15 – The Thanksgiving Invitation Was No Longer the Only Thing That Troubled Me, Because I Had Begun to Fear Being Honest With My Own Son

I wasn't afraid Daniel would stop loving me because of one conversation.

At least, I didn't think I was.

But I was afraid of something.

I could feel it every time I considered replying.

A hesitation.

A tightening in my chest.

The urge to wait until I found words that couldn't possibly upset him.

I had been doing that for hours.

I told myself I was being careful.

Perhaps I was.

But I was beginning to wonder whether careful had become another word for frightened.

The thought made me uncomfortable.

I had never considered myself afraid of my son.

Daniel wasn't a child I had to appease.

He was a grown man.

Forty years old.

Married.

Living in a house I had helped him obtain.

I could disagree with him.

I could ask questions.

I could say I was hurt.

There was no reason those ordinary things should feel so difficult.

Yet they did.

I sat in the quiet bedroom with the phone beside me.

The rain had not stopped.

The gutter outside the window continued its uneven tapping.

I listened to it and tried to decide what I was really worried about.

An argument?

Possibly.

I had never enjoyed arguments.

Most people didn't.

But I had managed uncomfortable conversations before.

It couldn't be only that.

I thought about Daniel reading a message from me saying I was disappointed.

I imagined him sighing.

I imagined him deciding I was making Thanksgiving more complicated than it needed to be.

I imagined him thinking I was trying to control him.

And then I stopped.

None of those things had happened.

They were guesses.

I was responding to an imaginary version of Daniel instead of the message he'd actually sent.

That wasn't fair to him.

It wasn't fair to me either.

I had no reason to decide in advance that he wouldn't listen.

But his final instruction had made me cautious.

He had told me not to make things difficult.

That was a powerful sentence to send someone who already worried about causing trouble.

It made any response seem risky.

If I asked why, was that difficult?

If I said I was hurt, was that difficult?

If I wanted a conversation, was I refusing to accept his decision?

I didn't believe those things were the same.

But I worried he might.

That was what had kept me silent.

Not uncertainty about my feelings.

Uncertainty about whether he would allow me to express them without treating them as a problem.

I looked at the phone.

It was strange how such a small object could hold so much tension.

The screen was dark.

Daniel's words weren't visible.

Yet I knew them almost by heart.

I didn't need to read them again.

I needed to decide whether I was willing to speak honestly.

I thought about the way I'd handled disappointments when Daniel was younger.

I had often tried to keep things calm.

A child could be upset over something small and experience it as enormous.

I had learned to listen.

To give him time.

To avoid making every difficult moment worse.

Those habits had served us well.

But Daniel was no longer a child.

He didn't need me to protect him from every uncomfortable feeling.

If he'd hurt me, he could hear that.

It didn't have to become an accusation.

It didn't have to become a fight.

It could simply be part of a conversation between two adults.

I wondered why that idea felt so unfamiliar.

Perhaps because being Daniel's mother had always involved a degree of responsibility I couldn't completely put down.

Even now, I wanted to shield him from pain.

I didn't want him to feel ashamed.

I didn't want him to regret accepting the house.

I didn't want him to think I considered him ungrateful.

Those concerns were genuine.

But they had begun to crowd out something equally important.

My own need to be heard.

I had spent forty years loving Daniel.

Surely that relationship should be strong enough to hold a little disappointment.

If it wasn't, silence wouldn't make it stronger.

That thought stayed with me.

I had been treating peace as though it meant the absence of difficult conversations.

But sometimes silence only made a problem harder to understand.

I could avoid upsetting Daniel today.

I could say nothing.

I could stay away from Thanksgiving and pretend the decision hadn't hurt.

Perhaps everything would seem normal afterward.

But I would remember.

I knew I would.

I would remember waking to the rain.

Seeing his name.

Smiling.

Opening the message.

Feeling the sudden emptiness when I realized he didn't want me there.

I would remember the house.

The money.

The two pear trees.

The day he'd thanked me.

And I would remember that I hadn't told him what his message had done to me.

That last part troubled me.

