It's her birthday."

My father didn't look away from me.

"I'm asking Emily."

I stared at the flowers beside the cake.

Their stems were gathered in a small glass vase. One of the petals had fallen onto the tablecloth.

It was such an ordinary detail.

I focused on it because I needed something simple to look at.

"Yes," I said.

My voice shook.

"I want you to stay."

My father nodded.

"Then I'll stay."

Derek sat down again.

He picked up his fork, though he didn't eat.

For a few seconds, I wondered whether the conversation was over.

Perhaps we would sit quietly until dinner ended.

Perhaps my father would wait until Derek left the room before asking anything else.

Perhaps the evening could still become manageable.

Then Derek spoke.

"I don't understand why you're making this into something bigger than it is."

I looked at him.

For the first time, I wasn't sure whether I was more afraid of his anger or of the possibility that I might finally stop believing his explanations.

"It's my face," I said.

He frowned.

"What?"

"It's my face. I know what happened to it."

The words sounded stronger than I felt.

Derek leaned back.

My father remained quiet.

I realized that I had been waiting for someone to tell me I was allowed to say that.

No one had.

I had simply needed to hear myself say it.

Derek rubbed his forehead.

"You're upset. I get that."

He said it in the same tone he used when he wanted to end an argument without admitting anything.

"I'm not asking you to agree with everything I say. I'm asking you not to turn this into a scene."

I almost laughed again.

The scene had been in my head for months.

The fear had been there long before my father arrived.

The bruise had been there before I put on the makeup.

Nothing about the evening had created the problem.

It had only made the problem visible.

My father placed both hands on the table.

"We're not going to pretend she didn't say what she said."

Derek looked at him.

"Fine."

The word was sharp.

He pushed his plate away.

I flinched at the movement, then felt ashamed for flinching.

My father saw it.

This time, he didn't look at Derek.

He looked at me.

I understood something then that I had been avoiding for a long time.

My body had learned to react before I could decide whether I was afraid.

I could tell myself that nothing was going to happen.

I could tell myself that Derek was calm now.

I could tell myself that the dinner would end and everyone would go to bed.

But I couldn't make my body believe those things simply by repeating them.

My father reached for his napkin and set it beside his plate.

He wasn't rushing me.

He wasn't asking me to be brave.

He was just there.

And for that moment, it was enough to let me sit at my own birthday table without having to defend the lie I had told when he first arrived.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Had Spent Three Years Explaining Away His Anger, Until My Father Asked One Quiet Question I Couldn’t Answer for Him

Derek stood up.
