18 – Going Back for What Was Mine

We arranged to go to the house the following afternoon.

My father suggested a time when Derek was likely to be at work, but he did not assume that would make everything safe.

We talked through the plan before deciding.

I would take my own car so I could leave whenever I wanted.

My father would come with me.

We would collect the things on my list first.

If Derek came home unexpectedly, we would stop and decide what to do rather than trying to finish everything.

I wrote the plan on the same sheet of paper as my belongings.

Seeing it in writing made the visit feel less like walking into a problem I could not control.

That evening, Derek sent another message.

I don't understand why your father needs to be involved in this.

I read it at the kitchen table.

My father was checking something on his laptop, and the room was quiet except for the tapping of his keyboard.

I could have answered that my father was involved because I had asked him to be.

I could have reminded Derek that he had no right to decide who supported me.

Instead, I let the message sit.

I was learning that not every accusation required a defense.

The next morning, I woke with a knot in my stomach.

I dressed carefully, choosing jeans, a sweater, and shoes I could walk comfortably in.

I put the folded list in my coat pocket.

My father checked that his phone was charged before we left.

He asked whether I wanted to drive separately or ride with him.

I chose my own car.

The choice was small, but it mattered to me that I could leave without needing anyone's permission.

The drive to my house took twenty minutes.

I knew every turn.

I passed the grocery store where Derek and I used to shop on Saturdays.

I passed the bakery where I had ordered the birthday cake ingredients.

When I reached our street, I slowed down without meaning to.

The house looked exactly as it had when I left.

The curtains were open.

The porch light was off.

A delivery box sat beside the front door.

Nothing outside showed what had happened inside.

I parked in the driveway and turned off the engine.

My father parked behind me.

He walked over and stood beside my car while I took a breath.

“We can leave whenever you want,” he said.

“I know.”

I got out.

The key felt cold in my hand.

For a second, I could not make myself put it into the lock.

I had opened that door thousands of times.

I had carried groceries through it, brought home flowers, and hurried inside when it rained.

Now I stood there wondering what kind of welcome waited on the other side.

I unlocked the door.

The house smelled faintly of coffee and the lemon cleaner I had used before my birthday.

My coat was still hanging on the hook near the entrance.

The birthday card my father had given me sat on the small table by the stairs.

I looked at it for a long moment.

The night I left, I had walked out with an overnight bag and almost nothing else.

I had not looked around to see what I was leaving behind.

Now every familiar object seemed to ask me a question.

Was I coming back?

Was I leaving?

Was this still my home?

I did not have answers for any of them.

I went upstairs to the bedroom.

My jewelry box was on the dresser.

My laptop sat on the desk beside a stack of work papers.

The small bottle of perfume I used every morning stood near the mirror.

I began with the practical things.

I put the laptop and its charger in my bag.

I collected the documents I needed for work.

I took the medication from the bathroom cabinet and checked that I had enough for the coming days.

Then I opened the dresser drawer where I kept my everyday clothes.

I folded several shirts and placed them in a second bag.

My father stayed downstairs.

He had offered to come up if I wanted him to, but I preferred to gather the things myself.

I needed to see that I could move through the house without asking Derek whether I was allowed to take my own belongings.

I was placing socks into the bag when I noticed my wedding ring on the dresser.

I had taken it off the night I arrived at my father's house.

I had forgotten to pack it.

The ring was lying beside a hair tie and a receipt from the pharmacy.

I picked it up.

It was heavier than I remembered.

I turned it between my fingers, looking at the small scratches along the band.

I could recall the day Derek had put it on my hand.

He had smiled at me in front of our families.

His hands had been warm.

I had believed that we would always be able to find our way back to that happiness.

I did not hate the memory.

That surprised me.

I could remember something good without using it to excuse something bad.

I placed the ring in the jewelry box.

I was not ready to decide whether I would wear it again.

I was not ready to decide what it meant.

I put the box in my bag and zipped it closed.

Downstairs, my father was standing in the living room.

He had not touched anything.

He had simply waited.

“Got what you need?” he asked.

“Most of it.”

“Do you want to look around once more?”

I walked through the kitchen.

The birthday cake was gone.

The serving plates had been washed and put away.

A small mark from a glass remained on the dining table, and one of the chairs was still slightly crooked.

I straightened it automatically.

Then I stopped and left it where it was.

The chair did not need to be perfect.

Neither did the room.

I opened the refrigerator and took out a container of food I had prepared before my birthday.

I could not remember why I had left it there.

I put it back on the shelf.

I had come to collect my belongings, not to restore the house to the way I thought it should look.

My father waited near the front door while I checked the kitchen counter.

My keys were there.

So was a small envelope containing a gift receipt.

I put both in my bag.

Then I heard a car slow outside.

I froze.

The sound passed, but my heart continued to pound.

My father looked at me.

“Do you want to leave?”

I nodded.

We carried the bags to the car.

I locked the front door behind me.

For a moment, I stood on the porch and looked at the house.

I felt grief, relief, shame, and longing all at once.

It was strange to leave a place that belonged to me and still feel as if I needed permission to go.

My father did not tell me how to feel.

He simply walked with me to my car.

I put the bags in the trunk and sat behind the wheel.

My hands shook as I started the engine.

I waited until my father had pulled out before leaving the driveway.

Halfway down the street, my phone rang.

Derek.

I did not answer.

A message appeared before I reached the next intersection.

I saw your car. Why didn't you tell me you were coming?

My stomach tightened.

I had told him I needed space.

I had not told him I would be at the house that afternoon.

I had gone at a time when he was expected to be away, with my father beside me, and I had left when I felt uncomfortable.

I had done what I had planned to do.

Still, I felt the old urge to apologize for inconveniencing him.

Another message arrived.

You could have waited for me.

I pulled into a safe parking space and stopped.

I wanted to tell him that I had not wanted to meet him alone.

I wanted to explain that collecting my own clothes should not require his presence.

I wanted him to understand why I had made the plan the way I had.

Instead, I put the phone down and waited until my breathing slowed.

My father called to check that I was all right.

“I am,” I told him.

“Do you want to come straight back?”

“Yes.”

We drove the rest of the way without talking much.

When I reached his house, I carried the bags inside.

The spare room looked smaller with my belongings in it.

I placed the laptop on the desk and hung my clothes in the wardrobe.

The jewelry box went into the bedside drawer.

I put the medication beside my toothbrush.

I did not unpack everything.

Some things could wait.

My father brought me a glass of water.

I sat on the bed and held it between both hands.

“I thought going back would make me feel worse,” I said.

“Did it?”

“Some of it did.”

He waited.

“But I also feel relieved that I have my things.”

“Then both feelings can be true.”

I nodded.

That evening, I answered one message from Derek.

I collected the things I needed. I'm safe, and I'm staying here for now. I am not ready to meet or talk in person. Please contact me by text if there's something practical we need to arrange.

I read it carefully before sending.

I did not add an apology.

I did not promise to come home.

I did not explain the entire afternoon.

Then I put my phone away and helped my father prepare dinner.

For the first time since leaving, I had clothes in a drawer, work supplies on a desk, and the things I needed for the next few days.

I had not returned to the life I knew.

I had made room for the possibility of a different one.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: What an Apology Could Not Fix

We arranged to go to the house the following afternoon.
