7 – I Wanted to Believe My Daughter Would Always See a Safer World Than Mine, but That Afternoon Exposed How Fragile That Hope Really Was

The hardest thing about remembering that afternoon wasn't the sudden stop.

It was remembering how quickly I had expected violence.

I didn't want that to be the first thing my mind reached for when Sophie pointed at something.

But it was.

I had become accustomed to looking for danger before looking for anything else.

And I had brought that habit into every ordinary moment I shared with my daughter.

There was no way to pretend it affected only me.

She was beside me when my hand moved toward my weapon.

She was beside me when I turned sharply.

She was beside me when I expected someone to attack.

Whatever she had noticed near the flower stand, my reaction belonged to the life I had chosen.

I couldn't place that responsibility anywhere else.

I was Damien Moretti.

Thirty-nine years old.

Broad-shouldered, heavily tattooed beneath expensive clothing, and accustomed to people treating my words seriously.

I had become one of the most feared men in Chicago's underworld.

That position gave me influence.

It gave me protection.

It gave me reasons to distrust strangers.

But it didn't give me the ability to understand every moment.

It certainly didn't make me a better father simply because I could afford an armored car.

I had once thought providing protection was the largest part of my duty to Sophie.

Keep her close.

Keep danger away.

Make sure she never had to face the things I faced.

Those goals sounded reasonable.

They still did.

But standing on that sidewalk, I had begun to see how incomplete they were.

Sophie needed more than a father who expected the worst.

She needed someone who could stand beside her in the sunlight without turning every surprise into a threat.

She needed an ordinary afternoon to remain ordinary.

I wanted to give her that.

I wasn't sure I knew how.

The memory returned to the details of the street.

The shining windows.

The expensive shopping bags.

The flower planters.

The bright afternoon light.

Everything about that place suggested comfort and success.

It was a street where people came to buy things they wanted.

They moved quickly between shops.

They carried purchases in their hands.

They passed one another without any reason to stop.

We had been doing much the same thing.

Walking.

Nothing more.

My black car waited ahead.

I had no reason to believe we wouldn't reach it.

Sophie held my hand.

I remember how carefully I kept my grip gentle.

Her fingers were so small.

The size difference between us was almost ridiculous.

My hand had held weapons.

It had signed orders.

It had directed men who would never question me openly.

But when Sophie placed her hand inside mine, none of those things mattered.

It became a father's hand.

Something meant to guide her safely along the pavement.

And then she pulled free.

I felt it immediately.

She stopped before I could take another full step.

Her attention was fixed toward the curb.

She lifted her arm.

And pointed.

There was something about her certainty that I remembered afterward.

She knew where she wanted me to look.

I didn't.

Not yet.

My instinct was to search for whoever might be threatening us.

I turned quickly.

My body tightened.

My hand began moving toward the concealed weapon.

It happened with the ease of a familiar habit.

I didn't have to think about how to respond.

I thought I understood what kind of moment this was.

That was my mistake.

I had mistaken my expectations for knowledge.

I expected danger.

I expected an attacker.

I expected that my next movement would be part of getting Sophie safely away.

Instead, I followed her finger.

Toward the flower stand.

I looked.

And stopped.

Even now, I can remember the way that moment interrupted my thoughts.

I had been ready for a problem that required movement.

For something I could confront.

For a threat I could identify and respond to.

But I couldn't respond to what I didn't understand.

I couldn't force the moment to fit the dangers I had rehearsed in my mind.

And I couldn't pretend that my reputation gave me control over my own reaction.

It didn't.

I remained motionless.

The crowd continued around us.

I had never liked the feeling of being one person among many.

Power had made me accustomed to being noticed.

It had made me accustomed to having space around me.

But on that sidewalk, the people with their shopping bags had their own lives to attend to.

They were moving through an ordinary afternoon.

I was the one who had stopped.

The thought made me uncomfortable.

For all my influence, I couldn't stop the world merely because something had caught my daughter’s attention.

And I couldn't make an explanation appear simply because I wanted one.

There were limits to what I could control.

I understood those limits in theory.

That afternoon, I felt one of them.

My daughter had seen something first.

I had followed her direction.

And I had been left without words.

I kept returning to the way she looked that afternoon.

The cream-white dress.

The ivory bow.

The chestnut curls catching the light.

She was too young to understand the reputation her father carried.

Too young to know why the car had been reinforced.

Too young to know why I wore a weapon beneath my suit.

And yet she was old enough to notice something that stopped me.

I could hardly reconcile those facts.

Part of me wanted to keep her innocent forever.

Another part knew that childhood didn't last simply because a parent wished it would.

But I didn't have to solve her entire future on that sidewalk.

I only had to understand the moment we were in.

And I couldn't.

I had looked toward the flower stand.

That was where Sophie's finger led me.

The afternoon hadn't darkened.

The pedestrians hadn't disappeared.

The car hadn't moved.

All the familiar objects of the scene remained.

But my thoughts had come to a halt.

I was no longer the man preparing to confront an attacker.

I was a father who had been shown something unexpected by his daughter.

And whatever my reputation suggested, I had no control over the shock of seeing it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Armored Car Was Still Waiting and the Crowd Kept Moving, but I Could No
