25 – Ethan Found One More Piece of David’s Past That Explained Why He Always Feared Leaving People Behind

The discovery happened by accident.

That was how most important things in our family seemed to happen.

Not through dramatic searches.

Not through carefully planned moments.

Through ordinary days when someone opened a drawer, moved a box, or looked at something they had passed a hundred times before.

Ethan found the notebook while helping Melissa clean her attic.

The house had become too full of things they had kept because they belonged to David.

Some objects were meaningful.

Others were simply difficult to release.

Melissa had finally reached the point where she could sort through them without feeling as though she was losing him again.

“You don’t have to keep everything,” Ethan told her.

“I know.”

“Do you believe that?”

She smiled.

“I’m learning.”

Inside one box was a collection of notebooks.

David’s handwriting.

Different years.

Different ages.

Different versions of himself.

Ethan called me immediately.

“Grandma.”

“What now?”

“I found Dad’s journals.”

I sat down.

“Are they private?”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you reading them?”

He paused.

“Because he left them.”

“That is not automatically permission.”

“I know.”

“Good.”

“I’m asking because one of them has my name.”

That changed things.

“What does it say?”

“I haven’t opened it.”

“Then wait.”

“I wanted to ask you first.”

That sentence told me how much he had changed.

Years earlier, he would have searched first and apologized later.

Now he was considering the person behind the words.

Melissa joined him before he opened it.

They sat together at the kitchen table.

The same table where arguments had happened.

The same table where apologies had happened.

The same table where they had finally learned to speak honestly.

The journal was dated shortly after Ethan’s birth.

David had written about becoming a father.

The first pages were joyful.

Terrified.

Funny.

He wrote about not knowing how to hold a baby.

About being afraid he would drop him.

About standing beside Ethan’s crib at night just to make sure he was breathing.

Ethan laughed.

“That sounds familiar.”

I smiled.

“It should.”

Then the tone changed.

David wrote about fear.

Not the dramatic kind.

The quiet kind.

The kind that made him check locks twice.

The kind that made him calculate every possible danger.

He wrote:

I thought becoming a father would make me fearless.

Instead it gave me something new to lose.

Ethan stopped reading.

“That’s me.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I got that from Mom.”

“You got it from everyone.”

He continued.

David described the pressure he placed on himself.

The belief that if he was careful enough, he could prevent pain.

If he worked hard enough, he could protect everyone.

If he anticipated every problem, nobody would suffer.

The impossible promise.

The one no person can keep.

At the end of the journal entry, David wrote:

The danger is that love can convince you impossible things are your responsibility.

Ethan closed the notebook.

“That sentence explains everything.”

It did.

The panic attack.

The videos.

The arguments.

The fear.

The way he tried to prepare Ethan for life without him.

David had spent years learning the same lesson Ethan later needed.

Love does not mean controlling outcomes.

It means being present despite uncertainty.

Click here to continue reading: PART 26: Melissa Learned the Difference Between Protecting Ethan and
