I whispered.

My father nodded slowly.

He didn't look satisfied to have been right.

He looked sad.

That was worse in some ways.

I had wanted him to find a simple explanation, something that would make the bruise less serious and the evening less frightening.

Instead, he was listening to his daughter admit that she was afraid in her own home.

He glanced toward the kitchen.

"Have you got a bag packed?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"All right."

He didn't tell me to rush upstairs.

He didn't start gathering my things without asking.

He waited while I tried to understand the question.

"Why?"

"Because I want you to have the choice to leave if you need to."

I stared at him.

For three years, I had thought about leaving in vague, frightened ways.

I had imagined walking out during an argument.

I had imagined staying with a friend.

I had imagined waking up one morning and discovering that I was finally brave enough to change everything.

But every time I considered it seriously, the practical questions crowded in.

Where would I go?

What would I take?

What would Derek tell people?

What if he apologized?

What if I missed him?

What if I left and couldn't make my life work?

Those questions had kept me in place so many times that I had begun to think of them as reasons I couldn't leave.

My father wasn't promising to solve every problem.

He was reminding me that I could make a choice.

I looked at the brown gift bag on the coffee table.

It had been waiting there since he arrived.

I had almost forgotten about it.

"Your present is still in the living room," I said.

My father glanced at it.

"We can open it later."

I nodded.

The ordinary words made something inside me ache.

A birthday present.

A cake.

A father who wanted to celebrate with his daughter.

Those things should not have felt like luxuries.

But sitting there, with the dinner cooling and the bruise exposed, I realized how much of my life I had spent treating ordinary peace as something I needed to earn.

My father stood and came around the table.

He stopped beside my chair.

"Would you like to come with me for tonight?"

I looked up at him.

I wanted to say yes immediately.

I wanted to stand, take my coat, and leave the house before Derek came back.

But fear still held me in place.

"What if he says I'm abandoning him?"

My father was quiet for a moment.

"Then he'll say that."

I looked at him.

He continued in the same calm voice.

"You can care about someone and still recognize that you aren't safe with them."

I lowered my head.

I had spent so long trying to prove that I cared about Derek that I had forgotten caring about myself was allowed too.

I wasn't ready to decide what would happen to my marriage.

I wasn't ready to explain everything to anyone else.

I wasn't even ready to look at the bruise in the mirror without feeling ashamed.

But I could admit that I didn't want to spend another night pretending I wasn't afraid.

"I think I need to leave for tonight," I said.

My father nodded.

"Then we'll take what you need."

The decision was small.

It didn't end the marriage.

It didn't erase the things that had happened.

It didn't tell me what the next morning would bring.

But it was the first decision I had made in a long time that wasn't based on guessing how Derek would react.

I stood up slowly.

My chair moved backward, scraping softly against the floor.

I glanced toward the kitchen one last time.

The strawberries were still on the cutting board.

The knife lay beside them, exactly where I had left it before answering the door.

I had begun the evening trying to hide a bruise so that my birthday dinner could proceed as planned.

Now I was leaving the table because I had finally admitted that the plan wasn't worth protecting.

My father picked up his jacket.

I went to retrieve my coat.

Neither of us knew what Derek would say when he returned.

For once, I understood that I didn't need to settle that question before taking the next step.

I only needed to stop pretending that fear was the same thing as peace.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Went Upstairs to Pack a Small Bag, Realizing I Had Spent Years Preparing for Derek’s Reactions Instead of My Own Future

Derek stood again.
