4 – Standing Outside Sarah’s Hospital Room With Her Letter in My Hand, I Realized the Goodbye I Remembered Had Hidden Her Greatest Fear

I wanted to see Sarah.

I was also afraid of what I might find when I walked through the door.

Those feelings sat beside each other.

Neither one went away.

Jessica stood near me while I looked at the envelope.

I had imagined finding Sarah again more times than I could count.

None of those imagined meetings looked like this.

I had pictured an ordinary conversation.

Awkward, perhaps.

Maybe painful.

I would ask her whether she was happy.

She might ask the same of me.

We would be two people who had once shared a marriage and now lived separate lives.

That was what I thought our divorce had made us.

But Sarah was in a hospital room.

She had been receiving treatment for an illness I hadn't known about.

And I was holding a letter written when we were still husband and wife.

I couldn't pretend we were simply two people who had grown apart.

I looked at the date on the envelope again.

That week.

I had remembered that week for three years.

Sarah had told me our marriage needed to end.

I had asked why.

Her answers had been about my future.

About the kind of life she thought I should have.

About how I shouldn't have to spend my years trying to put things right for her.

I had hated those words.

I had thought she was making excuses.

Looking back, I could hear how frightened she might have been.

Not frightened that I would stop loving her.

Frightened that I would keep loving her, no matter what happened.

I sat with that thought.

It didn't erase the damage.

It didn't make the divorce fair.

But it changed what I understood about her decision.

I had heard rejection.

Sarah had been trying to say goodbye before I knew why she was leaving.

I thought about the porch swing.

I remembered sitting beside her and trying to find a question she would answer.

She kept returning to what she believed I deserved.

At the time, that sounded like a way to avoid telling me the truth.

Now I knew it was exactly that.

She had concealed the truth on purpose.

She had wanted the divorce to look like the end of her feelings for me.

I closed my eyes.

For years, I had wondered whether I should have fought harder.

Whether I should have said something different on that porch.

Whether one more conversation might have changed her mind.

Those questions were impossible to answer.

I couldn't know what would have happened if she had told me.

I couldn't know whether I would have persuaded her to stay.

But I knew what I would have said.

We would face it together.

Not because I was especially brave.

Not because I had some perfect understanding of sickness.

I would have been frightened too.

I would have made mistakes.

There would have been days when I wouldn't know what to do.

But I would have wanted the chance to try.

Sarah hadn't given me that chance.

I looked at Jessica.

"Did she ever explain why she couldn't tell me directly?"

Jessica's expression softened.

"She believed you would refuse to leave her."

I nodded slowly.

"She was right."

"She knew that."

I looked at the door.

That was the part I couldn't get past.

Sarah had known I would stay.

The woman who knew me better than almost anyone had used that knowledge to keep me away.

"Did she think I would resent her?"

Jessica paused.

"She was worried about what caring for her would mean for you."

I lowered my eyes.

"I wouldn't have resented her for being sick."

"I believe you."

"Did she believe that?"

Jessica didn't pretend to know every thought Sarah had carried.

She only repeated what the counselors had told her.

Sarah had been convinced I would put my own life aside.

She had believed that separating from me was the only way to prevent it.

I held the envelope between both hands.

It was already beginning to bend where my fingers pressed too hard.

I loosened my grip.

I didn't want to ruin it.

There was something almost unbearable about how ordinary the paper looked.

It had sat in a hospital file for three years.

While Sarah came back for treatment.

While I lived with an explanation that wasn't true.

While both of us remained caught in the same decision.

I thought about all the times I had told myself to stop thinking about her.

The times I had tried to be angry enough to make missing her easier.

I never managed it for long.

Even after the divorce, Sarah was still the person I thought of whenever something reminded me of our life together.

That hadn't made us married again.

It hadn't changed the papers we signed.

But it meant the love I had for her hadn't disappeared simply because our marriage was legally over.

And now I knew hers hadn't disappeared either.

I unfolded the letter one last time.

I read the opening.

Sarah wanted me to know that her love had continued through our separation.

I read the middle.

She had been frightened that staying married would force me into a life organized around her illness.

I read the end.

She wanted to explain more if she ever managed to face me.

That final admission stayed with me.

Sarah had not written as someone who had every answer.

She had written as someone afraid she might never find the courage to say them.

For the first time since arriving at the hospital, I stopped trying to decide whether her choice had been right or wrong.

I already knew it had hurt us.

I knew I disagreed with it.

I knew I wished it had never happened.

But Sarah was nearby.

And there were things that mattered more urgently than deciding who had been right three years ago.

I looked at Jessica.

"She thought I'd sacrifice everything for her."

"Yes."

"And you tried to tell her she didn't have to protect me that way."

"The counseling staff tried to help her see that you deserved a choice."

I nodded.

I was grateful someone had said it.

Even if Sarah hadn't been able to accept it.

"Did she ever change her mind?"

Jessica glanced toward the room.

"I think that's something Sarah would need to tell you."

I appreciated that answer.

It would have been easy for Jessica to guess.

To offer me comfort by pretending she knew what Sarah wanted now.

But too much had already been decided without me hearing the truth.

I didn't need another person speaking for Sarah.

I needed Sarah.

I placed the letter inside its envelope.

Then I held it against my chest.

I felt foolish doing it.

But I couldn't put it away.

For three years, I had wanted some proof that our marriage had meant as much to her as it had meant to me.

Now I had that proof.

And I wished I had never needed it.

My face was wet.

I wiped it with the back of my hand.

Jessica gave me a moment.

I thought about what Sarah had said to the counselors.

She loved me.

She believed I would give everything for her.

And she believed that was why she had to let me go.

I could hear her stubbornness in it.

I could hear the woman who had always believed she needed to carry the hardest things herself.

There was love in what she had done.

There was fear.

And there was a terrible mistake.

I was no longer willing to pretend those things couldn't exist together.

I turned toward the room.

My hands were still shaking.

I didn't know what I would say first.

Perhaps I would tell her I had read the letter.

Perhaps I would ask how she was feeling.

Perhaps I would simply say her name.

But I had made one decision.

I wasn't going to stand outside that room judging the woman who had been too frightened to let me help her.

I wanted to speak to Sarah.

Not to the wife I remembered from before our divorce.

Not to the woman I had imagined had stopped loving me.

To Sarah as she was now.

The person who had been sick.

The person who had been afraid.

The person who had tried to protect me by breaking both our hearts.

I looked once more at the envelope.

Three years earlier, I had listened to Sarah tell me I should have a life without her.

I had believed she was asking me to stop loving her.

Now I understood that she had been trying to make the decision for both of us.

I couldn't change what had happened.

I couldn't give us back the years we had lost.

But I could stop letting her fear speak for me.

I lowered the envelope.

"Jessica," I said, "I'd like to go in."

This time, I knew why.

I wasn't there to ask Sarah why she had stopped loving me.

I was there because she hadn't.

And I hadn't either.
