He drove an aging blue Honda, worked Saturdays at a hardware store, and had developed the alarming teenage belief that sleep was optional.

He divided his time between my house and Melissa’s more naturally now.

The court arrangement had formally changed two years earlier, after therapists and attorneys agreed the rigid structure was no longer necessary.

Nobody celebrated that order either.

By then we had finally learned that legal victories were poor substitutes for ordinary trust.

Melissa lived fifteen minutes away. Ethan spent two or three nights there most weeks, depending on school and work.

Sometimes she came to my house for dinner.

Sometimes I went to hers.

We were never going to become best friends.

That was all right.

Respect turned out to be more durable than forced affection.

The toolbox resurfaced because Ethan needed a socket wrench.

I was upstairs folding towels when I heard him call from the basement.

“Grandma?”

“What?”

“You should come down here.”

I disliked that tone.

It usually meant broken plumbing, blood, or an expensive mistake.

I found him sitting on the basement floor beside David’s old workbench.

The wooden toolbox was open.

“What happened?”

He held up a small black flash drive.

My first thought was the recording.

“You found it.”

“No.”

He pointed into the box.

“That one is mine.”

I looked.

The encrypted drive containing the courtroom recording was still tucked into the corner where he had left it.

The black drive in Ethan’s hand was different.

“Where did that come from?”

“Under the false bottom.”

“What false bottom?”

He removed the shallow wooden tray.

Beneath it was a thin panel I had never noticed.

David had modified the toolbox himself.

“That wasn’t there when your father was a teenager.”

“How do you know?”

“I bought this box.”

Ethan tilted the panel.

There was a narrow cavity underneath.

Inside lay the flash drive, three folded sheets of paper, and a small envelope with Ethan’s name written across the front.

My knees weakened.

David’s handwriting.

Even after six years, I knew every slant of it.

Ethan looked at me.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

He handed me the envelope.

I did not take it.

“It has your name.”

His thumb traced the writing.

“Do you think Mom knew?”

“I have no idea.”

He stared at the envelope.

“What if it’s nothing?”

“Then it’s nothing.”

“What if it isn’t?”

“That’s probably why your father put your name on it.”

Ethan sat at the workbench.

For nearly a minute he did nothing.

Then he opened the envelope.

The letter inside was short.

Much shorter than either of us expected.

Ethan read it silently first.

His face changed.

“What does it say?”

He handed it to me.

Ethan—

If you’re reading this, either I finally remembered to give you this box, or I didn’t get the chance.

There are things on the drive I made for you because sometimes saying something out loud is harder than writing it down or recording it.

Don’t watch everything in one night.

And don’t make the mistake of thinking you have to become me.

Love,

Dad

I had to sit down.

Ethan stared at the flash drive.

“He knew?”

“Knew what?”

“That he might die.”

David had been sick for months before his death, but he had concealed the seriousness of his condition from Ethan for as long as possible.

“He knew it was possible.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“He told me the doctors were trying something new.”

“They were.”

“But he knew.”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

I hated that question.

“Yes.”

He stood abruptly.

“You knew he could die and nobody told me?”

“We told you he was very sick.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“No.”

He paced across the basement.

“I was eleven.”

“I know.”

“So everybody decided I couldn’t handle the truth.”

“Your father decided he wanted to protect you.”

“That’s what everybody says when they lie.”

The words hit hard because I knew where they came from.

His childhood had made secrecy feel like betrayal.

“Ethan.”

“I’m not mad at you.”

“You look mad.”

“I’m mad at him.”

He pointed toward the drive.

“And he’s dead, so that’s convenient.”

I let the anger exist.

David did not need me to defend him from his own son.

After several minutes, Ethan returned to the workbench.

“What’s on it?”

“I don’t know.”

He plugged it into an old laptop.

There were fourteen video files.

Each had a date.

The first had been recorded seven months before David died.

The last, eleven days before.

Ethan clicked the first.

David appeared on the screen.

I covered my mouth.

Time does strange things to memory.

I remembered my son perfectly.

Yet seeing him alive was different.

He sat in his workshop wearing a gray T-shirt. He looked thinner than I remembered from that period, but his smile was intact.

“Okay,” recorded David said. “This is weird.”

Ethan froze.

His father laughed at himself.

“I’ve started this three times, and I keep sounding like a man recording instructions for a lawn mower.”

I heard Ethan make a sound that was half laugh, half breath.

David leaned toward the camera.

“If you’re watching this, kiddo, there’s a decent chance I’m not around to explain why I made these.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“I’m sorry about that.”

The screen went still for a second as David collected himself.

“I don’t know how much time I have. Doctors are careful with promises. Your mother is hopeful. Grandma is pretending not to be scared. I’m doing both.”

I closed my eyes briefly.

Even dying, David had seen us clearly.

“I want to tell you some things while I can still choose the words.”

