9 – I Sat Outside Sarah’s Hospital Room With Three Years of Questions, Until I Realized How Much I Had Already Learned

I had never been good at waiting for bad news.

I could sit through an argument.

I could listen to something I didn't want to hear.

But waiting without knowing what came next had always been difficult for me.

That afternoon, I sat outside Sarah's hospital room with an envelope in my hands.

I had already read the letter inside.

I knew what it said.

I knew Sarah had been receiving cancer treatment before our divorce.

I knew she had undergone surgery almost four years earlier.

And I knew she had never stopped loving me.

Those facts should have given me some peace.

Instead, they made me realize how little I understood.

I looked toward the door.

I wanted Sarah to come out and tell me everything herself.

I wanted to hear the familiar sound of her voice.

I wanted to ask why she had believed losing her would be easier than helping her through an illness.

But I also knew she was a patient.

She wasn't someone I could demand answers from whenever I wanted.

That mattered.

I placed the envelope across my knees.

My name faced upward.

David.

Just five letters.

Yet seeing them written by Sarah had brought back more memories than I could handle.

I remembered the porch swing.

The divorce papers.

The night we spent together after our marriage had ended.

And the wedding ring she left behind.

I had spent so much time trying to understand that ring.

For two weeks, I had treated it as a message.

A cruel one.

I thought Sarah had been telling me to stop hoping.

Now I wasn't sure.

I turned the envelope over.

There was nothing on the back.

I knew because I had checked several times already.

It was foolish.

I wasn't going to discover a second explanation hidden behind the paper.

But I kept looking anyway.

Jessica had stepped away after our conversation.

Before she left, she told me that seeing Sarah would depend on what was appropriate for her care.

I understood.

I had told her I could wait.

And I meant it.

I just hadn't realized how difficult sitting still would be.

I rubbed my hands together.

They had finally stopped trembling.

My thoughts hadn't.

I kept remembering the way Jessica looked at me when she discovered I didn't know about the chemotherapy.

She hadn't expected my confusion.

She assumed a husband of twenty years would know something that important.

So would I.

That was part of what made the truth difficult to accept.

I had lived with Sarah.

Shared ordinary days with her.

Listened when she was worried.

Or believed I had listened.

Yet an entire part of her life had been hidden from me.

Not a small secret.

Not something she had forgotten to mention.

A serious illness.

Surgery.

Treatment.

I pressed my palms against my knees.

I didn't want to blame myself for failing to know what Sarah deliberately concealed.

That would have been unfair.

But knowing that didn't stop me from wondering what I had missed.

I thought about our last conversations before the divorce.

Sarah had been firm.

That was the word I kept coming back to.

Firm.

Not necessarily happy.

Not necessarily cold.

Just determined.

She had decided our marriage should end.

And she refused to explain why in a way that made sense to me.

I had interpreted that determination as indifference.

Looking back, that judgment embarrassed me.

Not because I should have guessed the truth.

I couldn't have.

But because I had mistaken her refusal to speak for proof that she didn't care.

Now there was a letter saying the opposite.

I looked down at the envelope.

She had written it during the same week she asked for the divorce.

She knew what she was hiding.

She knew what I would believe.

And she wrote that she still loved me.

Then she sealed the letter.

I wondered what it had felt like to do that.

I wondered whether she had cried while writing it.

Jessica had told me Sarah cried when my name came up during later hospital admissions.

But I couldn't know what had happened when she first wrote the letter.

I refused to invent an answer.

I had spent enough time imagining Sarah's thoughts.

That was how I ended up believing she had stopped loving me.

I looked toward the room again.

I wanted her to explain.

Not because an explanation would erase the hurt.

It wouldn't.

But because I wanted to stop guessing.

I was tired of building an entire story around what Sarah hadn't said.

I was tired of remembering the divorce through my own anger.

I wanted to know what those days had really been like for her.

And I wanted her to know what they had been like for me.

That was the part I hadn't thought about enough.

Sarah knew why she left.

I didn't.

She had carried the truth through every year we were apart.

I had carried questions.

Sometimes I felt guilty for still loving her.

Sometimes I felt foolish for missing someone who seemed determined to live without me.

