I am not asking you to make this easy for me. I am asking you to stop keeping me in the dark.”

He nodded.

“All right.”

He led me toward the room where he kept some of his personal things.

I followed without speaking.

I noticed the ordinary details around us: the light over the hallway, the shoes near the wall, the faint smell of dinner still lingering in the house.

Those things seemed strangely important.

They reminded me that this was still our home.

Whatever I learned, I would have to live with it here.

Dererick opened a cupboard and took out the compact black bag.

My stomach tightened.

Seeing it in his hand brought back the bedroom at 2:17, the blue clock, the gloves, and the awful feeling that I was watching a stranger move through the place where I slept.

He set the bag on a nearby surface.

“This is the one you saw.”

“I know.”

“I should have told you about it.”

“Yes.”

He unzipped it.

I watched his hands.

Inside were several small items arranged together. I could not immediately understand what they meant, and I refused to pretend that seeing them gave me an explanation.

I looked at Dererick.

“What are these?”

He began to answer, then stopped himself.

I felt a flash of anger.

“Please don't do that again.”

“Do what?”

“Start explaining, then decide I can't have the answer.”

He nodded.

“I'm sorry.”

He began identifying the items one by one.

I listened carefully.

Some were familiar enough that I understood what he meant. Others required more explanation. I asked him where they had come from and why he had kept them together.

He answered what he could.

When he did not know how to answer, I asked him to say that plainly rather than hide uncertainty behind a vague response.

It was not a comfortable conversation.

There were moments when I wanted to interrupt him and tell him what I thought his actions meant.

I held back.

I had spent weeks building explanations from fragments.

I was not going to repeat that mistake now that he was finally speaking.

The bag itself did not tell me what I needed to know.

It was an object.

The things inside it were objects.

Their meaning depended on what had happened, why he had kept them, and what he had chosen not to tell me.

I needed the full explanation, not another collection of clues.

“Why the gloves?” I asked.

Dererick looked at them.

“I didn't want to handle those things with bare hands.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn't want to leave anything on them.”

I stared at him.

“Anything like what?”

He paused.

Then he explained what he had been concerned about and why he had chosen to handle the items privately.

I listened, but I did not allow his explanation to erase the way he had behaved.

Even if he had a reason to wear gloves, he had still moved through our bedroom in the middle of the night without telling me what he was doing.

Even if the bag held things he believed needed to be kept separate, he had still allowed me to discover the bag without context.

And even if his intentions had not been what I feared, he had left me to imagine the worst.

I told him so.

“I understand why you were frightened by what you saw,” he said.

“Then you should understand why I don't want to hear that the whole problem was my fear.”

He looked at me.

“I didn't mean that.”

“I know you may not have meant it that way. But you have to understand the difference between explaining your actions and explaining away their effect on me.”

He remained quiet.

I watched him take that in.

For a long time, I had thought the hardest part of this situation would be discovering what the bag contained.

I was beginning to see that the harder part was deciding what to do with the truth once I had it.

An explanation could make a strange action understandable.

It could not make the action disappear.

It could not give me back the nights I had spent awake, or undo the way I had begun to question my own judgment.

I looked into the bag again.

“Is there anything else you haven't told me?”

Dererick's face tightened.

I felt the old fear rise immediately.

I forced myself to wait.

He took a breath.

“There are other details I should explain.”

I nodded.

“Then explain them.”

He did.

He described what had led him to keep the items and why he had thought secrecy would make things easier.

I asked questions whenever his explanation became unclear.

At one point, I had to stop him and ask him to begin again from the part where he had first decided not to tell me.

He looked uncomfortable, but he did it.

I was not trying to punish him.

I was trying to understand what had actually happened.

When he finished, I sat down.

My hands were cold.

I looked at the bag on the surface between us.

For weeks, I had imagined that discovering its contents would settle everything.

Instead, I had found that an object could be explained while trust remained unsettled.

I looked at Dererick.

“I need to ask you something about the tea.”

He nodded.

“All right.”

“Did you understand why I stopped drinking it?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

He hesitated.

“Not at first.”

“Then when?”

“When you started refusing it consistently, I realized something had changed.”

I looked down at my hands.

“Did you ever wonder why?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you ask me directly?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I thought you would tell me when you were ready.”

I shook my head.

“That sounds considerate, but it isn't the same as being honest about what was happening between us.”

He did not argue.

I asked him again whether there was anything about the tea that I needed to know.

This time, he answered without pausing to choose a softer version of the truth.

I listened.

I asked him to clarify what he meant, and I made sure I understood the difference between what he knew and what he had assumed.

I was not going to let fear fill in the missing pieces.

When we had finished talking about the tea, I felt tired in a way that went beyond sleep.

I had wanted certainty.

What I had gained was information, some answers, and a clearer view of how much damage secrecy could do even when people told themselves they were acting for the right reasons.

I looked at the bag once more.

“I wish you had told me before I had to find out like that.”

“So do I,” he said.

I believed that he regretted the way things had happened.

I did not know yet whether regret would be enough.

I stood and stepped away from the cupboard.

“I'm glad you finally showed me.”

He nodded.

“But I need time.”

“I understand.”

I looked at him carefully.

“Don't ask me to be over this just because you've explained it.”

“I won't.”

I wanted to believe him.

This time, I did not force myself to decide immediately whether I could.

I simply accepted that he had made a promise, and that what happened next would show me whether he meant it.

We put the items away.

Dererick did not try to draw me into an embrace.

I was grateful for that.

I needed room to think without feeling that I had to comfort him for the pain his silence had caused.

When I returned to the living room, I sat by myself for several minutes.

I thought about the woman who had poured away her tea because she could not explain why she was afraid.

I did not think she had been foolish.

She had noticed something that troubled her.

She had tried to understand it with the little information she had.

She had made mistakes, but she had not been wrong to ask questions.

I wanted to remember that.

When Dererick came into the room, he stopped a few steps away.

“Do you want me to sit with you?”

I considered the question.

“Not yet.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

He left me alone.

For the first time in a long while, I did not interpret his leaving as proof of anything.

I let it mean only what it meant: I had asked for space, and he had given it to me.

That was not the same as trust returning.

It was, however, a beginning.

<a
