7 – I Wanted to Blame Sarah for Every Lost Year, but Her Letter Forced Me to Face the Fear Behind Our Divorce

Anger came back while I was sitting in that hallway.

I hadn't expected it.

I thought learning that Sarah still loved me would make the anger disappear.

It didn't.

It changed it.

For three years, I had been angry because I believed she didn't want me.

Now I was angry because she had wanted me and left anyway.

That was harder to admit.

I looked at the envelope in my hands.

It contained the explanation I had begged for during our divorce.

Sarah had known the truth.

She had written it down.

And she had allowed me to live without it.

I loved her.

I still loved her.

But loving someone doesn't mean every choice they make stops hurting.

I needed to admit that.

I had spent the first minutes after reading the letter feeling sorry for what she had endured.

Then I began thinking about what had been taken from us.

Three years.

Not three weeks.

Not a few difficult months.

Three years in which I could have been beside her.

I couldn't get those years back.

No apology could return them.

No explanation could make them happen differently.

I rubbed my palms together.

I wanted to stand up and walk into Sarah's room.

I wanted to ask her why she hadn't trusted me.

But I also knew I couldn't arrive carrying every grievance from the divorce and expect her to answer them immediately.

She was in the hospital.

Her condition mattered.

I needed to remember that.

Still, the anger was real.

There was no use pretending otherwise.

I thought about the week Sarah asked for the divorce.

She had seemed determined.

I remembered trying to understand what she wanted.

I had asked whether there was something I could change.

Whether we could work through whatever had happened.

She hadn't given me the truth.

Instead, she had spoken about what was best for me.

I had hated that answer.

It sounded as if she had already stopped listening.

Now I knew she had been making a decision about my future while hiding the most important information from me.

I wished I could go back to that porch.

Not to win an argument.

Not to convince her that love solved everything.

I wanted to sit beside her and ask one question.

"Are you afraid?"

I wondered what she might have said.

I couldn't know.

Maybe she would have told me.

Maybe she would have continued hiding it.

The woman I had married could be stubborn.

Jessica had reminded me of that without intending to.

Sarah had refused to accept the idea that I could choose to care for her.

The counseling staff had tried to explain it.

She had remained convinced she was protecting me.

I looked toward Jessica.

"Can I ask something else?"

She turned toward me.

"Yes."

"Did she ever tell the counselors she thought I would resent caring for her?"

Jessica paused.

"She was concerned you would give up too much."

"But did she think I'd resent her?"

"I can't say that she told them that."

I nodded.

It mattered to me that Jessica didn't invent an answer.

Sarah had feared what the illness would cost me.

That didn't necessarily mean she believed I would blame her.

Those were different things.

I didn't want to confuse them.

I had confused enough already.

I looked down at the envelope.

Sarah had described her decision as an attempt to spare me.

I understood what she meant.

I still thought she had been wrong.

If she had told me the truth, I could have decided how to help.

Maybe there would have been difficult choices.

Maybe I would have had to give things up.

Maybe some days would have been exhausting.

But those possibilities belonged to our marriage.

They belonged to both of us.

Sarah had treated them as burdens I couldn't be allowed to carry.

I had wanted to carry them.

I would have chosen that.

I thought about what people sometimes say when someone they love becomes seriously ill.

They talk about strength.

About staying positive.

About making the best of things.

I didn't want to say any of that to Sarah.

I didn't know what her treatment had been like.

I didn't know what she was facing now.

I didn't know whether she felt hopeful or frightened or simply tired.

I wanted to know.

I wanted to hear her tell me.

I didn't need her to pretend she was strong.

I didn't need her to make me comfortable.

I needed the truth.

That was what we had lost.

Not just our marriage.

The chance to face something painful without hiding it from each other.

I looked at the date on the envelope again.

Sarah had written the letter during the week of our divorce.

It meant that even then, while she was asking me to leave, part of her had wanted me to know.

She had put the words on paper.

She had sealed them.

Then she had kept them.

