19 – I Stopped Searching Daniel’s Message for an Explanation That Wasn’t There and Chose the One Truth I Could Tell Him

I had finally become tired of reading the message.

Not because it hurt less.

It still hurt.

But I understood there was nothing more to discover in it.

Daniel had told me what he wanted.

I had spent hours trying to understand everything he hadn't said.

And there was no way to do that from a screen.

I couldn't see his face.

I couldn't hear his voice.

I couldn't know whether he'd been uncomfortable.

I couldn't know whether Sarah had asked him to send it.

I couldn't know why her family wanted a smaller gathering.

All I could know was what Daniel had chosen to write.

That had to be enough for now.

I looked toward the window.

Rainwater moved down the glass.

The loose gutter tapped against the wall.

The sound was almost steady now.

I remembered waking to it before sunrise.

At the time, I'd been half asleep.

Then my phone had vibrated.

I saw Daniel's name.

I smiled.

I hadn't expected anything painful.

Why would I?

He was my son.

Even at sixty, after forty years of motherhood, I still felt pleased when he contacted me.

That simple happiness was one of the things I didn't want to lose.

I didn't want to become suspicious every time his name appeared on the screen.

I didn't want to wonder whether he was contacting me because he needed something or wanted to deliver another disappointment.

I wanted our relationship to feel ordinary again.

Comfortable.

Honest.

But I couldn't make that happen by pretending this message hadn't mattered.

That would only create another kind of distance.

I had learned that during the morning.

At first, I thought the best response would be no response.

I could stay quiet.

Let Daniel have the holiday he'd chosen.

Avoid making him uncomfortable.

Perhaps he would appreciate that.

Perhaps everyone would move on.

But I knew I wouldn't move on quite so easily.

I would remember the words.

I would remember how abruptly they arrived.

I would remember feeling as though I had been removed from the family gathering without anyone thinking I deserved an explanation.

And I would remember the house.

That was what frightened me.

Not losing the invitation.

Losing the warmth attached to a memory I had once cherished.

I didn't want the house to become something bitter.

I had bought it because I loved Daniel.

I had wanted him and Sarah to have security.

I had been glad when everything was finished.

I remembered the papers.

The signatures.

The strange mixture of pride and nervousness.

Three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

It had been a serious decision.

I hadn't made it lightly.

But I'd made it willingly.

That mattered.

I could not allow one painful Thanksgiving message to turn the gift into something I claimed to regret.

I didn't regret it.

I was disappointed in Daniel.

Those were separate truths.

I wished I had understood that sooner.

I had spent hours moving between them as though I needed to choose one.

Either I was a generous mother who should accept everything quietly.

Or I was a hurt mother who had the right to remind her son how much she'd given.

Neither description was complete.

I could be generous and hurt.

I could love Daniel and disagree with him.

I could respect his home and still wish he had made room for me.

Those things belonged together.

I thought about Sarah.

I knew she mattered to Daniel.

She was his wife.

Of course her family's wishes mattered to their household.

I had no desire to come between them.

I didn't want Daniel choosing between his mother and his wife.

That had never been the purpose of buying the house.

I wanted them to be happy together.

I wanted them to build their own life.

But I also wanted Daniel to recognize that his mother was still part of his family.

Not the center.

Not the person who made the rules.

Simply someone who belonged.

I had assumed that much was understood.

Perhaps I needed to say it.

Not as a demand.

As an explanation of why the message hurt.

I looked at the phone.

The reply box was empty.

I had considered so many possible answers that they had begun to sound alike.

Some were too angry.

Some were too apologetic.

Some tried so hard to avoid conflict that they barely said anything.

I wanted something different.

Something I could read later without feeling ashamed.

I didn't need to make Daniel feel guilty.

I didn't need to prove I was right.

I didn't need to accuse Sarah.

I needed to tell him I was hurt.

And I needed to leave room for him to explain.

That was all.

I thought about whether I should ask him to reconsider Thanksgiving.

Then I stopped.

I wasn't sure I wanted that.

Not in the way I'd wanted it before the message.

An invitation offered because Daniel felt pressured would not give me what I needed.

I would spend the gathering wondering whether he truly wanted me there.

I didn't want to sit at a table feeling as though my presence had been negotiated.

I wanted to know I was welcome.

Those were different things.

And perhaps Daniel couldn't give me that feeling simply by changing his plans.

Perhaps we needed a conversation before anything else could feel normal.

I couldn't decide the outcome in advance.

But I could decide that I wouldn't demand a place at his table.

I would let him make his own choice.

And I would make mine.

I thought about the two pear trees again.

They had become such a strong image in my mind that I could almost see them when I closed my eyes.

Two young trees.

A small backyard.

A house where Daniel and Sarah were beginning their future.

I had been happy to help provide that place.

I was still happy about it.

What saddened me was realizing how much of my own future I'd imagined inside theirs.

I had expected visits.

Conversations.

Shared holidays.

Ordinary family moments.

I hadn't considered that some of those things might not happen.

Not because I believed Daniel owed me.

Because I believed we were close.

The message had shaken that belief.

But perhaps it hadn't destroyed it.

I didn't know.

A single painful decision wasn't enough to tell me everything about my son's feelings.

I needed to be fair.

He had not explained himself fully.

I had not told him how I felt.

We hadn't had a conversation.

There was still room for understanding.

I wanted to leave that room open.

But I didn't want to keep the door open by pretending there was no problem.

That would be dishonest.

I had spent too many years believing calmness was always the same as peace.

Sometimes calmness meant people were being considerate.

Sometimes it meant nobody was speaking about what hurt.

I wanted the first kind.

Not the second.

I remembered Daniel hugging me after the purchase.

That memory remained precious.

I couldn't see myself ever forgetting it.

But I needed to stop using it as proof of how he would behave in every future situation.

He had been grateful that day.

I believed that.

Now he'd made a decision that hurt me.

I believed that too.

Neither truth erased the other.

I looked at the phone once more.

I was no longer trying to find words that would guarantee Daniel's approval.

I was trying to find words that were fair.

There was an important difference.

I could control whether I spoke respectfully.

I could control whether I blamed people without evidence.

I could control whether I used the house as leverage.

I could control whether I told the truth.

But I couldn't control Daniel's reaction.

If he was uncomfortable, that didn't automatically mean I'd done something wrong.

If he disagreed, that didn't make my feelings unreasonable.

And if he didn't understand immediately, I could still know I'd spoken honestly.

That was enough.

I thought about beginning simply.

I wanted him to know I'd received his message.

I wanted him to know I respected his right to decide who attended Thanksgiving.

But I also wanted him to understand that the way he excluded me had hurt.

Those were the essential things.

Nothing more.

I didn't need to describe every hour I'd spent thinking.

I didn't need to tell him how many times I'd picked up the phone.

I didn't need to mention the gutter.

Or the rain.

Or the memory of him lifting me after the house purchase.

Those details explained my feelings to me.

They didn't all belong in the message to him.

I could leave them out.

I could speak plainly.

For the first time that morning, the possibility of answering no longer felt like stepping into an argument.

It felt like doing something ordinary.

Telling my son the truth.

I knew it might not be easy.

But I didn't need it to be easy.

I needed it to be honest.

And I finally understood that I could not protect our relationship by hiding every feeling that might make Daniel uncomfortable.

I could protect my part of it by speaking with care.

The rest would belong to him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: I Could Not Make Daniel Want Me
