7 – Dale Rusk Tried to Leave the State Before Police Questioned Him Again, and His Admission Finally Explained Why Mara Had Been Followed

I didn't feel relieved when I learned Dale Rusk had tried to leave.

I felt sick.

That surprised me.

Part of me had wanted him to make a mistake.

I'd wanted something that would help the police see beyond his careful answers.

But when I heard he'd packed a bag and headed toward the state line, I couldn't stop thinking about what it might mean.

People didn't always run because they were guilty.

I knew that.

But the timing was hard to ignore.

The detective had wanted a second interview.

Rusk had decided to leave.

And Mara was still missing.

I wondered what he was afraid the police would discover.

Then I reminded myself that wondering wasn't knowing.

I had done too much of that already.

I needed to wait for verified information.

The highway patrol stopped him before midnight.

That much was established.

He hadn't made it across the state line.

He was brought back into the investigation, and the detectives had another opportunity to question him.

I couldn't control what he told them.

I couldn't force the truth out of him.

All I could do was hope he'd finally stop holding back.

I remember standing in the motorcycle shop with my hands resting on the workbench.

I wasn't working.

I was just standing there.

The old red training bike was nearby.

I could see its fuel tank from where I stood.

Normally, looking at that bike reminded me of Ava's visit.

Her questions.

Her curiosity.

Her asking whether I could show her how it worked someday.

Now I was thinking about her mother.

And the possibility that the person who had followed Mara might finally explain what had happened.

Doc was nearby.

He knew better than to interrupt when I went quiet like that.

After a while, he asked whether I'd heard anything more.

"Not enough," I told him.

He nodded.

I could tell he understood.

There was never enough information when someone you loved was missing.

Even good news left another question behind.

A confirmed sighting raised the question of where she went afterward.

An identified vehicle raised the question of who drove it.

An identified driver raised the question of what he'd done.

We kept moving forward.

But the distance between us and Mara still felt enormous.

I thought about Ava.

I hadn't told her that a man connected to the investigation had tried to leave the state.

It wasn't information she needed to carry before we knew what it meant.

I knew she hated being kept in the dark.

She'd made that clear.

But being honest with a child didn't mean passing every frightening detail directly to her.

I was still learning that difference.

There were things I could say without guessing.

The police were still looking.

They had found information about her mother's movements.

People were being questioned.

I was staying involved.

Those things were true.

I wanted to be able to offer more.

I wanted to tell her that Mara would walk through the door.

That everything would be all right.

That nobody had hurt her.

But I couldn't.

And I refused to make promises simply because they would sound comforting.

Ava deserved better.

The paternity report had made me her father.

It hadn't made me wiser overnight.

I was still learning what responsibility looked like when I couldn't solve the biggest problem in front of me.

Eventually, the detective shared what Rusk had admitted.

I listened without interrupting.

I wanted every word to be clear.

Rusk said a manager at Voss had paid him to monitor Mara.

Not because of an ordinary personal disagreement.

Not simply because of an old civil matter.

The assignment was tied to the Cedar House records.

The original records.

The documents Mara had gone looking for.

I felt my hands tighten.

There it was.

The connection we'd been circling.

A Voss manager had wanted to know whether Mara had obtained those documents.

Rusk had been paid to find out.

I could hear the explanation.

I could understand the words.

But accepting what they meant was another matter.

Mara had gone to the archive for records.

Someone connected with Voss had taken enough interest in her search to pay a security supervisor to watch her.

That wasn't something I could dismiss.

It made the old civil dispute seem much less distant.

I didn't know what the original Cedar House documents contained.

The detective hadn't given me an explanation that settled everything.

But I understood that they mattered to somebody.

Enough to follow Mara.

Enough to demand answers from her.

I asked whether Rusk had admitted confronting her.

The detective explained that he had.

I went quiet.

Until that moment, I'd been trying not to imagine a confrontation.

I'd told myself the pickup might have followed her only briefly.

That a matching route didn't automatically mean danger.

That there were things we couldn't establish from the camera.

Now Rusk had admitted he'd approached her.

The place was a gas station.

Mara had driven there after leaving the archive.

Rusk followed.

Then he confronted her.

I pictured the ordinary surroundings.

A place where people stopped for fuel.

Cars coming and going.

Nothing about it sounded like somewhere a woman should have to defend herself over documents.

But that's where he said it happened.

Rusk had demanded the papers.

I couldn't believe the nerve of it.

Mara had gone to a public records location to obtain information.

And a man had followed her to another stop to demand what she'd found.

I wanted to know exactly what he'd said.

Whether he'd threatened her.

Whether he'd tried to block her.

Whether Mara had recognized him.

But the detective could only tell me what was supported by the statement and what still needed checking.

I had to accept that.

Rusk claimed Mara had gotten away.

According to his account, she drove off before he could search her car.

I held on to that part.

She drove away.

He hadn't searched the vehicle.

At least, that was what he said.

I wanted it to be true.

I wanted to believe Mara had managed to put distance between herself and the man confronting her.

She was capable.

She was determined.

I remembered that about her.

But I also knew her ability to stand up for herself didn't mean she couldn't be harmed.

Strong people still faced danger.

Sometimes they faced more because they refused to give in.

I wondered whether Mara had known how far Rusk was willing to go.

I wondered whether she'd been trying to protect the records.

Or herself.

Or Ava.

I stopped.

Those thoughts were guesses again.

