8 – Before I Faced Sarah Again, I Had to Decide Whether I Wanted an Explanation for the Divorce or a Chance to Understand Her

I had come to the hospital looking for Sarah.

By the time I understood what she had hidden, I was no longer sure what I wanted from her.

An explanation.

An apology.

The truth about the ring.

All of those things mattered.

But sitting outside her room, I realized they weren't the first things I needed.

I needed to know how she was.

That thought should have been simple.

Instead, it made my throat tighten.

For three years, I had believed Sarah was living a life she had chosen without me.

Now I knew she had been facing treatment for an illness that began before our divorce.

I still didn't know everything.

I didn't know what her current condition meant.

I didn't know how much she could tell me.

I didn't even know whether she was ready to see me.

Those uncertainties frightened me.

I looked toward Jessica.

She had been patient.

She had answered what she could.

She had not tried to fill every silence with reassurance.

I was grateful for that.

I didn't want another comfortable lie.

I wanted whatever truth was available.

I held the envelope flat across my palms.

Sarah had written it during the week our marriage ended.

The paper had waited for me for three years.

Now I was sitting only a short distance from the woman who wrote it.

The thought felt strange.

For so long, Sarah had been someone I remembered.

A voice in my head.

A face I tried not to picture too often.

A person I missed even when I was angry with her.

But she was here.

Not in a memory.

Not in a photograph.

Here.

I looked at the door again.

I wondered what I would feel when I saw her.

I had imagined that moment many times.

Before I knew about the illness, I thought I might feel embarrassed.

I thought I might be angry.

I worried she would look at me with the same certainty she had shown during our divorce.

Now I was frightened for an entirely different reason.

I didn't know what treatment had done to her.

I didn't know how she felt.

I didn't know whether she had been hoping I would find her or fearing that I would.

I couldn't answer any of those questions from the hallway.

I looked down.

My thumb touched the place where she had written my name.

I remembered the day our divorce became final.

I had believed the paperwork meant there was nothing left to say.

Sarah had been so firm about ending the marriage that I eventually stopped asking questions.

I had mistaken her refusal to explain for certainty.

Now I knew there had been another reason.

She was hiding an illness.

She had already undergone serious treatment.

And she believed the kindest thing she could do was remove herself from my future.

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to tell her how wrong I thought she had been.

But I also wanted to understand how frightened she must have felt to reach that decision.

I thought about what I knew of her.

Sarah could be stubborn.

She could make up her mind and hold to a decision long after I had stopped understanding it.

I had seen that side of her throughout our marriage.

Sometimes it was frustrating.

Sometimes it was one of the things I admired.

She didn't give up easily.

But I had never imagined that same determination could turn against us.

I had never imagined she would use it to push me away while still loving me.

I thought about the letter.

She had admitted that what she did might have been cruel.

She hadn't tried to pretend the divorce had been painless.

She knew she had hurt me.

But she believed that pain would be smaller than what might happen if I stayed.

I shook my head.

I couldn't agree.

I had lived through the pain she chose for me.

She had no way of knowing it would be easier.

Neither did I.

Maybe staying through her treatment would have changed my life.

Of course it would have.

Serious illness changes the lives of everyone close to it.

But change wasn't the same as ruin.

And caring for Sarah wasn't something I would have considered a punishment.

I would have wanted to know what she needed.

I would have wanted to be part of the decisions we faced.

Even when there were no easy answers.

Especially then.

I realized I had been thinking of marriage differently from Sarah.

At least when it came to her illness.

I believed love meant allowing someone to stand beside you.

She believed love meant releasing me before she became too difficult to care for.

Neither of us had said those beliefs aloud when we still had the chance.

That silence had become our divorce.

I opened the envelope again.

I wasn't looking for new information.

There wasn't any.

I simply needed to see the words.

Sarah still loved me.

She had written it clearly.

I touched the edge of the paper.

It was ordinary paper.

Thin enough to bend.

Easy enough to tear.

Yet it had carried a truth that changed three years of my life.

I thought about the wedding ring again.

The last thing Sarah had left me after our night together.

I remembered staring at it and feeling foolish for hoping.

I had believed it meant she wanted to close the door for good.

Now I understood how dangerous it was to treat silence as an explanation.

The ring might have meant something I hadn't considered.

