13 – I Thought Sarah’s Letter Had Answered Every Question About Our Divorce, Until I Understood What It Still Could Not Tell Me

I had read Sarah's letter enough times to remember almost every word.

Still, I wanted to read it again.

I sat outside her hospital room with the envelope on my knees.

The paper was beginning to show the marks of my fingers.

I had spent so long waiting for an explanation.

Now that I had one, I didn't know what to do with it.

Three years.

That was how long I had believed Sarah stopped loving me.

Three years of waking up without her.

Three years of trying to understand why twenty years of marriage hadn't been enough.

And all that time, she had been sick.

I looked toward the hospital room.

Jessica had told me Sarah's first major surgical procedure there had taken place almost four years earlier.

That meant Sarah had already been dealing with her illness before our divorce.

I kept thinking about that.

Not because I doubted Jessica.

Because I couldn't make those years fit with the marriage I remembered.

I thought about the porch swing.

Sarah sitting beside me.

Her voice when she told me she wanted to end our marriage.

I remembered asking her what had changed.

She had spoken about my future.

About the life I deserved.

About how I shouldn't spend my remaining years taking care of her problems.

At the time, I had been hurt by those words.

I thought she wanted me to accept that our marriage had become something she no longer valued.

Now I knew she had been hiding something.

Something much larger than an ordinary disagreement.

I rubbed my face.

I didn't want to turn every memory into evidence that I should have known.

That wasn't fair.

Sarah had kept the truth from me deliberately.

I couldn't have guessed a diagnosis from a few difficult conversations.

But I still wondered whether she had wanted to tell me.

Whether she had come close.

Whether some of the pauses I remembered had been moments when she was trying to find the courage.

I stopped myself.

Those were questions.

Not memories.

I had to keep the difference clear.

I looked down at the envelope.

Sarah's handwriting was still unmistakable.

David.

I had seen my name written by her thousands of times.

Birthday cards.

Small reminders.

Ordinary notes during our marriage.

But this was different.

She had written it during the same week she asked for our divorce.

She had known what she was doing.

She had known what I would believe.

And she had written that she still loved me.

I didn't understand why she couldn't give me the letter then.

Jessica had explained that Sarah wanted the hospital to keep it for me.

If I came looking for her, the staff were supposed to hand it over.

That was what she had instructed.

I wondered how many times she had thought about changing that instruction.

Maybe none.

Maybe every time she returned for treatment.

I didn't know.

I looked toward the room again.

For years, I had wanted Sarah to tell me the truth.

Now I was close enough to ask her.

And I was afraid of what that conversation might cost her.

She wasn't simply my former wife anymore.

She was a patient.

She had undergone surgery and chemotherapy.

I didn't know how she was feeling.

I didn't know what she could manage.

Those things mattered.

More than my questions.

I folded the envelope carefully.

I thought about the wedding ring.

That small piece of metal had been sitting in the center of my pillow when I woke up two weeks earlier.

Sarah was gone.

I had looked at the ring and felt rejected all over again.

I thought she wanted me to understand that the night we spent together hadn't changed anything.

It seemed obvious then.

Almost cruelly obvious.

Now I wasn't sure.

The letter had changed what I knew about the divorce.

But it didn't explain the ring.

I couldn't pretend it did.

I wanted to ask Sarah why she left it.

I wanted to know whether she had been trying to say goodbye.

Whether she had been frightened.

Whether she regretted the night we spent together.

I wanted to know all of it.

But I couldn't answer any of it myself.

I had already made that mistake once.

I had filled three years of silence with the belief that Sarah no longer cared.

That belief had shaped everything.

Even the way I remembered our marriage.

I wasn't going to make another story out of an unanswered question.

I looked at Jessica, who was nearby.

"Can I ask you something?"

She turned toward me.

"Yes."

"Did Sarah ever explain why she kept the letter instead of sending it?"

Jessica considered the question.

"She wanted it available if you came looking for her."

I nodded.

"I know."

I looked at the envelope.

"I just keep wondering why she couldn't tell me herself."

Jessica didn't pretend to know.

"I think Sarah would have to answer that."

She was right.

I knew she was right.

But I had been hoping for something more.

An explanation that would make the whole thing easier to understand.

Something that would remove the fear and confusion from Sarah's decision.

There wasn't one.

Not yet.

I leaned back in the chair.

I thought about how often I had wanted the divorce to make sense.

I had imagined that if I found the reason, everything afterward would feel different.

Now I had the reason.

And everything did feel different.

Just not easier.

I wasn't wondering whether Sarah had loved me.

I knew she had.

I was wondering why she had believed loving me meant leaving.

That question hurt in a new way.

Sarah had known I would take care of her.

Jessica had told me that.

The counselors had heard Sarah say it.

She believed I would give too much of myself.

She believed I would let her illness consume my life.

And she decided the only way to protect me was to end our marriage.

I wanted to tell her she was wrong.

I still did.

But I also wanted to understand why she had been so certain.

I looked at the date on the envelope.

Three years earlier.

I tried to imagine how frightened she had been when she wrote it.

I couldn't know the details.

But the words themselves told me she had been struggling.

She knew her decision was painful.

She knew it might appear cruel.

She had made it anyway.

I couldn't call that indifference.

Not anymore.

I touched the fold in the paper.

Part of me wanted to forgive her immediately.

I wanted to say that everything made sense now.

That no harm remained.

But that would have been another lie.

The divorce had hurt me.

Her silence had hurt me.

The ring had hurt me.

And learning about the illness hurt in a way I couldn't yet describe.

I could love Sarah without pretending those things hadn't happened.

I had to believe that.

Otherwise, any conversation we had would begin with another form of silence.

I didn't want that.

Not again.

I looked toward the room.

"She knew I would stay," I said quietly.

Jessica heard me.

"That's what she told the counselors."

I shook my head.

"Then why didn't she let me?"

Jessica remained silent.

There was nothing more she could add.

The answer belonged to Sarah.

I lowered my eyes.

For twenty years, I had believed being married meant facing difficult things together.

I didn't believe marriage guaranteed happiness.

I didn't believe love could prevent illness.

But I believed it meant neither person had to carry every frightening thing alone.

Sarah had seen it differently.

At least when she became sick.

She had decided that allowing me to help would take something away from me.

I wished she could have understood what losing her had taken instead.

Three years.

A marriage.

A future we never got to discuss honestly.

I swallowed.

I couldn't change any of that.

The only thing I could change was what I did with the truth now.

I looked down at the envelope.

It was no longer proof that Sarah loved me.

I didn't need proof anymore.

It was proof that she had wanted me to understand something she couldn't say aloud.

That mattered.

I carefully put the letter back inside.

Then I looked toward her room.

I still wanted to see Sarah.

I still wanted to hear her explain the ring.

But I knew what I needed to do first.

I needed to stop treating the conversation as something I had to win.

There would be no victory in making Sarah admit she had been wrong.

No satisfaction in telling her how badly the divorce had hurt me if she couldn't bear to hear it.

I wanted honesty.

From both of us.

I wanted to ask what she needed.

I wanted to tell her how I felt.

And I wanted to give her time to answer.

The letter had answered one question.

Sarah had never stopped loving me.

The rest would have to come from her.

I was finally willing to accept that.

Click