If I remained silent, Daniel might never understand.

He might believe I'd accepted the situation without disappointment.

He might assume the message had been entirely reasonable.

Again, I couldn't know.

But I would be contributing to the misunderstanding by hiding the truth.

I didn't want to do that.

I had told myself for years that family relationships needed patience.

I still believed it.

But patience couldn't mean swallowing every feeling until there was nothing left to say.

There had to be room for honesty.

Even when it was inconvenient.

Especially then.

I thought about the house purchase.

Three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

A transaction that had required careful attention.

Documents.

Signatures.

A transfer.

Everything had been explicit.

There had been no uncertainty about what was being given.

The emotional part was different.

No document stated what I hoped the gift would mean.

No agreement described how Daniel and I would treat each other afterward.

I had assumed those things didn't need explanation.

Perhaps that had been naive.

But I didn't think every act of love needed conditions attached.

I still believed a gift could be freely given.

And I still believed the person receiving it could show consideration without being forced.

Those beliefs weren't unreasonable.

I had simply mistaken them for guarantees.

They weren't.

Daniel could disappoint me.

I could disappoint him.

We could misunderstand each other.

And if we wanted the relationship to remain honest, we needed to speak when those things happened.

I knew that.

The problem was finding the courage to do it.

I almost smiled at myself.

Courage.

Such a large word for sending a message to my son.

But it was the right word for how I felt.

I didn't need courage to write something angry.

Anger would have made that easy.

I could have typed the amount I'd spent.

I could have accused him of forgetting everything I'd done.

I could have blamed Sarah's family.

I could have sent a message sharp enough to make him feel hurt too.

That would have required almost no thought.

The difficult thing was speaking plainly.

Without punishment.

Without guilt.

Without pretending.

I wanted Daniel to know I was disappointed.

I wanted him to understand that his message had hurt.

And I wanted to leave room for him to explain.

That was all.

I wasn't trying to change who he was.

I wasn't trying to control his holiday.

I wasn't trying to make him choose between his mother and his wife's family.

I was trying to be honest with someone I loved.

I looked out at the rain.

The gutter rattled again.

I wondered how long I'd been avoiding that small repair.

Then I thought about how easy it was to postpone uncomfortable things.

You told yourself there was time.

You adjusted.

You learned to live with the noise.

Eventually, the problem became part of the background.

I didn't want that to happen with Daniel.

I didn't want to become accustomed to feeling excluded.

I didn't want him to become accustomed to speaking to me without consideration.

And I didn't want our relationship to depend on how much I was willing to ignore.

Those were not unreasonable hopes.

I was beginning to believe that.

I thought about Thanksgiving once more.

I could accept not attending.

I didn't like it.

But I could accept it.

The holiday would come whether I was at Daniel's house or not.

I wouldn't arrive uninvited.

I wouldn't demand a place.

That decision was settled.

What remained unsettled was whether I would tell him how much the message had hurt.

I knew the answer now.

I had to.

Not because I expected him to change his plans.

Because I didn't want to hide from him.

I had been his mother for forty years.

I knew how to love him.

I knew how to help him.

I knew how to make excuses for him.

Now I needed to learn how to disappoint him without feeling that I'd failed.

Perhaps he wouldn't be disappointed.

Perhaps he would understand.

I couldn't know until we spoke.

But his possible reaction couldn't be the only thing guiding me.

I picked up the phone.

The screen lit.

Daniel's name appeared above the conversation.

I didn't read the message again.

I already knew it.

Instead, I looked at the space where my reply would go.

I thought about the difference between being difficult and being honest.

Daniel had asked me not to make things difficult.

I could respect his wish not to argue.

But I couldn't promise that my feelings would be convenient.

And I shouldn't have to.

That was the decision I finally reached.

I would not attack him.

I would not threaten him.

I would not use the house as leverage.

But I would tell him the truth.

Even if the conversation became uncomfortable.

Even if he didn't immediately understand.

I owed our relationship that much.

And for the first time that morning, I recognized that I owed myself the same consideration.

<a
