6 – I Wanted to Confront the Security Company Myself, but Elena Made Me Understand Why Mara Needed Evidence More Than My Anger

I took the information to Elena.

That decision sounds simple now.

At the time, it wasn't.

I had a name.

Hartwell Protective Services.

I had a possible connection to the Voss warehouses.

And I knew a pickup carrying that company's faded decal had followed Mara away from the county archive.

Every part of me wanted to go looking for answers immediately.

But I had promised myself I wouldn't do that.

So I went to Elena instead.

I told her what Warren had recognized.

I explained the timing.

Mara's car had left at 4:18.

The pickup followed about thirty seconds later.

Black truck.

Damaged metal toolbox.

Old Hartwell marking on the rear window.

I tried to keep my voice steady.

Elena listened carefully.

She didn't interrupt.

That helped.

I had been carrying the information around in my head, turning it over until every detail felt urgent.

Saying it aloud made me realize how little we actually knew.

We knew what the camera showed.

We knew the company name Warren recognized.

We knew Hartwell had a business connection with Voss warehouses.

But we didn't know who was inside the pickup.

We didn't know what that person wanted.

And we didn't know whether Mara's disappearance had begun with a confrontation.

Elena understood the distinction.

She made sure the information reached the detective handling the investigation.

That was exactly what I needed her to do.

It wasn't particularly satisfying.

There was no immediate confrontation.

No confession.

No dramatic answer.

Just information being put in the hands of the people responsible for following it.

I hated how slow that felt.

I also knew it was necessary.

If Mara had been threatened because of the Cedar House records, somebody had to establish that through evidence.

Not through my suspicions.

Not through threats.

And not through anything I might say while angry enough to forget my own judgment.

Elena knew that about me.

She didn't have to accuse me of being reckless.

I could see the concern in the way she listened.

I told her I wasn't going to Hartwell.

She seemed relieved.

I didn't blame her.

I had spent enough years around men who considered anger a useful way to settle things.

Sometimes I had been one of them.

I knew how quickly a confrontation could turn into something nobody intended.

A raised voice.

A step forward.

A hand on somebody's shoulder.

Then suddenly the question of who was right stopped mattering.

Everything became about what happened next.

Mara didn't need that.

Ava certainly didn't.

I wanted to be useful.

That meant learning to separate what felt good in the moment from what might actually help.

After Elena passed along the information, the detective began tracing the truck.

That was the part I couldn't have done properly on my own.

A vehicle had records.

A company had employees.

People could be identified and questioned.

The police had ways of checking those things without announcing every suspicion to the person they were investigating.

I understood that.

Still, I found myself waiting for updates with more impatience than I showed anyone.

At the shop, I tried to work normally.

Doc kept busy.

The place continued operating.

There were still motorcycles needing repairs.

Parts still had to be located.

Customers still expected their machines to be ready.

I used to find comfort in how ordinary the work was.

Now it seemed strange that business could continue while Mara was missing.

Somebody would ask about a repair, and I would answer.

I'd explain what was wrong with a motorcycle.

I'd describe the work it needed.

Then I'd realize that a few minutes had passed without me thinking about Mara.

The realization made me feel guilty.

I knew that wasn't reasonable.

Worrying every second wouldn't bring her home.

But fear didn't care much about reason.

I thought about Ava at Mrs. Hanley's house.

She was still going to school.

Still doing homework.

Still asking questions about books and stars.

Her life had to continue, even while something terrible remained unresolved.

If Ava could manage that, I had no excuse for abandoning everything around me.

So I kept working.

I kept my commitments.

And I waited.

Eventually, the detective identified the person associated with the pickup.

His name was Dale Rusk.

He was a supervisor at Hartwell Protective Services.

I repeated the name quietly when I heard it.

Dale Rusk.

Until then, the person driving the truck had been nothing more than a possibility in my head.

A dark window.

A vehicle moving behind Mara.

Now there was a name.

A real person investigators could question.

It made the danger seem closer.

It also made the investigation feel more serious.

I asked what the police knew about him.

The answer was limited.

He worked for Hartwell.

And the vehicle had been traced to him.

The detective had spoken with him about Mara.

That was enough to make me listen very carefully.

Rusk had an explanation.

He admitted he'd been assigned to keep track of Mara.

But he described it as work connected with an older civil matter.

I couldn't believe how ordinary he tried to make it sound.

An old civil dispute.

That was the explanation.

As if following a woman away from a county archive was simply another routine assignment.

I knew companies could hire investigators.

I knew disputes sometimes led to surveillance.

I wasn't so naive that I thought every private security job involved wrongdoing.

But Mara had vanished.

And the man associated with the truck behind her was acknowledging that he'd been watching her.

That mattered.

I wanted to know who had hired him.

I wanted to know what they'd asked him to do.

Most of all, I wanted to know why he hadn't come forward when Mara disappeared.

The detective couldn't turn every question into an immediate answer.

There were procedures.

There were statements to check.

And there was the problem of determining whether Rusk was telling the truth.

Rusk denied knowing where Mara had gone.

That was the part I kept returning to.

He had followed her.

At least, he admitted surveillance connected with her.

But he claimed he couldn't tell investigators where she was.

I found that difficult to accept.

I wanted to say that a man who admitted watching her must know more.

Maybe he did.

Maybe he didn't.

The police still had to establish it.

I forced myself to remember that.