Or it might have meant exactly what I feared.

Only Sarah could tell me.

I put the letter away.

I wasn't going to ask Jessica to guess.

I wasn't going to keep punishing myself with possibilities.

I had spent enough time doing that.

I looked toward the room.

"Can I tell you something?" I asked Jessica.

She turned toward me.

"Of course."

"I spent three years thinking she had stopped loving me."

Jessica listened.

"I thought the divorce was the answer."

I looked at the envelope.

"Every time I wondered what happened, I came back to the same thing."

I swallowed.

"She left. So I assumed she didn't want me."

Jessica didn't interrupt.

"Now I know she was sick."

I looked up.

"And I know she still loved me."

My voice became unsteady.

"But I don't know how to make those things fit with what happened."

Jessica spoke gently.

"You don't have to understand every part of it at once."

I nodded.

That was true.

I didn't want it to be true.

I wanted the whole explanation immediately.

I wanted the three years of confusion to end in a single conversation.

But Sarah's illness was real.

Her treatment was real.

The divorce was real.

And none of those things could be undone by learning one secret.

I looked down at my hands.

"What if she's afraid I'll be angry?"

Jessica didn't guess.

I appreciated that.

"I am angry," I admitted.

Then I shook my head.

"But not because she's sick."

I looked toward the door again.

"I'm angry she thought she had to face it without telling me."

I stopped.

That was the truth.

I wasn't angry that Sarah needed help.

I was angry that she had decided needing help made her someone I should be protected from.

I wanted to tell her the difference.

I wanted her to hear it from me.

The man whose future she had tried to save.

The man who had spent three years missing her.

I remembered the porch swing.

The way she had talked about my life as though she already knew what would make it better.

I remembered wanting her to stop speaking for me.

I hadn't found the right words then.

Maybe I hadn't understood why they mattered so much.

Now I did.

If Sarah could hear me, I wanted to say something simple.

She wasn't a problem I needed to escape.

She wasn't a mistake in my life.

She was the woman I had married.

The woman I still loved.

And her illness didn't change that.

I looked at Jessica.

"I don't want to make things harder for her."

She nodded.

"That's understandable."

"I have questions."

"Of course."

"A lot of questions."

"I know."

I looked down at the envelope.

"But she doesn't have to answer all of them today."

Saying that made something settle inside me.

I had spent years wanting an explanation more than anything.

Now I understood that explanations could wait when someone was suffering.

Sarah had been carrying this alone for so long.

I didn't want my need for answers to become another burden.

I wanted to listen.

I wanted to be present.

I wanted her to know that learning the truth hadn't made me turn away.

I folded the envelope carefully.

For the first time, I was ready to put it aside.

Not because it had stopped mattering.

Because the woman who wrote it mattered more.

I thought about what I might say when we finally spoke.

I didn't want a speech.

I didn't want to rehearse something that sounded perfect.

I wanted to be honest.

I would tell her I knew about the treatment.

I would tell her I had read the letter.

And I would tell her I wished she had trusted me enough to share the truth.

Then I would listen.

If she could explain the ring, I would hear her.

If she wanted to talk about the divorce, I would listen to that too.

And if all she could manage was a few words, I wouldn't ask for more.

I had made too many assumptions about Sarah.

I wasn't going to make another one about what she needed now.

I looked at the envelope one final time.

For three years, I had believed it was my job to stop loving her.

I had failed at that.

Maybe I hadn't needed to succeed.

I didn't know what would happen when we spoke.

I couldn't promise her recovery.

I couldn't undo her treatment.

I couldn't restore the years we had lost.

But there was one thing I could offer.

The truth about how I felt.

The same truth Sarah had hidden in that hospital file.

I still loved her.

I wanted her to know it.

I looked toward Jessica.

"I'm ready to see her whenever it's possible."

She acknowledged what I said.

I stayed in my chair, holding the letter.

The anger hadn't disappeared.

The hurt was still there.

But I no longer needed Sarah to prove that our marriage had mattered.

Her letter had answered that question.

What remained was harder.

We would have to face what her fear had done to us.

And if Sarah was able, I wanted us to face it together instead of making another decision in silence.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Sat Outside Sarah’s Hospital Room With Three Years of Questions, Until I Realized How Much I Had Already Learned

I had come to the hospital looking for Sarah.
