16 – I Kept the Photograph Where I Could See It and Let the Girl in the Green Dress Belong to Me Again

A few days later, I dusted the shelf where I kept my photographs.

I moved each frame carefully and wiped the wood beneath it.

Some pictures showed people I had known for years.

Others showed places that had changed so much I could barely recognize them.

I cleaned the glass on every frame before putting it back.

When I reached the school photograph, I held it for a moment instead of wiping it immediately.

The girl in the back row looked as serious as ever.

Her green floral dress was still visible.

The little flowers were blurred by the age of the print, but I could make out their pattern.

I wondered whether she had worried about wearing it that day.

Perhaps she had.

Perhaps she had simply dressed and gone to school without giving it a second thought.

I would never know.

For too long, I had filled that uncertainty with embarrassment.

I had imagined her checking her reflection and feeling ashamed before she even reached the hallway.

I had imagined her wishing she owned something better.

But those were memories I had added later.

I could remember the humiliation without pretending I knew every thought that came before it.

I wiped the glass gently and returned the photograph to the shelf.

Then I stepped back to see how it looked beside the other frames.

It belonged there.

That thought made me smile.

The photograph did not belong at the back of a drawer.

It did not need to be hidden because it contained a memory of pain.

It was part of my life.

So was the girl in the dress.

I could acknowledge what had happened to her without treating her as someone I needed to rescue from view.

She had been a teenager.

She had worn the clothes she had.

She had been laughed at by someone who should have known better.

Then she had gone on living.

I wanted to remember that last part more often.

I finished dusting and returned the cloth to the cupboard.

Later, I sat at the kitchen table and looked through my notebook.

The pages contained thoughts I had written in the days after the reunion.

Some were short.

Some were repeated in slightly different words.

I did not feel the need to correct them.

They showed me how I had worked through the memory, one thought at a time.

I found the line about not making my pain smaller.

I found the sentence about the dress.

I found the words about being quiet.

Each one marked a moment when I had seen something differently.

I turned to a blank page.

For a while, I did not write anything.

Then I wrote, I can let the girl in the green dress belong to me again.

I read the sentence slowly.

It was not a promise to forget.

I did not want to forget what Brenda had done.

Forgetting would not make the event less real, and remembering did not require me to remain wounded by it forever.

I wanted to reclaim the parts of the memory that had been taken over by shame.

The dress had been mine.

The hallway had been part of my school years.

The girl who stood there had been me.

Brenda had been part of the scene, but she was not its owner.

She did not get to decide what the dress meant for the rest of my life.

I closed the notebook.

That evening, I prepared dinner and listened to the radio while I worked.

The announcer spoke about a local event, then introduced a song I recognized from years ago.

I found myself humming along.

For a few minutes, I thought of nothing connected to the reunion.

I thought about the melody and the words I remembered.

I thought about how the evening light looked against the kitchen wall.

I enjoyed the quiet.

When the song ended, I realized I had not been checking my thoughts for signs that I was still upset.

I had simply been living.

The next morning, I received a message from Eleanor asking whether I wanted to meet for a walk the following week.

I answered yes.

Then I added that I could choose the route this time.

She replied that she would trust my judgment, provided I did not lead her into a muddy field.

I laughed aloud.

I wrote back that I made no promises.

The exchange was ordinary and friendly.

I liked that it was ordinary.

My life was made of these small conversations, familiar routines, and plans that did not need to become anything more than what they were.

I did not want to spend every day studying the old hurt.

I wanted to remember it accurately and then allow other things to happen.

That afternoon, I took the school photograph down once more.

I looked at it for a final moment before returning it to the shelf.

I no longer tried to imagine what Brenda had seen when she looked at me.

I no longer asked whether my dress had given her a reason to laugh.

It had not.

The dress had been a dress.

The girl had been a girl.

The unkindness belonged to the person who chose it.

I placed the frame beside the other photographs and straightened it.

Then I stepped away.

The image remained in view, not as a warning and not as a challenge.

It was simply one piece of my history.

I could look at it without feeling that I needed to defend myself.

I could remember being embarrassed without being embarrassed by the fact that I had been embarrassed.

I could admit that Brenda's behavior had affected me and still refuse to let it define me.

That was enough for now.

I made myself a cup of tea and sat near the window.

The white apron remained folded in the drawer where I had put it.

The notebook rested on the table.

The school photograph stood on the shelf.

Nothing had been destroyed.

Nothing needed to be hidden.

I had not changed the past.

I had changed the way I spoke to myself about it.

And for the first time in a long while, I felt no need to hurry toward the next lesson.

I could let the day be ordinary.

I could let the memory be part of my life without making it the whole of my life.

I could let the girl in the green dress stand in that photograph, exactly as she was.

She had nothing to apologize for.

Neither did I.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: I No Longer Needed Brenda Vance to
