I asked.

Lily stared at me as if the question hurt her.

"Mom."

She said it quietly.

She had already told us several times.

I had heard her.

But I had asked her to repeat it because I couldn't bring myself to respond to what she was saying.

There are ways adults dismiss children without telling them to be quiet.

Sometimes we ask the same question again.

Sometimes we make them explain what they have already explained.

Sometimes we look toward another adult for confirmation.

I had done all three.

Lily's lower lip trembled.

"Daddy, please."

I looked at Vanessa.

"Why is she saying this?"

Vanessa glanced briefly at the guests.

Then back at me.

"Because she doesn't want things to change."

There was no pause.

No uncertainty.

She answered as though she had already worked it out.

I almost accepted that too.

Lily had lost her mother in the only way she understood.

Through absence.

Whatever reasons I believed lay behind that absence, Lily still had to live with it.

Vanessa becoming my wife would make that absence feel permanent in a different way.

I had considered that.

I had worried about it.

But I had also trusted Vanessa when she said time would help.

Now Lily was crying beside a closed door, and Vanessa seemed more interested in explaining her behavior than finding out why it had happened.

"She's saying someone is inside," I said.

Vanessa gave a small shrug.

"She's confused."

"Then why not check?"

The question came out before I had fully considered it.

Vanessa went quiet.

Only briefly.

But I noticed.

I had known her as a woman who could answer almost anything without hesitation.

Now I was asking about a door.

Nothing complicated.

Nothing that should have required much thought.

Yet her eyes moved toward it.

"Daniel, you're encouraging this."

I stood still.

I could feel the room watching us.

I knew we were making a scene.

I knew that once something embarrassing happened in front of this many people, there was no easy way to undo it.

And I hated myself for still caring.

"Lily's frightened," I said.

"Yes, and making it bigger won't help."

My daughter stepped closer to the door.

Vanessa moved at once.

"Don't."

There was that sharp voice again.

One word.

Hard.

Nothing like the gentle reassurance she had just offered me.

I saw Lily flinch.

That did something to me.

For all the confusion in my head, I knew one thing.

My daughter should not have been afraid to approach a door in a room full of people who were supposed to care about her.

I shifted my attention completely to Lily.

"Come here."

She looked at me.

For a second, I thought she might refuse.

Then she took one small step.

I wanted to reach for her hand.

I wanted to tell her everything would be all right.

But that promise suddenly felt dishonest.

I did not know what was happening.

And I had no right to pretend I did.

"Tell me what you need," I said.

"Open it."

Her answer was immediate.

She didn't have to think.

"Please open it."

I nodded slowly.

Not because I believed everything she had said.

Not yet.

But because I could no longer justify refusing to look.

Vanessa watched the exchange.

Her hands were held close to her sides.

She seemed to be making an effort to remain composed.

"Lily needs to settle down first," she said.

I looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because she's hysterical."

The word landed badly.

Hysterical.

I had used words like that before.

Overtired.

Confused.

Upset.

Words that could explain away a child's behavior without making the adults responsible for examining it.

I looked at Lily again.

Yes, she was crying.

Yes, she was frightened.

But she was also consistent.

She had pointed to the same door.

She had made the same claim.

She had asked for the same thing.

Nothing about that had changed.

The room had become quieter.

I could no longer hear the ordinary conversation that had filled it earlier.

I became aware of the weight of the silence.

It was uncomfortable.

But there was something worse than discomfort.

There was the possibility that Lily was telling the truth.

I wasn't ready for that.

I don't know how else to say it.

If her mother was behind that door, then the life I believed I understood had been built around something false.

It meant the person I planned to marry might know more than she had told me.

It meant my daughter had been trying to reach someone I had stopped expecting to see.

I could barely think beyond those possibilities.

They were too large.

Too sudden.

So I looked at the door itself.

That seemed manageable.

Wood.

Brass.

A frame set into the ballroom wall.

Something real.

Something I could touch.

I took a step toward it.

Vanessa moved slightly into my path.

"Daniel, don't do this here."

I stopped.

There was something strange about the request.

Not don't frighten Lily.

Not let me help you.

Not there is nobody inside.

Don't do this here.

As if the audience mattered more than the answer.

I looked past Vanessa toward the door.

"What exactly am I doing?"

She didn't answer immediately.

And for the first time that evening, I stopped hoping she would provide an explanation.

I wanted to hear Lily.

Only Lily.

I turned toward my daughter.

She had gone quiet.

Her face was turned toward the oak panels.

She was listening.

That bothered me more than her shouting had.

A child who had been desperate to be heard had suddenly stopped speaking.

Not because she had given up.

Because she seemed to be waiting for something.

I followed her gaze.

The door stood still.

Nobody moved around it.

Nobody came to explain why it was closed.

And I had the uncomfortable feeling that we were all waiting for the same thing without admitting it.

Then a sound came from the other side.

One heavy knock.

The room seemed to contract around it.

Before I had time to understand what I had heard, another followed.

Then a third.

Slow.

Separate.

Unmistakable.

Someone had struck the door from inside.

I stared at the brass handle.

It hadn't moved.

The door remained shut.

But the argument we had been having was over.

There was someone behind it.

And whatever Vanessa wanted me to believe about Lily, my daughter had been right about that.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: THREE KNOCKS CAME FROM THE LOCKED ROOM, AND MY FIANCÉ’S FIRST REACTION MADE ME QUESTION EVERYTHING SHE HAD TOLD ME

Vanessa answered before Lily could say another word. "She's having a hard time tonight."