I didn't know what she'd been thinking.

The detective had given us Rusk's account.

That was all.

And his account still needed independent support.

I tried to concentrate on that.

The man had already offered one explanation that hadn't told the whole story.

Now he was providing another.

It was more detailed.

It fit some of what investigators knew.

But that didn't automatically make every part of it true.

I understood the need to check it.

I just hated how long checking could take.

After hearing the explanation, I kept returning to one question.

Why had Mara disappeared after the gas station?

If she'd driven away before Rusk searched the car, what happened next?

Where did she go?

Did anyone else see her?

Was she still carrying the Cedar House records?

We didn't know.

The new statement didn't solve her disappearance.

It explained why one man had followed her.

That was important.

But it wasn't the answer Ava needed.

I thought about the day she'd first found me.

She hadn't come looking for a complicated account of security contractors and civil disputes.

She'd come because her mother was missing.

That was still the central fact.

Everything else had to serve the effort to find her.

I asked the detective whether Rusk's statement changed the search.

He explained that it gave investigators more to examine and verify.

The inquiry was growing.

More information had to be checked.

There were people connected with the surveillance assignment who might have relevant knowledge.

The investigators would have to follow those connections through proper channels.

I understood.

But I could feel anger building in my chest.

Rusk had followed Mara.

He'd approached her at a gas station.

He'd demanded papers he had no right to simply take.

And now he was describing how she'd escaped him.

That word bothered me.

Escaped.

I kept thinking about the difference between somebody voluntarily leaving a conversation and somebody driving away because they feared what might happen if they stayed.

I didn't know exactly how Mara had experienced that encounter.

But I couldn't hear the account without imagining her wanting to get away from him.

I looked at the detective.

"So he follows her down the road, pressures her for the records, and we're supposed to call that keeping an eye on somebody?"

My voice was louder than I'd intended.

I knew it.

I could feel myself leaning into the argument.

The detective didn't raise his voice.

That made me feel worse.

He wasn't defending Rusk.

He was explaining the investigation.

But I was so angry that every careful answer sounded like another delay.

I wanted somebody to say plainly that Mara had been wronged.

I wanted someone to acknowledge that following her from the archive and demanding her papers was serious.

The detective did understand that.

He was treating it seriously.

The problem was that I wanted certainty before the evidence could provide it.

I wanted him to tell me what had happened after Mara left the gas station.

He couldn't.

I wanted him to tell me whether the Voss manager knew where she was.

He couldn't.

I wanted him to tell me whether Rusk had lied about her escape.

He couldn't establish that yet.

I hated every one of those answers.

Then Elena touched my sleeve.

Not hard.

Not dramatically.

Just enough to bring me back to the room.

I looked at her.

She didn't need to say anything.

I knew what she meant.

Listen.

Let him finish.

Don't turn your fear into an argument with the people trying to help.

I took a breath.

I stepped back from what I was about to say.

Looking back, I'm embarrassed by how close I came to making that conversation about my anger.

The detective had just given me important information.

I needed to understand it.

Instead, I was treating him as though he'd personally allowed Rusk to follow Mara.

That wasn't fair.

It wasn't useful either.

I apologized for interrupting.

Then I listened.

The detective explained that Rusk's claims had to be checked against independent evidence.

What he'd admitted was significant.

But it didn't establish where Mara was.

The investigation was expanding beyond the initial account of her disappearance.

That expansion mattered.

It meant the Cedar House records and the Voss connection were being taken seriously.

It also meant there might be more information to uncover.

I wanted immediate results.

But I understood that the police needed to build an accurate account, not simply accept the version that satisfied me.

Rusk might be telling part of the truth.

He might be leaving things out.

He might have misunderstood something himself.

Investigators had to establish what actually happened.

I left that conversation carrying more facts than I'd had before.

And somehow, more fear.

We knew why Rusk had followed Mara.

A Voss manager had paid him to learn whether she had original Cedar House records.

We knew Rusk admitted confronting her at a gas station.

We knew he claimed she drove away before he could search the car.

And we knew that afterward, Mara was still unaccounted for.

I thought about those details all the way back to the shop.

The dented toolbox.

The faded Hartwell decal.

The camera recording.

The gas station.

Each one marked another point in the effort to reconstruct her last movements.

For once, the facts were beginning to connect.

But the road still ended in uncertainty.

That evening, I thought about the Hollow Creek Riders.

They had helped me through difficult things before.

Doc understood how to organize people without turning everything into a spectacle.

And there were rural roads where Mara might have traveled after the gas station.

Places that could be searched carefully.

I knew we couldn't interfere with the police.

We couldn't disturb anything that might become evidence.

But I began to see a useful way the riders might help.

Not by confronting anybody.

Not by demanding answers.

By looking.

By reporting what they found.

By doing the patient work I had been resisting.

I spoke with Doc about organizing a search.

He listened.

Then we agreed it had to be disciplined.

No one would act alone.

Nobody would handle suspicious objects.

Anything important would go to the authorities.

It wasn't the kind of action I'd first imagined when I learned about Hartwell.

There would be no dramatic confrontation.

Just people covering roads and checking places where a vehicle might have gone.

But after everything I'd heard, I finally understood that useful action didn't have to be loud.

Sometimes it meant knowing when not to touch something.

When not to jump to a conclusion.

When to let trained investigators take over.

I had spent days wanting to take control.

Now I was ready to help without pretending the investigation belonged to me.

<a