Sometimes I was angry enough to promise myself I would never speak to her again.

Those feelings hadn't been constant.

They came and went.

But they never settled into anything that felt like peace.

I thought the problem was that I hadn't accepted the divorce.

Now I understood that I hadn't accepted the explanation.

Because there hadn't been an honest one.

I leaned forward.

I wanted to tell Sarah that.

I wanted her to understand that silence wasn't painless just because no one was arguing.

It had hurt me every day in small ways.

And I had no idea what her illness had cost her during those same years.

That difference mattered.

I couldn't compare our suffering.

I didn't want to.

We had both lost something.

And neither of us had understood what the other was carrying.

I heard footsteps farther down the hall.

I looked up automatically.

They weren't Sarah's.

Of course they weren't.

I lowered my eyes again.

I was acting like a man waiting for someone to return from an ordinary appointment.

But nothing about this was ordinary.

Sarah was in a hospital.

Her condition was serious enough that Jessica had spoken to me carefully.

And the letter suggested Sarah had been facing uncertainty for years.

I wanted to be useful.

That feeling was immediate.

I wanted to ask whether she needed anything.

Whether there was something I could bring.

Whether someone had been helping her.

But those questions belonged to Sarah.

I couldn't assume she wanted me to take over.

That was another thing I had to understand.

She had left because she feared I would give up everything for her.

If I walked into her room acting as though I had the right to make every decision, I might confirm the very fear that drove her away.

I sat with that thought.

It was uncomfortable.

I had spent the whole afternoon saying Sarah should have allowed me to choose.

Now I had to remember she still had choices too.

Her illness didn't take that away.

Neither did our history.

I could offer to stay.

I could tell her I loved her.

I could ask what she needed.

But I couldn't force her to accept any of it.

That realization hurt.

I had waited three years for the truth.

Part of me wanted the truth to change everything immediately.

I wanted Sarah to tell me she had made a terrible mistake.

I wanted us to agree that the divorce should never have happened.

But learning why she left didn't mean the consequences disappeared.

We were still divorced.

Three years had passed.

She was still ill.

And I didn't know what she wanted from me now.

I touched the envelope.

Then I remembered the ring.

It had been left on my pillow after our night together.

I knew Sarah had chosen where to place it.

I knew she was gone when I woke.

Everything beyond that was interpretation.

I had treated my interpretation as the truth.

I wouldn't do that again.

If I had the chance, I would ask her.

And I would listen.

Even if her answer wasn't what I hoped.

That was what I owed her.

And what I owed myself.

I sat back.

The chair felt hard beneath me.

My eyes were tired from crying.

I wanted to close them.

But every time I did, I pictured the porch swing.

Sarah looking straight ahead.

Her voice telling me I should have a life that wasn't spent caring for her problems.

I remembered how angry that made me.

She had spoken as if I didn't understand my own marriage.

I had wanted to tell her that loving her wasn't a duty I was desperate to escape.

It was a choice I had made willingly.

I still believed that.

But I also began to understand something I hadn't considered before.

Sarah had been frightened enough to stop believing she deserved that choice.

She looked at herself as a future burden.

She believed my loyalty would trap me.

And she made a decision that hurt both of us.

I couldn't excuse that decision.

Not completely.

But I could understand the fear behind it.

I looked toward the door.

For the first time that afternoon, I stopped rehearsing an argument.

I didn't need to prove to Sarah that she had been wrong before asking how she was.

I could tell her later.

If she wanted to hear it.

If she was able.

I folded the envelope more carefully.

Then I held it between both hands.

Jessica had told me Sarah never doubted my love.

That meant something.

I had spent years doubting hers.

And now I knew I had been wrong.

I didn't feel relieved.

Not yet.

But I felt less certain of the bitter story I had told myself.

That was a beginning.

I looked at the hospital door again.

I still wanted answers.

I still wanted to know about the wedding ring.

I still wanted to understand why Sarah had kept the letter instead of giving it to me.

But I no longer needed all those answers before I could decide how I felt.

I loved her.

I was hurt.

I wanted to see her.

Those things were true at the same time.

And for the first time since our divorce, I was willing to let them remain true without forcing one to cancel out the others.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Sarah Had Believed
