5 – I Was Still Standing Beside My Daughter When I Realized That All My Precautions Had Prepared Me for a Different Kind of Trouble

I hadn't moved.

That was the first thing I understood about myself in that moment.

Sophie had stopped beside me, pointed toward the flower stand, and made me look.

I had looked.

Now I stood there, unable to take the next step.

For years, I had trusted my own reactions.

I believed experience would tell me when to move, when to wait, and when to protect myself.

More importantly, I believed it would tell me how to protect Sophie.

That afternoon, I had no immediate answer.

I was thirty-nine years old.

I had spent enough time in Chicago's criminal world to know that hesitation could be dangerous.

Other men hesitated around me.

I wasn't accustomed to doing it myself.

Yet there I was.

A father standing in bright afternoon sunlight, unable to continue walking.

The crowd hadn't stopped with us.

People still passed the storefronts carrying expensive shopping bags.

There was nothing unusual about the street itself.

The flowers were still arranged near the curb.

The polished shop windows still reflected the light.

My armored black car was waiting ahead.

Everything looked as it had moments earlier.

Except I was no longer thinking about getting into that car.

I was thinking about the sudden absence of Sophie's hand from mine.

I could still remember the way she had pulled free.

It wasn't a slow movement.

She had yanked her fingers away and stopped so abruptly that I had turned toward her before I understood why.

Then I saw her pointing.

Her small arm had directed my attention toward the flower stand.

I hadn't expected that.

My first thought had been danger.

Not flowers.

Not shopping.

Not the possibility that a child had noticed something interesting.

Danger.

That was what my life had taught me to see.

Looking back, I think that was one of the saddest things about the afternoon.

Sophie had been walking through a beautiful part of the city.

I had been walking through the same place while expecting someone to try to hurt us.

We occupied the same stretch of pavement.

We didn't experience it the same way.

She was five years old.

Her cream-white dress moved with her small body as we walked.

A large ivory bow rested among her long chestnut curls.

In the sunlight, she looked so young that I felt the familiar need to keep her close.

I had held her hand because she was my daughter.

I had also held it because I knew the kind of man I was.

Damien Moretti.

The name had a meaning in Chicago that a five-year-old child couldn't possibly understand.

I was a man people avoided offending.

I controlled things that respectable people preferred not to discuss.

The consequences of my decisions could reach places far beyond my immediate presence.

I knew all that.

I lived with it.

But Sophie didn't.

And I had never wanted her to.

I wanted her to have afternoons when the most important thing in front of her was a row of flowers.

I wanted her to notice the beautiful things without thinking about what might be hiding among them.

I wanted her to see storefronts rather than possible places for someone to wait.

Those wishes were simple.

The life I had made was not.

My brown suit was expensive and carefully fitted.

The white shirt beneath it was open at the neck.

Part of the dark tattooing across my collarbone remained visible.

I didn't need anyone to explain what those markings represented.

They belonged to my world.

So did the concealed weapon beneath my jacket.

So did the armored vehicle waiting for us.

I had brought all of it onto that sidewalk.

And I had brought Sophie into the middle of it.

That was something I couldn't separate from what happened.

When she pulled away, I reacted like the man I had become.

My shoulders tightened.

I turned sharply.

My hand drifted toward the gun I carried.

I hadn't seen anyone attack.

I hadn't heard a threat.

I hadn't even identified what Sophie was looking at.

But my body was already preparing for the worst.

I used to admire that about myself.

I believed quick reactions were proof of discipline.

I believed staying ready meant staying safe.

Sometimes those beliefs helped me survive.

But there was another side to them.

I couldn't simply enjoy walking with my daughter.

Even surrounded by expensive shops and well-dressed pedestrians, I was waiting for trouble.

I could hide the weapon.

I couldn't hide what carrying it had done to me.

I had expected Sophie to continue walking.

I had expected the car to be our next destination.

I had expected the afternoon to remain ordinary.

Then one small finger changed the direction of my attention.

And everything inside me shifted.

I followed her gesture.

That was all.

I didn't need to ask her to show me again.

She had made the direction clear.

Toward the curb.

Toward the flower stand.

I saw where she wanted me to look.

What followed was stillness.

Complete stillness.

I had no explanation for the sudden loss of movement.

I only knew that my expectation of an attacker had not prepared me for that instant.

I was accustomed to deciding what happened next.

At that moment, I couldn't.

The shoppers continued walking.

The afternoon continued around us.

And Sophie remained beside me.

I had wanted to be the father who always knew what to do.

For the first time that afternoon, I had to face the possibility that wanting wasn't enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The More I Remembered That Afternoon, the Harder It Became to
