.

"She wouldn't let me contact you before."

I could feel Victoria beside me.

I did not look at her.

"Why wouldn't she?"

Lucy glanced up.

"Mom said you hated us."

For a moment, I forgot about the people in the chapel.

I forgot about the priest.

I even forgot about Victoria.

All I could think about was the word us.

Olivia and Lucy.

A woman I had loved.

A child who might have been mine.

Lucy believed I hated them both.

I wanted to tell her it was not that simple.

But I knew how little comfort that would have been.

Because I had hated Olivia.

I had spent years telling myself I had good reason.

I believed she had lied to me about the pregnancy.

I believed she had walked away and left me to deal with the hurt.

I believed she had made her choice.

I had never considered that someone else might have been making it for her.

And now I was standing in a church, looking at payments made by my future wife to the woman I had once planned a life with.

I could not make those facts fit together.

Not yet.

But I could no longer keep them separate.

I looked at Lucy again.

She had come to this wedding carrying papers.

She had come knowing Victoria would be there.

She had come despite being afraid.

And she had come because of something involving her mother.

I had spent nine years believing Olivia had abandoned me.

Nine years treating my own hurt as proof that I knew the whole story.

I had never been willing to examine how much of it depended on what other people had told me.

I knew what Olivia had said when she left.

I knew what Victoria had said afterward.

And I knew how I had responded.

I had chosen which version to believe.

Maybe because it was easier.

Maybe because anger was less painful than admitting I had lost someone I loved without understanding why.

Lucy watched me carefully.

I wondered what she saw.

A man dressed for his wedding.

A stranger.

Someone her mother had warned her about.

Someone she had still decided to find.

I wanted to kneel down and ask her everything.

I wanted to know how Olivia had been living.

I wanted to know whether she was safe.

I wanted to know why she had never tried to reach me.

But Lucy had already told me where Olivia was.

And I understood that the next thing she said might be even harder to hear.

"Lucy," I said, "is Olivia alive?"

She pressed her lips together.

Her eyes filled.

"She was when I left this morning."

I felt my grip loosen slightly.

Not on Victoria.

On the idea that I understood what was happening.

Because until that moment, I had been thinking about betrayal.

About the wedding.

About whether the checks proved Victoria had lied.

Now there was a woman in a motel room who might be dying.

And there was a child who had left her there to come find me.

I looked at Victoria.

She looked back at me.

For the first time, I did not want reassurance from her.

I wanted the truth.

And I was beginning to understand that I would not get it by simply asking her to explain.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: When Lucy Told Me Where Her Mother Was Hiding, I Realized My Anger Had Kept Me From Asking the Right Questions

I thought the worst thing Olivia Bennett had ever done was leave me.