I tried to imagine her handing the envelope to the hospital staff.

Explaining that it was for her former husband.

Asking that it be given to me if I ever came looking for her.

I didn't know exactly how that conversation had happened.

Jessica hadn't described it in detail.

But the instruction itself was clear.

Sarah had prepared for the possibility that I would discover the truth.

She hadn't wanted me to remain mistaken forever.

Yet she hadn't been willing to tell me herself.

That contradiction hurt.

I wondered how many times she had considered sending the letter.

I couldn't answer that either.

I was beginning to understand how many questions would have to remain unanswered until Sarah could speak.

I leaned forward.

My elbows rested on my knees.

I looked at the floor.

There had been a time when I believed the divorce proved I had failed as a husband.

Sarah hadn't told me what was wrong.

I assumed it must have been something about me.

Something I hadn't noticed.

Something I couldn't fix.

I had carried that belief for years.

Now it seemed almost unfair to the man I had been.

I hadn't known about the illness.

I hadn't known about the treatment.

I hadn't known Sarah was frightened of what my loyalty would cost.

How could I have answered fears she refused to share?

I couldn't.

That realization didn't make me feel better immediately.

It made me sad.

I had spent years blaming myself for an explanation that hadn't been true.

And Sarah had spent those same years carrying a secret she believed would protect me.

Neither of us had been free of what happened.

We had simply suffered in different ways.

I rubbed my eyes.

My face felt tired.

I thought about the letter's last lines.

Sarah had written that there was more she needed me to understand.

I wondered whether she had been trying to leave room for a conversation she couldn't yet face.

Maybe that was why she had kept the letter.

Maybe she had hoped one day she could explain everything.

I stopped myself again.

I wasn't going to invent a reason.

The temptation was strong.

I wanted every detail to make sense.

I wanted a complete story with a beginning, a middle, and an explanation that left nothing unresolved.

But real life hadn't given us that.

It had given us a divorce.

A night together.

A ring left on my pillow.

A phone call from a hospital.

And a letter that changed everything I thought I knew.

I couldn't make the remaining pieces fit by guessing.

I needed Sarah.

I looked at Jessica.

"I keep thinking about what she said."

"About wanting to protect you?"

"Yes."

I swallowed.

"She thought she was doing something kind."

Jessica nodded.

"That's how she described it."

"But she hurt me."

"I know."

"And she was hurting too."

"Yes."

I looked away.

That was the terrible part.

There wasn't a simple villain in the story.

Sarah had made a decision that hurt us both.

She had done it out of love and fear.

And I was left trying to understand how something meant to protect me had caused so much pain.

I wanted to be angry enough to make the decision simple.

I couldn't.

I knew Sarah too well.

Or at least I knew enough of her to recognize the woman in that letter.

The stubbornness.

The certainty that she had to handle difficult things herself.

The way she could convince herself that protecting someone meant carrying pain without telling them.

Those things hadn't appeared because of cancer.

They were parts of her I already knew.

The illness had given them a terrible purpose.

I lowered my head.

I remembered loving that stubbornness once.

Sometimes it made me laugh.

Sometimes it drove me mad.

Now it had cost us years.

I looked toward the room again.

I didn't want our first conversation to become a trial.

I didn't want to stand over her and demand that she justify every choice.

But I also didn't want to pretend her choices hadn't mattered.

I wanted us to speak honestly.

For once.

If Sarah could talk, I wanted her to tell me what she had been afraid of.

I wanted to tell her what the divorce had done to me.

Not to make her feel guilty.

To stop the silence.

I thought about the ring.

I would ask about that too.

But not before asking how she was.

I had waited three years for explanations.

I could wait a little longer if she needed me to.

I folded the envelope and rested it in my lap.

My anger hadn't vanished.

Neither had my love.

I was beginning to accept that they could exist together.

And I made myself a promise.

If Sarah was able to speak with me, I would tell her the truth.

I was hurt.

I was frightened.

I had never stopped loving her.

And I would not make her guess which of those feelings was real.

<a
