It was the only light left in the bedroom, and it barely reached the dresser across from us.

Still, I could make out his outline.

He stood with his back partly turned toward me, his shoulders bent as he adjusted something around his hands.

Then came another sound.

A zipper.

Slow. Careful. Almost practiced.

I wanted to open my eyes fully.

I wanted to sit up and ask him what he was doing.

Instead, I stayed exactly where I was.

My fingers lay beside my face, and I concentrated on keeping them loose. Even the smallest movement seemed dangerous.

I could hear my heartbeat in my ears.

Dererick reached for a small black bag resting near the dresser.

I had never seen it in our bedroom before.

It was compact enough to carry with one hand. He held it close to his side, as though whatever was inside mattered more than the bag itself.

He did not look toward me.

That frightened me more than if he had.

My husband had spent years noticing everything about me.

He noticed when I changed my shampoo. He knew when I was upset before I admitted it. He could tell from the way I closed a cupboard whether I had enjoyed my day.

Yet that night, he moved around our bedroom as if I were not there.

As if I were an object he had already accounted for.

I kept my eyes narrowed to a thin opening.

The clock changed nothing.

2:17.

I remembered the tea.

Of course I remembered the tea.

Three hours earlier, Dererick had brought me a mug of chamomile with honey, just as he had done on so many evenings during the previous month.

He had placed it beside my laptop.

Then he had bent down and kissed the top of my head.

It was a familiar gesture.

That was what made everything so difficult to understand.

Dererick had never been the kind of husband who forgot the little things.

When the windshield washer fluid ran low, he refilled it before I noticed. When I finished my favorite crackers, a new box appeared in the pantry. When I complained that my feet were cold, he somehow found the thick gray socks I had misplaced.

He remembered things I mentioned only once.

For years, I had considered that one of the reasons I was lucky to have him.

Lately, I had begun wondering why he seemed so determined to take care of me.

I had not wanted to ask myself that question.

It felt ungrateful.

There were people who wished their husbands paid attention to them. There were women who spent years asking for the smallest signs of affection.

And there I was, questioning a cup of tea.

Looking back, I can see how badly I wanted an ordinary explanation.

That evening, I had wrapped both hands around the mug and watched the steam curl upward.

Dererick stood nearby, studying my face.

He smiled.

“You're looking at that drink as if you expect trouble from it.”

I remember the way he said it.

Lightly.

Like a joke between two people who had nothing to hide.

I made myself smile back.

“I've just had a long day.”

“You've been saying that a lot lately.”

He placed his hand on my shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze.

Then he went upstairs to brush his teeth.

I remained at the table.

The mug sat beside my laptop, its handle turned toward me. The tea smelled of chamomile and honey, exactly as it should have.

Nothing looked unusual.

I lifted it again.

Then I put it down.

I cannot tell you the precise moment suspicion became stronger than embarrassment. I only remember looking toward the stairs and realizing that I did not want to drink what he had made.

I wanted to be wrong.

I wanted to finish the tea, wash the mug, and forget I had ever felt uneasy.

Instead, I carried it into the kitchen.

My hands shook as I tipped the liquid into the sink.

The teaspoon rattled against the side of the cup.

I froze and listened.

Nothing.

The bathroom faucet continued running upstairs.

I looked down at the tea as it disappeared into the drain. It left no obvious trace behind. There was no strange color, no unusual smell, nothing I could point to and say that it proved anything.

I rinsed the mug.

A faint amber mark remained along the inside, and I did not bother to remove every trace of it.

Then I carried the cup back to the table and set it where Dererick had left it.

I told myself I was being ridiculous.

I told myself a tired woman could turn an ordinary kindness into something frightening if she spent too much time alone with her thoughts.

I told myself many things.

None of them made me want another sip.

That night, I went upstairs and climbed into bed.

I turned onto my side.

I closed my eyes.

And I waited.

At first, I expected Dererick to return from the bathroom and climb in beside me as he always did.

I expected him to pull the covers into place, check his phone, and settle down for the night.

Instead, I heard him moving around downstairs.

A cupboard opened.

Something was placed on the counter.

Then the house went quiet.

I kept my breathing even.

I had no plan beyond pretending to sleep. I had not decided what I would do if he came into the bedroom with something that proved my fears were justified.

I had not even admitted to myself what those fears were.

Eventually, I heard his footsteps on the stairs.

The bedroom door opened.

He entered without turning on the light.

The mattress dipped as he sat down briefly, and I felt the movement through the bed.

He did not touch me.

He did not ask whether I was awake.

After a moment, he got up again.

That was when I heard the gloves.

A small stretch of material.

A soft pull.

Then the zipper.

Now, at 2:17, he stood near the dresser with the black bag in his hand.

I had never seen that bag before.

I had never seen those gloves before.

And I had never watched my husband move through our home with such deliberate care.

He shifted his weight and looked toward the bedroom door.

I followed the movement with my eyes, barely daring to blink.

He seemed to be listening.

For what, I could not tell.

Then he lowered his gaze to the bag.

His gloved fingers tightened around its handle.

I tried to remember the last time I had seen him behave strangely. The last time he had hidden something from me. The last time I had asked a question and received an answer that seemed perfectly reasonable until I thought about it afterward.

There had been moments.

Small ones.

Nothing I had considered important enough to bring up.

I had trusted him because he had given me so many reasons to trust him.

That was the truth I struggled with most.

A person did not have to be cruel every day to make you afraid of what he might do on one particular night.

Dererick moved toward the bedroom door.

I felt a wave of relief so sudden that I nearly let out a breath.

Maybe he was leaving.

Maybe the bag contained something ordinary, something connected to work or a task he had forgotten. Maybe he had put on the gloves because he did not want to get his hands dirty.

There were explanations.

I could still find them if I tried hard enough.

But he stopped before reaching the door.

For several seconds, he stood completely still.

Then he turned his head toward the bed.

I shut my eyes.

The darkness behind my eyelids seemed enormous.

I could hear the faint hum of the air conditioner and the soft movement of fabric as he shifted his arm.

He was looking at me.

I knew it without seeing him.

I forced my face to remain relaxed. I let my mouth fall slightly open, the way it sometimes did when I slept deeply.

My heart was pounding so hard that I wondered whether my body would betray me.

Then his footsteps resumed.

He left the bedroom.

I waited until I could no longer hear him in the hallway.

Even then, I did not move.

I had spent the previous hours wondering whether I was imagining things.

Now I knew there was something I did not understand.

I just did not know what it was.

And I was beginning to understand that the most dangerous part of my marriage might not be whatever Dererick was doing.

It might be how easily I had convinced myself not to look.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Little Things My Husband Remembered Began to Feel Different When I Realized How Much He Watched Me

I used to believe that if you knew someone long enough, you would eventually understand everything about them.