Ethan leaned closer to the screen.

“The first one is easy.”

David smiled.

“You are not responsible for keeping the adults you love happy.”

I felt the room change.

Ethan stopped breathing for a second.

David continued.

“That sounds obvious, but it isn’t. Especially if you’re anything like me.”

He talked about his own childhood.

About trying to protect me after his father died.

My husband, Robert, had suffered a sudden heart attack when David was sixteen.

David had believed he needed to become the man of the house overnight.

I had never known how heavily he carried that.

“I watched Mom cry once,” David said on the recording, “and after that I spent about a year thinking sadness was something I was supposed to prevent.”

Tears blurred my vision.

“So, Ethan, if something happens to me, your mom will hurt.”

Recorded David swallowed.

“My mom will hurt.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“You will hurt.”

Ethan’s chin trembled.

“None of you has to fix the others.”

I turned toward him.

He could not look away from the screen.

“If your mother cries, love her. But don’t turn yourself into medicine.”

Melissa’s face flashed through my mind.

The courtroom.

The recording.

Ethan saying he feared she would never forgive him.

David had somehow named the exact trap before any of us fell into it.

Ethan paused the video.

The basement became silent.

“He knew.”

“Not what would happen.”

“But he knew Mom.”

“He knew grief.”

Ethan stood.

“I need to show her.”

“Maybe not tonight.”

He turned toward me.

“Why?”

“Because your father told you not to watch everything in one night.”

“I’m not talking about everything.”

“You just discovered fourteen messages from him after six years.”

“So?”

“So your heart may be moving faster than your judgment.”

He hated when I said things like that.

I could see it.

But after a moment, he nodded.

We watched no more that evening.

Ethan took the laptop upstairs but left the drive in my desk drawer overnight.

The next morning, he called Melissa.

She arrived around noon.

When Ethan told her what we had found, she looked genuinely shocked.

“David made videos?”

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

Her hand went to her mouth.

“Where?”

“He hid them in the toolbox.”

She sat.

For a moment, she looked hurt.

Then she caught herself.

“These are for you.”

Ethan nodded.

“But I want you to see the first one.”

I left the room before they watched.

An hour later, Melissa found me in the garden.

Her eyes were swollen.

“He said I’d hurt.”

“Yes.”

“He knew.”

“Not exactly.”

She stared across the yard.

“He told Ethan not to become medicine.”

I said nothing.

Melissa wiped her face.

“I did exactly what David was afraid of.”

“Maybe.”

She looked at me sharply.

“That’s not cruel enough.”

“I’m not interested in punishing you.”

She laughed weakly.

“You never were.”

“No.”

“I almost wish you had been.”

“Why?”

“Because then I could have hated you more easily.”

That was one of the strangest compliments I ever received.

Over the next two months, Ethan watched the videos slowly.

One each week.

Sometimes alone.

Sometimes with Melissa.

Twice with me.

David talked about ordinary things.

How to change a tire.

How to apologize without adding “but.”

Why people should learn to cook at least five decent meals.

How to leave a bad party without making a scene.

Which mistakes from his own youth Ethan should not repeat.

There were also harder recordings.

One about marriage.

One about grief.

One about anger.

And one simply labeled When You Think I Left You.

Ethan did not watch that one until his eighteenth birthday.

That afternoon, Melissa and I sat beside him.

David appeared thinner in this video.

His cheekbones were sharper.

His breathing sounded heavier.

“I’m guessing this one hurts,” he began.

Ethan’s eyes immediately filled.

“I hate that.”

David looked down.

“If I had a choice, I’d stay long enough to embarrass you at your wedding, criticize how you mow the lawn, and become unbearable about whatever my future grandchildren call me.”

Melissa began crying.

David smiled faintly.

“But if I didn’t get that choice, I need you to understand something.”

He looked directly at the camera.

“Leaving because your body failed is not the same as choosing to leave somebody.”

Ethan covered his mouth.

“You were worth staying for.”

The room broke open.

Melissa reached for Ethan’s hand.

He took it.

David continued.

“You always will be.”

When the video ended, Ethan stayed seated.

Nobody spoke.

Then he stood and went downstairs.

I found him later in the basement.

The toolbox was open again.

He held the encrypted drive containing the courtroom recording in one hand and David’s drive in the other.

“Funny,” he said.

“What?”

“One recording proved Mom hurt me.”

He looked at his father’s drive.

“And one proved Dad loved me.”

I sat beside him.

“Both can be true.”

“I know.”

He turned the old encrypted drive over between his fingers.

Then he said something I would remember years later.

“Maybe proof isn’t supposed to tell you who somebody is forever.”

“What do you think it’s for?”

“To tell you what happened.”

He looked toward the stairs where Melissa was waiting.

“What happens next is different.”

That day he did not delete the recording.

But for the first time, he no longer seemed afraid of what forgetting it might mean.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: At