I had no right to declare him guilty simply because his answers made me angry.

But I had every right to be concerned.

Mara had disappeared after visiting the archive.

A pickup had followed her.

The truck had a marking associated with a company serving Voss warehouses.

And now a Hartwell supervisor admitted he'd been tasked with observing her.

The pieces weren't enough to tell the full story.

But they were no longer random.

I thought about the Cedar House records again.

Mara had been trying to obtain original documents.

Someone associated with Voss appeared interested in her movements.

The coincidence was too important to ignore.

Still, I didn't know what the documents contained.

I didn't know how much Mara had managed to recover.

I didn't know whether she had spoken to anybody about them.

That uncertainty bothered me.

I had known Mara once.

Known her well enough to recognize her laugh.

Well enough to remember her repairing a bicycle and refusing to admit defeat.

But I was discovering how much of her life I hadn't seen.

The years we'd been apart weren't empty.

She had raised a daughter.

She had become involved in matters I barely understood.

She had taken steps that might have put her in danger.

I wished I could ask her about all of it.

There were days when I felt angry about being excluded from those years.

Then I would remember that she might be frightened or injured somewhere.

The anger would fall away.

I couldn't make my old hurt more important than her safety.

Not anymore.

When I visited Ava, I found myself paying closer attention to her.

She had Mara's way of asking a direct question and waiting for a real answer.

I could see how much she missed her mother.

Sometimes it was obvious.

Sometimes it was in the things she didn't say.

She might talk about the telescope.

Or school.

Or something she'd read.

Then she'd mention how Mara would have explained it.

Those were the moments that stayed with me.

Ava wasn't simply missing somebody who lived in the same house.

She was missing the person who had taught her how the world worked.

The person who knew how she liked her food.

Who understood what frightened her.

Who could tell when she needed reassurance without making her ask for it.

I couldn't take Mara's place.

I didn't want to.

I wanted Ava to have both of us.

And I wanted the chance to learn how to be her father without that learning beginning in grief.

During one visit, she talked about the red motorcycle at my shop.

She remembered it clearly.

She wanted to know whether it was still there.

I told her it was.

She seemed pleased.

I found that strangely comforting.

While I worried about trucks, security companies, and missing records, Ava was thinking about a machine she hoped to learn more about.

She still had room in her mind for ordinary curiosity.

I wanted to protect that.

Not by hiding everything from her.

But by refusing to let my fear become the only thing we talked about.

When I left Mrs. Hanley's home, I felt determined to do better.

I couldn't make the investigation move faster.

But I could stop treating every quiet moment like a failure.

I could be present when Ava needed me.

I could let Elena and the detective do their work.

That was more difficult than I expected.

A day could seem perfectly manageable until I remembered that Rusk had claimed not to know where Mara was.

Then I'd feel the anger all over again.

I pictured him giving that answer.

I wondered whether he'd looked the detective in the eye.

Whether he'd sounded confident.

Whether he'd been rehearsing an explanation before anyone asked him a question.

Those thoughts were useless.

They were guesses.

I knew it.

But fear kept trying to fill the gaps.

I talked with Doc about it.

He listened while I complained about how little Rusk's statement explained.

Doc didn't defend the man.

He didn't pretend the answers were satisfying.

He simply reminded me that statements could be checked.

People could be questioned again.

And the evidence was moving somewhere.

I wanted to believe that.

The police had already found the camera footage.

Warren had identified the decal.

The detective had traced the truck.

That was progress.

I had to stop measuring progress only by whether Mara was standing in front of me.

Even though that was the only outcome I cared about.

I kept thinking about what Rusk had called the job.

Surveillance related to an old civil matter.

The phrase sounded clean.

Professional.

As if paperwork could make the situation harmless.

But I knew words could hide what people were actually doing.

I'd heard men in the shop call a dangerous repair a simple adjustment.

I'd heard people describe serious problems as minor inconveniences.

The label didn't change the damage.

Rusk could describe following Mara however he wanted.

The detectives still needed to determine what he'd done.

And whether he'd told them everything.

That was the part I held on to.

The first interview wasn't the end.

It was a beginning.

If his account didn't fit the evidence, there would be questions.

If he had information he'd left out, investigators needed to find it.

I wasn't going to interfere with that.

Then the detective sought another interview with Rusk.

I took that as a sign that his first answers hadn't settled the matter.

I didn't know exactly what the investigators intended to ask.

I wasn't entitled to know every detail.

But I understood why they would want to speak with him again.

A missing woman.

A security contractor.

A surveillance assignment.

A truck following her away from the archive.

There were too many unanswered questions.

I spent that evening trying to keep my mind on ordinary things.

I thought about the shop.

About the repairs that needed finishing.

About Ava's next visit.

And about the cinnamon toast she liked.

I don't know why that detail kept coming back.

Maybe because it was so normal.

A child liked cinnamon toast.

That was a fact I could understand completely.

There was no deception in it.

No hidden connection.

No reason to question what it meant.

I wanted more facts like that.

Instead, we had Dale Rusk.

And before the police could bring him back for another conversation, he made a choice of his own.

He packed a bag.

Then he drove toward the state line.

I didn't know what was going through his head.

I wasn't going to pretend I did.

But I knew one thing.

A man who had claimed an ordinary surveillance assignment was now trying to leave before a second interview.

The investigators would have to deal with that.

And I was grateful I'd chosen not to confront him myself.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Dale
