folder.

“What else is in there?”

Melissa handed him two appointment cards from Dr. Greene.

One had a handwritten note on the back.

David’s writing.

Learn the difference between being needed and being loved.

Ethan stared at it.

“That’s the whole story.”

“What is?” I asked.

He tapped the card.

“Dad thought being useful made him lovable.”

He pointed toward himself.

“I thought keeping Mom okay made me lovable.”

Then he looked at Melissa.

“And you thought keeping me close proved I loved you.”

Melissa lowered her head.

“Yes.”

Three generations, I thought.

Different forms of the same confusion.

That evening, after Melissa left, Ethan opened his draft.

He deleted almost twenty pages.

“What are you doing?”

“I had the wrong story.”

“Again?”

“Yes.”

“What is it now?”

He stared at the blinking cursor.

“I thought it was about what happened after Dad died.”

“And now?”

“It started before that.”

“How far before?”

He looked toward the note I had written David years ago.

“Maybe before me.”

He began a new section.

Not about the court.

Not about the recording.

About a young father collapsing at work because he believed everyone he loved depended on him remaining strong.

Then he wrote about a mother frightened that grief would steal her child.

Then a boy who believed telling the truth could destroy his family.

The same emotional rule appearing in different lives:

If the people I love are hurting, I must change myself until they stop.

Ethan typed until midnight.

Before going upstairs, he paused beside me.

“There’s one person I need to talk to.”

I already knew.

“Dr. Greene.”

“Yes.”

“Are you going to call him?”

“I don’t know if he can talk to me.”

“He may not be able to.”

“I know.”

“What will you ask?”

Ethan considered.

“Not what Dad said in therapy.”

That relieved me.

“Then what?”

“Whether Dad ever figured out the difference.”

“Between?”

“Being needed and being loved.”

The next morning, Ethan called the number written in David’s notebook.

To his surprise, Dr. Samuel Greene was still practicing.

And when Ethan explained who he was, the therapist went silent for several seconds before saying a sentence that neither of us expected.

“I wondered if David’s son would ever find me.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: David’s Former Therapist Could Not Reveal His Secrets, but One
